Four Years
W. B. Yeats''Äôs "Four Years" presents a deeply reflective collection of poems that capture the tumultuous interplay between personal experience and political upheaval, particularly in the context of early 20th-century Ireland. Written amid the complex backdrop of the Irish War of Independence and the subsequent civil unrest, Yeats employs a lyrical style imbued with symbolic resonance and rich imagery. This work showcases his mastery of form, blending traditional verse with modernist themes, leaving the reader to navigate the emotional terrain of love, loss, and national identity while grappling with philosophical questions about destiny and time. W. B. Yeats, a prominent figure in the Irish Literary Revival, was significantly influenced by the cultural and political currents of his time, which shaped both his poetic vision and his deep engagement with mythology and folklore. His involvement in the Irish nationalist movement and his subsequent disillusionment are poignantly echoed in "Four Years," where his personal attachments reflect larger societal fractures. This tension between personal and collective experience informs much of Yeats''s poetic discourse, revealing his foresight into the complexities of post-colonial identity. Readers who appreciate intricate constructions of language and compelling explorations of the human condition will find "Four Years" to be a profound meditation on the intersection of the personal and the political. As Yeats confronts the passage of time with poignant urgency, this work remains essential for those seeking to understand not only the nuances of Irish history but also the universal quest for meaning amid chaos.

The Celtic Twilight (Annotated Edition)
William Butler Yeats (13 June 1865 - 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th-century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments, he helped to found the Abbey Theatre, and in his later years served as an Irish Senator for two terms. Yeats was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival along with Lady Gregory, Edward Martyn and others. He was born in Sandymount, Ireland and educated there and in London. He spent childhood holidays in County Sligo and studied poetry from an early age when he became fascinated by Irish legends and the occult. These topics feature in the first phase of his work, which lasted roughly until the turn of the 20th century. His earliest volume of verse was published in 1889, and its slow-paced and lyrical poems display Yeats''s debts to Edmund Spenser, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and the poets of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. From 1900, his poetry grew more physical and realistic. He largely renounced the transcendental beliefs of his youth, though he remained preoccupied with physical and spiritual masks, as well as with cyclical theories of life. In 1923, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Cathleen Ni Houlihan
William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was an instrumental figure in the "Irish Literary Revival" of the 20th Century that redefined Irish writing. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923, and received honorary degrees from Queen''s University (Belfast), Trinity College (Dublin), and the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. It can be difficult to characterize Yeats. He was a complicated man whose work reflected the internal struggle he felt between art and life. In 1899 Yeats helped found the Irish National Theatre Society, which later became the famous Abbey Theatre of Dublin. Written in collaboration with Lady Gregory, "Cathleen Ni Houlihan" appeared on the bill of plays produced in 1902 by the theatre, and although a short work, it was frequently revived until World War II. The story is based on the battle at Killala, one of many conflicts in Ireland''s long fight for independence. Yeats depicts the love of family, poverty, anguish and hardship of the Irish peasantry through the symbolic portrayal of Ireland as a female spirit.

The Player Queen
William Butler Yeats was born near Dublin in 1865, and was encouraged from a young age to pursue a life in the arts. He attended art school for a short while, but soon found that his talents and interest lay in poetry rather than painting. His father''s love of reading aloud exposed Yeats early on to William Shakespeare, the Romantic poets and the pre-Raphaelites, and developed an interest in Irish myths and folklore. As a result, he became an instrumental figure in the "Irish Literary Revival" of the 20th Century that redefined Irish writing. In 1899 Yeats helped found the Irish National Theatre Society, which later became the famous Abbey Theatre of Dublin. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923, and received honorary degrees from Queen''s University (Belfast), Trinity College (Dublin), and the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. In this volume we find one of Yeats'' lesser-known works, "The Player Queen."
