61 for 1

release date: May 16, 2024
61 for 1
This definitive and expertly researched work chronicles the careers and life stories of 61 Worcestershire cricketers who played just a single game of Championship cricket for the county. The breadth and depth of material not only provides the career details of each player, which you would expect to see in such a publication, it reaches way beyond that. It includes at least one photograph of each player, and in several instances, details of births, deaths, schools, universities attended and chosen careers; have been included or corrected based on new information which has come to light. Coupled to that, it provides a fascinating insight into the lives of players and dovetails as a social history of the last 120 years. Due to this research, and because of the thorough work undertaken by the author, the identity of two players has been changed completely. It has; therefore, necessitated the re-writing of existing and hitherto definitive, established cricket records. While many of the players may not be household names, the book celebrates their remarkable lives and careers away from the cricket field, because each has a unique story to tell. Included are great Test cricketers, stalwarts of league cricket and those who excelled in their own professions or served their community and country with dignity. Whether at other sports, within education, business and commerce or during times of conflict - the latter tinged with sadness that two of the players paid the ultimate sacrifice - they all helped to forge a unique place in Worcestershire''s cricketing history.

Don't Make Me Do Something We'll Both Regret

release date: Apr 05, 2023
Don't Make Me Do Something We'll Both Regret
The stories in Don''t Make Me Do Something We''ll Both Regret are linked by their exploration of queer evil. The mystery of desire and sting of rejection drive a child to violence. Boys enter the forest, naive to what lurks within. A pack of pop stars-turned-lovers strike a terrible bargain to preserve their youth. Its characters are gnostics and mystics, ogres and queens whose defiance of the normative both liberates and confines. Innovative Prose ... from “Tim Jones-Yelvington is a Pretty Little Liar” My lovelies, I haven’t forgotten your secrets. Everything each of you told me in confidence. You said, Promise you’ll keep this to yourself. You said, Promise you’ll never tell a soul. You said, If anyone finds out, my life is over! I said, I’ll take it to the grave. Once, I came upon our frienemy in the marketplace. I said, I know what you’ve been up to! Don’t pretend your hemline’s clean! And she begged me, Keep your voice down! Don’t make me do something we’ll both regret. This is the new new me. Black feathered collar, black feathered cuffs, gold-threaded jacket, my shoulder plumage spills. I am a peacock. My chin is cocked. I am a libertine. I am a dandy. I am an emu, ready to stretch my neck. To sharpen my beak.

Mentors and Tormentors

release date: Dec 15, 2022
Mentors and Tormentors
Don''t be fooled. At first glance, he is just another middle-class fourteen-year-old. But on closer inspection, Wendall is so much more. He''s naive, sheltered, and insecure. Fortunately, he discovers a cure for his youthful shortcomings. He cannot control his curiosity. No matter how embarrassing, Wendall must know why people think, feel, say, and do sometimes-crazy things. During a span of four inquisitive years, his view of the world is transformed by a colorful cast of small-town characters. Some are mentors; others are tormentors. However, each is a specialist who thoroughly comprehends a specific facet of human nature: happiness, manipulation, and saying no, to list only a few. But Wendall isn''t just a passive student. He gets his hands dirty when his father transplants the family to a rundown farm. Our nosey hero then battles a sadistic psychopath, gets cheated by a con man, and talks a best friend back from a botched suicide attempt. Mentors and Tormentors is not another predictable, coming-of-age story. It is an instruction manual detailing how to handle yourself and other people. Wendall''s adventures add some fun and entertainment, which balance and reinforce the seriousness of the lessons. Think of this book as a collection of modern fables with each chapter having a specific, applicable message. But unlike Aesop''s fables, these truths don''t stand alone. They coalesce and reveal the secret to enjoying life with complete peace of mind. Mentors and Tormentors is Tim Jones''s first literary work. The lessons and characters are loosely based on his own experiences and those of thousands of emergency room patients. Dr. Jones''s thirty years of experiencing their humanity have made him uniquely qualified to write this book. His objective is to make readers laugh and learn. Laugh at Wendall''s missteps and learn his lessons the easy way. To learn more visit www.mentorsandtormentors.com

Strike a Prose

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Strike a Prose
Fiction. LGBTQIA Studies. Who, or what, is TJY? In this neon-lit chronicle of the rise and fall of literature''s first pop star, the diva''s trauma memoir collides with the twisted coming-of-age narrative of his adolescent fanboy, ornamented by the gilded prose poems that constitute the diva''s song. The result is a queer exploitation, rather than obliteration, of whatever remains of the distinction between high theory and lowbrow culture, conjuring a space where Lady Gaga meets Valley of the Dolls meets Dennis Cooper meets Deleuze, set to a soundtrack by LaToya Jackson, and where camp''s gestural pathos is tugged joyfully into the digital age. "It''s totally time for TJY--a pop star who is also a literary theorist."--Kathleen Rooney "In much the same way that literally millions of people claim they were at Woodstock, or that tens of thousands will tell you they saw the last Sex Pistols show at Winterland, people will one day tell such untruths about their presence at the reading where Tim Jones-Yelvington debuted his LIT DIVA EXTRAORDINAIRE persona. And I am telling you right now: I was there, and now I am Tim Jones-Yelvingtoning down the Sequined Way. You should join me. Better late than never."--Martin Seay "In STRIKE A POSE, the prismatic voice/voices/personas/identities of TJY simultaneously reveal and occlude, self-praise and self-deprecate, are joyful and bitchy and vulnerable and demanding. It''s like taking a glittery walk in consciousness/memory/fantasy, and it''s so good."--Vanessa Angélica Villarreal "STRIKE A POSE smartly, hilariously reimagines the kunstlerroman as a (lit) celebrity memoir. The result is preposterous, provocative, and affirming!"--M. Milks

I Am So Sick of White Guys (Kindle Version)

release date: Nov 18, 2017
I Am So Sick of White Guys (Kindle Version)
I am So Sick of White Guys: The Coloring Books Experience combines the long and revered American tradition of political satire with the latest popular craze, ''adult coloring books.'' If you are sick of news reports of yet another white guy abusing his power and taking advantage of your government, your financial system, your society and your culture, to pad his own wallet, then I am So Sick of White Guys may provide an amusing outlet for your frustrations. (Time to break out your crayon - you''ll only need one color!) Jim Corbett and Tim Jones collaborated with caricature artist, Steve Hartley to create a delightful collection of beautifully crafted images that skewer some sacred cows (and a fair number of pigs as well) that have grabbed more than their fair share of the pie over the years while convincing the world that the only opinion that really matters is the opinion of a white guy with money or power. Each image is accompanied by witty, sarcastic and sometimes even snarky comments that just might be the elixir you need to help you cope with what is happening to the greatest democracy the world has ever known. (Remember when our elections were decided by an insane thing called the ''Electoral College, '' instead of an even more insane thing called Russia?) I am So Sick of White Guys will look great on top of that pile of magazines accumulating on your coffee table you''re never going to get around to reading and will be a provocative conversation starter as guests peruse the depictions of some of your favorite prime-time foils. It has been suggested (by the authors) that if enough people buy I am So Sick of White Guys, more people will be energized to vote in America, which could lead to a world in which the opinions and contributions of ALL people were valued equally and perhaps - just perhaps - a world in which true progress could be made toward life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. So, in a way, buying a copy of this book just might change the world. Not a bad return on such a small investment. The authors are donating ten percent of the profits from book sales to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which devotes its efforts to opposing hate groups.

SAS Zero Hour

release date: Oct 30, 2017
SAS Zero Hour
The historian and author of Postwar Counterinsurgency and the SAS reveals the full story of how the Special Air Service Regiment began during WWII. Britain’s elite Special Air Service Regiment is one of the most revered special-ops units in the world. Its high-profile operations include the storming of the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980 and the hunt for Osama bin Laden in southern Afghanistan following 9/11. Since its inception during the Second World War, the SAS has become a byword for the highest possible standards in both conventional and unorthodox methods of warfare. In SAS Zero Hour, military historian and SAS expert Tim Jones offers fascinating new insight into how this elite regiment began. It is commonly held that the unit was the brainchild of just one man, David Stirling. While not dismissing Stirling’s considerable contribution, Jones’s historical investigation reveals many other factors that played a part in shaping the SAS, including the roles of military deception specialist Dudley Clarke, Field Marshals Archibald Wavell and Claude Auchinleck, and others. Drawing extensively on primary sources, as well as reassessing the more recent regimental histories and memoirs, SAS Zero Hour is “The most comprehensive and enlightening version of these seminal events yet” (Sir Ranulph Fiennes, from the Forward).

Future of Cities

release date: Jun 28, 2017
Future of Cities
Cities are often places of great energy and optimism. They are where most of us choose to live work and interact with others. As a result, cities are where innovation happens, where ideas are formed from which economic growth largely stems. Although wrestling with difficult challenges, sometimes individually but more often collectively, cities are able to address some of the most significant challenges facing society today. City councils around the world are reducing air pollution, banning diesel cars, introducing smoking bans, bicycle rental schemes and even imposing sugar taxes in order to help citizens make better lifestyle choices. Often nimbler than nation states, cities such as Paris, London, Mexico City, Aspen and Copenhagen are becoming test-beds for innovation that is then shared from one to another. There is much to be done and many city leaders are working on the challenges. However, as a steadily rising global population approaches 70% urbanization, the problems are now accelerating. City leaders today have to react quickly to accommodate vast influxes of people. There are many priorities; the provision of basic services - housing, water, sanitation, schools and hospitals; the establishment and maintenance of effective transport and technology infrastructures; the delivery of fair and effective policing; and the creation of an attractive business environment. The list is considerable. Now, perhaps more than ever, city leaders are seeking to better understand, share and explore options and future directions. No two cities are the same, so there is no universal blueprint on how best to design, manage and support urban growth. But experiences can be shared, lessons learned, models debated and new perspectives discussed. The Future Agenda team facilitated twelve high-level discussions in different cities around the world to explore this topic. This report provides an analysis of these and associated discussions and aims to provide context, highlight issues and provide insights around some of the key opportunities for positive change.
