Zijn tijdloze verslagen uit de brandhaarden van de twintigste eeuw bezitten een ongekende poëzie en zeggingskracht. Wereldwijd heeft hij jonge schrijvers en journalisten geleerd te schilderen met woorden. In april 1970 werd de West-Duitse ambassadeur Graaf Karl von Spreti in Guatemala door rebellen ontvoerd en zes dagen later doodgeschoten. Het zou de aanzet zijn voor een van de meest omstreden verhalen van de Poolse journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski. Vanachter zijn bureau in Mexico-Stad volgde hij de berichtgeving over de moord in de internationale pers. Hij was verbijsterd. Volgens hem werd ‘het publiek misleid door journalisten’ die nimmer de waarheid over dictaturen en guerrillabewegingen openbaar maakten. De dood van de ambassadeur is door critici opgevat als het vergoelijken van politieke moord.
