John McGahern

John McGahern
John McGahern (1934–2006) believed that fiction could act as a window on the world. Such windows, however, frame our fields of vision, alter and shape our perspectives. Far from being static, the artist’s perspective must continually evolve. This book provides a literary analysis of John McGahern’s artistic and poetic vision – his ‘ways of looking’, examining the shifting focus of this vision: how and why it develops, what effects such developments have on the work’s forms and how these forms evolve, at what times and in response to what stimuli. This volume demonstrates that such developments mirror an analogous social expansion during the latter half of the twentieth century and argues that McGahern’s literary spaces relate to his efforts to realise a more accommodating form to envelop the structureless society. While the number of critical studies on McGahern has increased markedly in recent years, research still tends to fall into the well-established camps of social realism or literary aestheticism. This text aims to explore the common ground between the material context and social worlds of each work and the hermeneutics of a ‘traditional’ literary investigation. It traverses such divides through close readings of McGahern’s work, with attention to the topopoetical production of images of the house, the home and the family unit. The book ultimately shows how attention to McGahern’s literary spaces provides a greater understanding of the aesthetic, vision and form of each novel and allows us to understand those aspects relative to the social, cultural and political undercurrents of the works individually and collectively.

Maplewood

release date: Mar 24, 2020
Maplewood
Written in Singleton''s engaging and narrative-driven style this book outlines the fascinating story of a town that is totally unique in US history. The town was a modern marvel born in the throes of a World War. Maplewood was built to house employees of the Cities Service Oil Company refinery in southwest Louisiana. Built as a national defense plant, it produced high octane gasoline for the World War II effort. This book would not have been possible without Mary Ann Mitchell Redd and her treasure trove of historic photographs and many clippings saved in a scrap book made by her mother. Book editor, John Singleton was raised in Maplewood and attended Maplewood school through ninth grade. He is a graduate of Sulphur High School (class of 1961) and received a BS in Engineering from McNeese State University (Lake Charles, LA) in 1972. During a career that spanned many years, he worked as a consulting engineer. John has been blessed with a wife of 54 years, two very talented offspring (one an RN, the other a DVM), and four grandchildren.

Economic and Natural Disasters since 1900

release date: Mar 25, 2016
Economic and Natural Disasters since 1900
A crisis is a period of uncertainty that may or may not lead to disaster, depending in part on the capacity of actors to make sense of what is happening and respond effectively. Disasters in different spheres occur and recur at different speeds and in idiosyncratic ways, but in essence they follow the same pattern. In the wake of the Global Financial Crisis and Eurozone upheavals this timely book argues that the disaster cycle – a framework normally used in the context of natural disasters – is equally applicable to the analysis of other types of catastrophe. Employing a modified version of the disaster cycle framework to compare and analyse a range of catastrophes in different spheres, the author draws on ideas from a variety of disciplines including economics and economic history, disaster studies, management, and political science. This unique comparative approach presents case studies of several important disasters: Hurricane Katrina, the First World War, the depression of the early 1930s, Welsh coal mining accidents, the deadly effects of smoking tobacco, and the Global Financial Crisis and Eurozone catastrophe of the early twenty first century. The author argues that economists and economic policy makers routinely misuse the term crisis to describe episodes that ought to be called disasters. This accessible and fascinating exploration will appeal to students and scholars in economic history, disaster studies, management, public policy, and related disciplines. The comparison of crisis and disaster management is also essential reading for policy makers.

Central Banking in the Twentieth Century

release date: Nov 25, 2010
Central Banking in the Twentieth Century
Central banks are powerful but poorly understood organisations. In 1900 the Bank of Japan was the only central bank to exist outside Europe but over the past century central banking has proliferated. John Singleton here explains how central banks and the profession of central banking have evolved and spread across the globe during this period. He shows that the central banking world has experienced two revolutions in thinking and practice, the first after the depression of the early 1930s, and the second in response to the high inflation of the 1970s and 1980s. In addition, the central banking profession has changed radically. In 1900 the professional central banker was a specialised type of banker, whereas today he or she must also be a sophisticated economist and a public official. Understanding these changes is essential to explaining the role of central banks during the recent global financial crisis.

John Singleton Copley in England

release date: Jan 01, 1995
John Singleton Copley in England
John Singleton Copley is well known in America as the creator of the finest portraits of the Colonial era. Less well known is the fact that he left America in 1774, when the impending armed struggle between the Colonies and England threatened to destroy his livelihood, and settled in London to pit himself ambitiously against the Old Masters and the English giants of the day. Copley''s English career was long and brilliant - and represents the most important period of his working life. During the forty-one years he spent in England, Copley created his great masterpieces of history painting and portraiture that stand as key monuments of British painting. From the earliest days of his career in London Copley realized that he would have to do everything possible to stand out in a crowded field of painters and create works that would bring him instant notice. This he did with his first great English picture, The Copley Family (1776-77) and, even more dramatically, with the landmark Watson and the Shark (1778). He quickly mastered the elements of the fashionable English style of painting, exchanging the tight and linear handling of the Colonial period for one more fluid and expressive. By the 1780s Copley was reckoned one of the most important painters working in England, a clear rival to his compatriot Benjamin West. With his masterpiece, The Death of Major Pierson (1784), Copley assumed a place of primacy in the field of history painting. While William L. Pressly gives a balanced, up-to-date exposition of Copley''s English career, Emily Ballew Neff examines his masterpiece, The Death of Major Pierson, in particular detail, and is the author of the catalogue of his major English works. This isa long overdue study of this important painter.
