The primary aims of this study were to examine acquired genetic and epigenetic changes that occur in individuals with increasing age and to determine how these changes are influenced by genetic/environmental factors. Presented is a study on the chemotaxis reaction process and its relation with flow topology. The effect of coherent structures in turbulent flows is characterized by studying nutrient uptake and the advantage that is received from motile bacteria over other non-motile bacteria. Variability is found to be dependent on the initial location of scalar impurity and can be tied to Lagrangian coherent structures through recent advances in the identification of finite-time transport barriers. Advantage is relatively small for initial nutrient found within high stretching regions of the flow, and nutrient within elliptic structures provide the greatest advantage for motile species. How the flow field and the relevant flow topology lead to such a relation is analyzed.

The purpose of this study was to identify components of schools with successful science fair programs. Ideally schools interested in starting or improving their science fair programs could find a way to emulate some of the identified components. Successful was defined by having received recognition on some level at the International Science and Engineering Fair at least nine out of the last ten years. Twelve schools were identified as meeting this definition and five agreed to participate in the study. The schools represented diverse geographic areas as well as types of schools. Included in the study was a private school, two public schools and two public magnet schools. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, observations and document analysis. The climate of the school and the climate of the community were key features identified as helping to foster successful science fair programs. Unique features were identified as being present at most of the schools. These included embedding science research in the curriculum, requiring participation in science research for all students, flexible scheduling and offering elective science research classes. As the nation is increasingly focused on preparing students to enter STEM fields it seems that including science research in the science curriculum and emulating some of these unique components of successful science fair schools would be worth pursuing.

Medication errors remain a pervasive issue in healthcare. Medication error rates were increasing at the project site so an evidence-based solution was sought. The purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental quality improvement project was to determine if the implementation of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality''s (AHRQ) Nurse Bedside Shift Report Implementation Handbook would impact medication errors when compared to current practice among adult medical-surgical patients in an acute care hospital in rural Arkansas over four weeks. The theoretical foundation for the project utilized Peplau''s theory of interpersonal relationships and Kurt Lewin''s change model. The total sample size was 63, n = 29 in the comparative group and n = 34 in the implementation group. Data was obtained from the electronic medical record. A chi-squared test was used to analyze the data which indicated no statistically significant difference in reducing medication errors X2 (1, N = 63) = 2.42, p = 0.120. Despite the lack of statistical significance in reducing rates of medication errors, there was a clinical significance in reducing medication errors from 6.9% in the comparative group to 0% in the implementation group. Therefore, the implementation of the AHRQ''s Nurse Bedside Shift Report Implementation Handbook could aide in reducing medication errors in this population and setting. Recommendations include sustaining the project and data reanalyzed over six months to determine if the small sample size and short project timeline impacted achieving both statistical and clinical significance.
