The Long Walk to School

release date: Oct 20, 2017
The Long Walk to School
At the age of 9, Ruth loved school. She didn''t much care for the walk she had to make to get there every day, however, and didn''t really enjoy the chores that she and her sisters had to do each day as well. Racial segregation was alive and well in those days and white Americans kept African Americans in a subordinate status by denying them equal access to public facilities, such as buses, theaters and restaurants. When allowed into auditoriums and theaters, blacks occupied separate sections. They also attended segregated schools and churches, like Ruth and her family. But this was how life was in 1933, at school, in the community and around the farm where she lived and played. Read her absorbing story here, to get a feel for what life was like in the United States not so very long ago.

And You Shall Decree a Thing

release date: Aug 02, 2017
And You Shall Decree a Thing
Job 22:28 states, "Thou shalt also decree a thing and it shall be established unto thee and the light shall shine upon thy ways." This scripture is a powerful attestment to the power of spoken words, When we decree and declare according to God''s Word, we are operating in our dominion authority and activating our power to establish God''s will in the earth. This book reveals the importance of applying the biblical concept of decreeing and declaring to every area of our lives. God is constantly perfecting those things concerning us, however we have a part to play in this process. One of our major responsibilities, as people of faith, is to stand uncompromisingly upon God''s word. No matter what we are faced with, we must say the same thing that God says about our situations. This book is designed to provide easy access to biblical declarations that can be utilized to speak life and truth over particular areas and situations that we face on a daily basis. When we are diligent to speak God''s promises and not our problems, we will see the dark places of our lives illuminated. This book highlights the foundational truths found in the Bible and challenges us to Decide, Decree, and Declare according to its Holy Spirit-inspired instructions. Doing so allows the light of the Word to shine upon our ways!

The Domain Dependence of Chemotaxis in a Two-dimensional Turbulent Flow

release date: Jan 01, 2015
The Domain Dependence of Chemotaxis in a Two-dimensional Turbulent Flow
Presented is a study on the chemotaxis reaction process and its relation with flow topology. The effect of coherent structures in turbulent flows is characterized by studying nutrient uptake and the advantage that is received from motile bacteria over other non-motile bacteria. Variability is found to be dependent on the initial location of scalar impurity and can be tied to Lagrangian coherent structures through recent advances in the identification of finite-time transport barriers. Advantage is relatively small for initial nutrient found within high stretching regions of the flow, and nutrient within elliptic structures provide the greatest advantage for motile species. How the flow field and the relevant flow topology lead to such a relation is analyzed.

A Cross Case Study of Excellence in Science Fair Program Design

release date: Jan 01, 2015
A Cross Case Study of Excellence in Science Fair Program Design
The purpose of this study was to identify components of schools with successful science fair programs. Ideally schools interested in starting or improving their science fair programs could find a way to emulate some of the identified components. Successful was defined by having received recognition on some level at the International Science and Engineering Fair at least nine out of the last ten years. Twelve schools were identified as meeting this definition and five agreed to participate in the study. The schools represented diverse geographic areas as well as types of schools. Included in the study was a private school, two public schools and two public magnet schools. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, observations and document analysis. The climate of the school and the climate of the community were key features identified as helping to foster successful science fair programs. Unique features were identified as being present at most of the schools. These included embedding science research in the curriculum, requiring participation in science research for all students, flexible scheduling and offering elective science research classes. As the nation is increasingly focused on preparing students to enter STEM fields it seems that including science research in the science curriculum and emulating some of these unique components of successful science fair schools would be worth pursuing.

Age-related Genetic and Epigenetic Chromosomal Changes
The primary aims of this study were to examine acquired genetic and epigenetic changes that occur in individuals with increasing age and to determine how these changes are influenced by genetic/environmental factors. Acquired genetic changes were assessed by determining the frequency and chromosomal contents of spontaneously occurring micronuclei in identical and fraternal twins. A total of 115 individuals (48 twin pairs and 19 singletons) were evaluated, ranging in age from 7 to 85 years. As expected, micronuclei frequencies, which are indicative of genomic damage, significantly increased with age (p

Global Security Watch—Egypt

release date: Jun 30, 2008
Global Security Watch—Egypt
Despite the appearance of political and military stability, Egypt may be standing at the edge of a precipice as the state remains grounded in rigid authoritarianism while the population, including a struggling civil society, readies itself to make the leap to democratization. This characterization has far-reaching implications for relations between citizens and the government, as well as Egypt''s foreign affairs posture, particularly in the Middle East. State repression of civil, political, and religious actors; the ineffectual provision of social services; and two religious divides, between Coptic Christianity and Islam on the one hand, and secular and conservative Islamic traditions on the other, make for an incendiary domestic environment. The resulting over-reliance on security services to quash dissent could result in a population more amenable to less democratic methods of regime change and/or the development of stronger linkages between regional Islamist groups, whether they be political, militant, or some combination thereof. Global Security Watch—Egypt explores the historical background that created the current realities in Egypt and examines the players and events influencing the nation today. It concludes with a series of recommendations for the Egyptian political establishment, and for the American government, in the belief that meaningful political and policy changes in Egypt can lead to an improvement in human rights, democracy, justice, stability, and security for Egypt, and an improved partnership between Egypt and the United States.
