Screenwriting
The great challenge in writing a feature-length screenplay is sustaining audience involvement from page one through 120. Screenwriting: The Sequence Approach expounds on an often-overlooked tool that can be key in solving this problem. A screenplay can be understood as being built of sequences of about fifteen pages each, and by focusing on solving the dramatic aspects of each of these sequences in detail, a writer can more easily conquer the challenges posed by the script as a whole. The sequence approach has its foundation in early Hollywood cinema (until the 1950s, most screenplays were formatted with sequences explicitly identified), and has been rediscovered and used effectively at such film schools as the University of Southern California, Columbia University and Chapman University. This book exposes a wide audience to the approach for the first time, introducing the concept then providing a sequence analysis of eleven significant feature films made between 1940 and 2000: The Shop Around The Corner / Double Indemnity / Nights of Cabiria / North By Northwest / Lawrence of Arabia / The Graduate / One Flew Over the Cuckoo''s Nest / Toy Story / Air Force One / Being John Malkovich / The Fellowship of the Ring

The Foundling

release date: Apr 04, 2017
The Foundling
This is the inspiring and “page-turning” (Booklist) true story of a man who discovered that he had been kidnapped as a baby—and how his quest to find out who he really is upturned the genealogy industry, his own family, and set in motion the second longest cold case in US history. In 1964, a woman pretending to be a nurse kidnapped an infant boy named Paul Fronczak from a Chicago hospital. Two years later, police found a boy abandoned outside a variety store in New Jersey. The FBI tracked down Dora Fronczak, the kidnapped infant’s mother, and she identified the abandoned boy as her son. The family spent the next fifty years believing they were whole again—but Paul was always unsure about his true identity. Then, four years ago—spurred on by the birth of his first child, Emma Faith—Paul took a DNA test. The test revealed that he was definitely not Paul Fronczak. From that moment on, Paul has been on a tireless mission to find the man whose life he’s been living—and to discover who abandoned him, and why. Poignant and inspiring, The Foundling is a story about a child lost and a faith found, about the permanence of families and the bloodlines that define you, and about the emotional toll of both losing your identity and rediscovering who you truly are.

Dynamical Systems-Based Soil Mechanics

release date: Apr 24, 2017
Dynamical Systems-Based Soil Mechanics
This book is a short yet rigorous course on a new paradigm in soil mechanics, one that holds that soil deformation occurs as a simple friction-based Poisson process in which soil particles move to their final position at random shear strains. It originates from work by Casagrande’s soil mechanics group at Harvard University that found that an aggregate of soil particles when sheared reaches a "steady-state" condition, a finding in line with the thermodynamics of dissipative systems. The book unpacks this new paradigm as it applies to soils. The theory explains fundamental, ubiquitous soil behaviors and relationships used in soils engineering daily thousands of times across the world, but whose material bases so far have been unknown. These include for example, why for one-dimensional consolidation, the e-log σ line is linear, and why Cα/Cc is a constant for a given soil. The subtext of the book is that with this paradigm, the scientific method of trying to falsify hypotheses fully drives advances in the field, i.e., that soil mechanics now strictly qualifies as a science that, in turn, informs geotechnical engineering. The audience for the book is senior undergraduates, graduate students, academics, and researchers as well as industry professionals, particularly geotechnical engineers. It will also be useful to structural engineers, highway engineers, military engineers, persons in the construction industry, as well as planetary scientists. Because its fundamental findings hold for any mass of particles like soils, the theory applies not just to soils, but also to powders, grains etc. so long as these are under pseudo-static (no inertial effects) conditions.

True Identity

release date: Dec 21, 2021
True Identity
When he was ten years old, Paul Fronczak was snooping around for Christmas presents in a crawl space in his family’s Chicago home. There, he found hundreds of old newspaper clippings about the kidnapping of a one-day-old infant in a hospital in 1964. He also learned that, two years later, the boy was found and returned to his family—and that the boy was him. Nearly fifty years later, Paul, acting on long-held suspicions, took a DNA test that proved he was not the kidnapped boy. In an instant, he found himself at the center of two half-century-old mysteries—who was he, and where was the real Paul? True Identity is about three separate major investigations—the hunt for the real Paul Fronczak; the search for the author’s missing twin sister Jill; and finally, the investigation into his true identity, his heart and soul and the demons inside him—inherited and created—that still need to be confronted.

Are Americans Becoming More Peaceful?

release date: Dec 03, 2015
Are Americans Becoming More Peaceful?
"It''s time that someone broke into the general gloom created by a war-loving administration and reminded us that we are a peace-loving people. Paul Joseph''s book does just that, not with fantasy but with facts, showing how the public antipathy to war, suppressed too long by propaganda and deception, is coming to the surface, and offers hope." Howard Zinn "In this antidote to despair, Joseph shows how even the most sophisticated efforts of US political and military leaders to maintain public support for war are flawed and doomed to failure in the face of an increasingly skeptical public that is unwilling to accept the costs." William A. Gamson, Boston College "An original and thought-provoking perspective on one of the most important issues in American politics today." Michael Klare, Hampshire College Are Americans becoming more peaceful -- even after the 2004 elections and the seeming affirmation of the war in Iraq? This book looks at the meaning of peace in the face of war and offers an optimistic interpretation of the public''s changing views. US citizens are becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the costs of war that can be measured not just in dollars but in lives and international respect. Americans are becoming ever more resistant to government management of the "facts" surrounding war. In areas ranging from media and photojournalism to gender and casualties, Joseph exposes the reality of popular opposition to war.

The Impact of Change Orders on Mechanical Construction Labor Efficiency

release date: Jan 01, 1996
The Impact of Change Orders on Mechanical Construction Labor Efficiency
Change orders impact many areas of construction projects. However, the impacts that change orders have on labor efficiency are much harder to quantify and are, therefore, a significant risk to contractors. Little research has been completed in the past quantifying these impacts so that disputes are common between owners and contractors regarding the actual cost of change. This study uses data from 43 projects, 27 impacted by changes and 16 not impacted by changes, to develop a linear regression model that predicts the impact on labor efficiency. The input factors needed for the model are: (1) Total Actual Project Hours, (2) Total Estimated Change Hours, (3) Impact Classification, and (4) Timing of Change. Timing of Change is calculated by breaking the project schedule down into six periods (i.e., changes before construction start, 0 - 20%, 20 - 40%, 40 - 60%A, 60 - 80%, and 80 - 100%), listing the percentage of change that occurred in each period, and calculating a weighted timing factor. The model calculates the labor loss or gain in efficiency for a particular project so that owners and contractors will better understand the true change impact on labor efficiency. Significant results have been found in hypothesis testing. The results show that impacted projects have larger amounts of change, have a larger decrease in labor efficiency, and are more impacted by change that occurs later in the project schedule. These results appear to be consistent with the intuitive judgement of industry professionals. The research is limited to the mechanical trade, but does include specific work in plumbing, HVAC, process piping, and fire protection.

The Science of Screenwriting

release date: Feb 08, 2018
The Science of Screenwriting
In a world awash in screenwriting books, The Science of Screenwriting provides an alternative approach that will help the aspiring screenwriter navigate this mass of often contradictory advice: exploring the science behind storytelling strategies. Paul Gulino, author of the best-selling Screenwriting: The Sequence Approach, and Connie Shears, a noted cognitive psychologist, build, chapter-by-chapter, an understanding of the human perceptual/cognitive processes, from the functions of our eyes and ears bringing real world information into our brains, to the intricate networks within our brains connecting our decisions and emotions. They draw on a variety of examples from film and television -- The Social Network, Silver Linings Playbook and Breaking Bad -- to show how the human perceptual process is reflected in the storytelling strategies of these filmmakers. They conclude with a detailed analysis of one of the most successful and influential films of all time, Star Wars, to discover just how it had the effect that it had.

Eyewitness to Infamy

release date: Oct 01, 2016
Eyewitness to Infamy
The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor changed the lives of almost every American, and began the process of putting 17 million of them in uniform to fight in World War II. Yet in the long and fascinating body of literature about this terrible event, most historians have neglected the compelling and moving accounts of the surviving military personnel and civilians who were on Oahu at the time of the attack, at dawn on December 7, 1941. Eyewitness to Infamy is their story—the astonishing oral history of the brutal attack that pushed the United States into WWII on the side of the Allies: the British, French, and Russians. With the help of the Pearl Harbor Survivors’ Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion, Paul Travers collected more than 200 eyewitness accounts from which he painstakingly selected those critical to this behind-the-scenes narrative account. With breathtaking clarity, the narratives cover the full range of military activity on the island, along battleship row, and around the harbor, while portraying the human side of the event—the heroic, the tragic, and the terrible reality of the assault.

Shimmerfrost

release date: Feb 07, 2024
Shimmerfrost
Ten years after the final events of the original novel Swordbane, a new adventure and plot unfolds. The heroes of the elite Order of the Comradery find themselves separated while pursuing and confronting a cultist caravan of the departed but glorified dark lord Dux Decius. Upon their ensuing confrontation, Marin and Linitus of the Comradery escape the ensuing turmoil of a collapsing cave mine by taking a portal to a faraway land in the north known as Shimmerfrost. Upon arriving, these two heroes must rely on each other for survival in a very hostile, cold, and unfamiliar land while uncovering a plot by a new villainous regional overlord known as Helskadi, the Winter Death Witch, who is poised to solidify her dominance over all the various beings of the region while relying heavily on her horde army of beastly creatures and the necromantic powers of a mysterious vassal of hers known as Wendigo. Eventually while seeking to return home, Marin and Linitus cross paths with various local inhabitants, including human Nordlings and an exotic group of anthropomorphic sentient beings known as dyr folk. Marin and Linitus set out to build a new alliance between these two groups after previously feuding with each other for countless years. Only through uniting these two groups can Marin and Linitus hope to have a chance of prevailing against Helskadi’s dark forces that threaten to usher in a new era of darkness in the region. Meanwhile, Duchess Lucia Diem, upon sacrificing her life for her son Lucianus to escape in the earlier confrontation against the Comradery, now finds herself in the presence of the deity spirit of death, Calu. Surprising the deity spirit by rejecting her intended destination of being united with many of her ancestors in the paradise of Caelum, Lucia instead chooses to be sent to the fiery realm of condemnation known as Hadao Infernum out of utter devotion to unite with her late lover, Decius. Upon uniting in the fiery realm of hell, the two soulmates rekindle their bond. They come to a new understanding together of their present abode while forging a new dark path of domination. Decius, with Lucia at his side, seeks to make a last bid to claim the title of the supreme dark lord of hell while waging a new war against the realm’s current reigning occupant, Orcus, the Lord of Punishment.

Genomic Adaptation for Organohalide Respiration of Vinyl Chloride and Other Priority Pollutants by the Anaerobic Bacterium Dehalococcoides

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Genomic Adaptation for Organohalide Respiration of Vinyl Chloride and Other Priority Pollutants by the Anaerobic Bacterium Dehalococcoides
Vinyl chloride (VC) is a widespread groundwater pollutant and Group 1 carcinogen. Microbial respiration of VC is both critical for complete remediation of chloroethenes in situ, and a unique physiology only observed by certain strains of Dehalococcoides. Two different genes independently encoding VC respiration in Dehalococcoides, vcrA and bvcA, were identified previously, each a member of the diverse family of reductive dehalogenase homologous genes, or rdhA. In this thesis I report that vcrA and bvcA are among a subset of putative ''foreign'' rdhA with a low GC3 codon usage that favors the nucleotide T, even though tRNAs recognizing T-ending codons are categorically absent in Dehalococcoides genomes. Comparative genomics of the first two complete genome sequences of microorganisms able to respire VC, Dehalococcoides strains VS and BAV1, reveals that vcrA and bvcA are both located within recently integrated, but different, genomic islands (GIs). These islands have different predicted integration sites and different relative positions in the genome, suggesting that bvcA and vcrA were acquired independently and through different mechanisms. In particular, the vcrA-containing GI appears to have integrated at the single-copy tmRNA encoding gene, ssrA, along with many other homologous elements that site-specifically integrate/excise at ssrA -- some of which contain other rdhA. A detailed analysis of these ''ssrA-GIs'' in Dehalococcoides identifies the precise position of insertion as well as a conserved module of syntenic integration-associated genes that includes the likely ssrA-specific integrase. Further analysis of (meta)genomic data, as well as targeted sequencing from 4 additional VC-respiring cultures, provided a total of 8 syntenic vcr-GIs from independently derived cultures. Evolutionary estimates for the age of divergence of these 8 vcrA sequences is not confidently distinguishable from the first industrial synthesis of chlorinated ethenes approximately 100 years ago. By contrast, the estimated age of divergence of Dehalococcoides strains far precedes industrial civilization. Overall, ssrA-GIs appear to be a major contributor to the second of two high plasticity regions, genetically dynamic regions that interrupt an otherwise stable, syntenic, and streamlined Dehalococcoides genome -- among the smallest of any free living microorganism. The apparent compartmentalization of Dehalococcoides genome dynamics within specialized regions may enhance opportunistic adaptation to (new) organohalide respiratory niches while protecting a core genome that is highly adapted to life in the anoxic subsurface, exemplified here by the recent site-specific acquisition of VC reductase genes.

Peace Politics

release date: Jan 01, 1993
Peace Politics
The end of the Cold War promises a new era of global peace in which domestic reform could be achieved. Yet armed conflict persists throughout the world. Economic inequality, declining public services, environmental degradation, and other forms of domestic decay threaten the quality of life in the U.S. In Peace Politics, Paul Joseph develops a systematic comparison of the "old" and "new" world orders that links foreign and domestic affairs. By examining the issues that are central to any realignment of American politics, he offers a sweeping account of the possibilities and obstacles for progressive change over the 1990s.Acknowledging that all nations and people have a right to security, he argues for a global attack against a broad range of shared threats, including human rights violations, nuclear devastation, poverty and despair, politically repressive governments, and environmental threats. Joseph also addresses the links between the militarism in the U.S. and deforestation of the Amazon, the uncertain victory of the Gulf War, the effect of public opinion on security issues, the impact of peace movements, nuclear weapons policy, and the need for a peace dividend.Linking war and peace issues with environmental renewal, stronger democracy, economic justice, and citizen activism, Peace Politics is a rallying cry for rationality, genuine security, and mutual survival. Author note: Paul Joseph is Associate Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Anthropology/Sociology Department and Peace and Justice Studies Program at Tufts University.

The Many Fruits of the Spirit
I went through the Bible and picked out verses relevant to the fruits of the spirit. This is a short but comforting and powerful book. I like to call it a highlight reel or a firework show of Bible verses. I learned the Bible talks about love and humility more than anything else. This book is also about coming back to God, and I hope it brings the assurance of salvation to many souls. May the angels and saints watch over all of us. God bless and thank you for reading my book, The Many Fruits of the Spirit.
