Cheating Death

release date: Oct 12, 2009
Cheating Death
An unborn baby with a fatal heart defect . . . a skier submerged for an hour in a frozen Norwegian lake . . . a comatose brain surgery patient whom doctors have declared a "vegetable." Twenty years ago all of them would have been given up for dead, with no realistic hope for survival. But today, thanks to incredible new medical advances, each of these individuals is alive and well . . . Cheating Death. In this riveting book, Dr. Sanjay Gupta-neurosurgeon, chief medical correspondent for CNN, and bestselling author-chronicles the almost unbelievable science that has made these seemingly miraculous recoveries possible. A bold new breed of doctors has achieved amazing rescues by refusing to accept that any life is irretrievably lost. Extended cardiac arrest, "brain death," not breathing for over an hour-all these conditions used to be considered inevitably fatal, but they no longer are. Today, revolutionary advances are blurring the traditional line between life and death in fascinating ways. Drawing on real-life stories and using his unprecedented access to the latest medical research, Dr. Gupta dramatically presents exciting accounts of how pioneering physicians and researchers are altering our understanding of how the human body functions when it comes to survival-and why more and more patients who once would have died are now alive. From experiments with therapeutic hypothermia to save comatose stroke or heart attack victims to lifesaving operations in utero to the study of animal hibernation to help wounded soldiers on far-off battlefields, these remarkable case histories transform and enrich all our assumptions about the true nature of death and life.

World War C

release date: Sep 27, 2022
World War C
CNN chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, MD, offers an accessible, data-packed answer to our biggest questions about Covid-19: What have we learned about this pandemic and how can we prepare for—or prevent—the next one? As America’s favorite frontline Covid-19 health journalist, Dr. Sanjay Gupta has barely left his primetime seat in his makeshift studio basement since the pandemic began (other than to perform brain surgery). He’s had insider access to the drama’s unfolding, including exclusive conversations with the world’s top public health experts and behind-the-scenes scientists racing to find treatments and cures. And now he’s sharing what he’s learned in a book that will answer not only all our questions about what happened, but also about how our world will change in the years ahead, even once we’re back to “normal.” Gupta argues that we need to prepare for a new era where pandemics will be more frequent, and possibly even more deadly. As the doctor who’s been holding America’s hand through the crisis with compassion, clarity, and well-earned wisdom, he gives you the unvarnished story behind the pandemic, including insights about the novel virus’s behavior, and offers practical tools to ready ourselves for what lies ahead. He answers critical questions: Can we stamp out the virus for good (and if not, how do we live with it)? Should we put our parents in a nursing home? Where should we live? What should we stockpile? What should we know before taking a trip? Does it make sense to spend more on health insurance to deal with any long-term effects? How do you decide when it’s safe to go to a public pool or schedule elective surgery? What should Covid survivors know about protecting their future health? What if you become a long-hauler with chronic health challenges stemming? World War C will give you hope for the future along with real information that leaves you more resilient and secure.

Monday Mornings

Monday Mornings
Every time surgeons operate, they''re betting their skills are better than the brain tumor, the faulty heart valve, the fractured femur. Sometimes, they''re wrong. At Chelsea General, surgeons answer for bad outcomes at the Morbidity and Mortality conference, known as M & M. This extraordinary peek behind the curtain into what is considered the most secretive meeting in all of medicine is the back drop for the entire book. Monday Mornings, by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, follows the lives of five surgeons at Chelsea General as they push the limits of their abilities and confront their personal and professional failings, often in front of their peers at M & M. It is on Monday mornings that reflection and introspection occurs, usually in private. It is Monday Mornings that provides a unique look at the real method in which surgeons learn - through their mistakes. It is Monday Mornings when, if you''re lucky, you have a chance at redemption.

AI Super-Simplified

release date: May 01, 2024
AI Super-Simplified
Finally, AI (Artificial Intelligence) is presented in a "super-simplified" pictorially-rich-form, for the "rest of us" (‘non-techies’). The e-book not only explicates AI at the primer level (''IN PLAIN ENGLISH''), but also ventures into more complex areas for those wishing to explore current issues and of course all-important “future directions.” The MO used is an eclectic, and heavily pictorially-driven-method to explicate an extremely complex area: “What the heck is AI…''?” The author starts with quotes from renowned AI authorities, continues with the "W’s," (what when who where and why?”) and then proceeds in the next section to elaborate upon said W’s with at least 10 diagrammatic pictorials that each accomplish what ‘one thousand words…’ would. As part of the ’why?’ he presents essays from the leading academic institution that cover recent past issues, current issues and topics of interest, but perhaps most intriguing, what the future holds in this awe-inspiring field. Finally, he sums it all up with simple summaries in areas that do not already have “super-simplified” diagrammatic presentations.

Molecular insight: SERPINB3 and AR sensitivity might reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection and complications in prostate cancer patients receiving androgen-deprivation therapy

release date: Jun 17, 2021
Molecular insight: SERPINB3 and AR sensitivity might reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection and complications in prostate cancer patients receiving androgen-deprivation therapy
SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) entry into host cells is facilitated by the transmembrane protease TMPRSS2[1], which is expressed in both the lungs and prostate tissue[2]. Pre-clinical data suggest that TMPRSS2 expression can be modulated by the androgen receptor (AR)[3] and that androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) might protect patients from SARS-CoV-2 infection and reduces disease severity[4]. In a longitudinal study, Montopoli et al.[5], demonstrated that prostate cancer patients receiving ADT were likely to have four times less SARS-CoV-2 infection rates and disease severity compared with non-ADT patients. This study was supported by Patel et al.[4], where 58 prostate cancer patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 exhibited low disease severity and concluded that ADT might limit the severity of COVID-19 infection. However a study from Kwon et al.[6], was in disagreement with the above findings and revealed no association between ADT treatment and its protection against COVID-19 infection. Subsequently, Klein et al.[7] studying a cohort of prostate cancer patients who received ADT, the percentage rates of positive and negative COVID-19 cases were almost the same, 5.6% and 5.8% (OR = 0.93; P = 0.8), highlighting that ADT treatment does not appear to be protective against COVID-19 infection.

Dynamics of Human Rights in the US Foreign Policy

release date: Jan 01, 1998
Dynamics of Human Rights in the US Foreign Policy
The book revolves around the role of the US federal government in the protection and promotion of human rights at the global level. A comparative analysis of human rights policy of different US Presidencies toward various regions of the world is analysed. The book discusses the broad theoretical perspectives on human rights and goes on to trace the growth and development of human rights in the US foreign policy from the time of American Declaration of Independence of 1776. In particular, it assesses the role of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan in addressing the global human rights issues. Besides, the US policy toward the former Soviet Union, China and Latin America has also been elaborately examined. The US Declaration of Independence of 1776 together with the Bill of Rights of 1791 constitutes the bedrock of US commitment and dedication to human rights. The great American statesmen—Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Carter rendered yeomen service to the cause of human rights, both at home and the world at large. However, in practice, the concern for human rights during the successive US administrations has not been consistent as there were occasions when the US gave greater weightage to strategic-military relations and economic considerations than to human rights. Besides, there were instances when the US became a passive collaborator to human rights abuses committed by several of its allies, particularly in Latin America and Asia. Also, there were certain Presidencies as Nixon and Reagan that gave more rhetorical speeches and statements on human rights with little follow-up action. On the whole, the US human rights policy has been active, assertive and dynamic, and its application been region and situation specific.

Winning Super-Simplified
Finally, an “IN PLAIN ENGLISH” pictorially-driven e-booklet that explicates “winning,” in full, as accomplished by Bill Belichick, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, John D Rockefeller, others, and now soon to be-YOU… This author attempts to use an eclectic, and heavily pictorially-driven-method to explicate an extremely complex phenomenon: “What makes some people ‘winners,’ and yet others (most of us) that are of equal talent, ''non-winners…''?” The author starts with quotes from all-time greats, continues with the "psychology of success," anfd then proceeds with at least 50 diagrammatic pictorials that each accomplish what ‘one thousand words…’ would. Finally, he presents a two-step Finale, with "habits of winners," but then concludes with is own rather anti-climactic counter-intuitive yet fully integrated take on this diverse research…perhaps it’s just all about balance and doing overall good- on a daily basis, and not any singular event or achievement that unto itself will inevitably lead us to a feeling of incompleteness – especially in the Gestalt psychology school’s “Big Picture of good health-“sense…
