Oft sind es nicht mehr als populäre Vorstellungen, die in zentralen Fragen den christlichen Glauben überlagern: Dass an Weihnachten ein Gottmensch vom Himmel fällt, nach dem Tod die Seele ins Jenseits gelangt, Glauben weniger ist als Wissen oder dass die Welt in einer großen Apokalypse endet. Es handelt sich um Schieflagen, die an der Wahrheit des Glaubens vorbeigehen. Hinter 13 derartige Schieflagen zu blicken und diese Themen von innen her zu erhellen, davon handelt das vorliegende Buch. Es beleuchtet die einzelnen Themenkomplexe in biblischer, geschichtlicher und theologischer Perspektive und zeigt auf dem Weg einer sachlichen Vertiefung, wie diese Fragen vom Glauben her im eigentlichen Sinn zu bezeugen sind.

The main objective of this research was to quantify the material strain limits for seismic assessment of existing sub-standard reinforced concrete bridge bents considering operational performance design criteria. Limited confidence exists in the current material strain limit state for operational performance criteria due to lack of experimental results considering the typical detailing of Oregon bridges and the cumulative damage effect resulting from an anticipated long-duration Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) event. Component details for bridge bents such as geometry and reinforcing details were determined through a statistical analysis of available bridge drawings built prior to 1990 in the State of Oregon. Three full-scale bridge bent column-footing subassembly specimens were constructed and subjected to reverse cyclic lateral deformations utilizing a traditional loading protocol and a protocol representing the demands expected from a CSZ earthquake. The tests were designed so that variable axial loading could be applied in order to simulate the secondary effects experienced in a column that is part of a multi-column bent during an earthquake event. Material strains along with global and local deformation quantities were measured with a suite of external and internal sensors mounted to and embedded in the specimens. Despite having sub-standard seismic detailing, all three specimens exhibited ductile behavior under reverse cyclic lateral loading, achieving a minimum displacement ductility of 8.0. The obtained results also suggest that the material strain limits currently used for the seismic evaluation of existing bridges in Oregon considering operational performance criteria are conservative, but may still require further experimental validation. Finally, strain limits based on previous research at Portland State University (PSU) were compiled and combined with the results from this study to propose recommended strain limit values.

This paper presents, discusses, and illustrates the practitioner-practitioner-researcher inquiry group (PPRIG) as a novel collaborative research approach involving practitioners as active partners instead of passive informants. Based on involvement of inside and outside practitioners a particular organization, PPRIG taps into outside practitioners'' specific potential for alternative ways of observing, reflecting, and sense-making, to better explore and understand the how and why of management phenomena and to develop practical solutions. By systematically adding an outside practitioner perspective to the widespread insider (practitioner) and outsider (researcher) perspective in collaborative research, PPRIG responds to certain key criticisms of collaborative methods by giving precise guidelines for achieving such collaboration. PPRIG thus complements and extends existing research methods in the field of collaborative research. Moreover, by addressing the communication and collaboration challenges with a structured three-step approach, it addresses key criticisms and answers fundamental questions about how to conduct collaboration between researchers and practitioners.

In Christian language usage, terms such as "baptism", "church" or "belief" are of central significance. They go back to the days of the New Testament. On the basis of the Pauline Letters, i.e. the oldest of the New Testament scriptures, the author identifies the usage of such terms and examines them from an historical semantic perspective. He thereby focuses on the Pauline use of the term ''pistis'' and its derivatives, which he examines and classifies etymologically with respect to the question of the emergence of a ''Christian language'', including the question of an adequate understanding of the syntagm ''pistis Iesou Christou''. While the current discourse is determined by the alternative meanings ''belief in Jesus Christ'' and ''belief of Jesus Christ'', this study proposes a new solution on the basis of etymological and idiomatic analyses.

Non-destructive testing methods and applications have become of increasing interest due to the worldwide aging and deteriorating infrastructure network. In the field of Civil Engineering, bridges and bridge components as well as non-structural elements such as roadway pavements for example, are affected. In particular, the Acoustic Emission (AE) technique offers the unique opportunity to monitor infrastructure components in real-time and detect sudden changes in the integrity of the monitored element. The principle is that dynamic input sources cause a stress wave to form, travel through the body, and create a transient surface displacement that can be recorded by piezo-electric sensors located on the surface. Commonly, analysis methods of purely qualitative nature are used to estimate the current condition or make predictions on the future state of a monitored component. Using quantitative analysis methods, source locations and characteristics can be deduced, similarly to the case for earthquake sources. If properly configured, crack formation and propagation can hence be quantified with this technique. The research work presented in this dissertation, however, goes past commonly found AE applications. Three novel applications have been developed: (1) a new prospective detection tool was discovered in the field of Transportation Engineering where AE sensors were employed to identify vehicles equipped with studded tires passing over bridges. Such vehicles cause costly damage each year to the roadway infrastructure network and this tool would enable gathering statistical data or enforcing legal dates for the use of studded tires. Load conditions of two full-scale laboratory bridge girders were estimated analyzing AE data collected from applied service-level loads using an earthquake prediction method called b-value analysis (2). It was found that this analysis method may assist in estimating the operating load conditions of in-service bridges. Finally (3), a novel framework for the development of a probabilistic stress wave source location algorithm based on Bayesian analysis methods is proposed. Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation was employed to estimate model parameters and predict source locations in full probabilistic form. Because variability in the materials and errors in the model can be included, a more accurate solution is available.
