Se trata de la autobiografía novelada de Marina Nemat, una cristiana iraní que fue encarcelada durante los primeros años del régimen de Jhomeini, por encabezar una pequeña revuelta en su escuela contra el incremento de la propaganda religiosa en su colegio. Marina narra los conflictos de un país donde predominan el fanatismo islámico y la opresión de la mujer (es obligada a casarse con su guardián y a convertirse al islamismo). Escrito con emoción y sentimientos encontrados, llega a tener remordimientos por haber sobrevivido a otras prisioneras y querer a la familia musulmana de su marido, cuando ella ha renunciado a la suya.
