The LIE That Changed The World
Romans slaughtered and enslaved millions of Jews in Israel. Only one thousand remained to seek refuge in a remote stronghold on the top of an isolated rock plateau overlooking the Dead Sea. The Romans ignored them until told that the King of Israel, named Jesus, was hiding in the remote fortress. The Romans immediately surrounded the mountain called Masada. They feared Jesus and were committed to destroying him. To reach the massive fort located 1300 feet above, they built access using a thousand Jewish slaves. Knowing the Romans would soon penetrate their citadel, Jesus and his wife, Mary Magdalene, wrote a historical scroll explaining his relationship with God and how he survived the crucifixion to live until he was 80 years old. The hastily written scroll revealed his early life and how he became King of Israeli. The scroll was completed and hidden beneath Masada just hours before the Romans entered the fortress. The scroll is discovered 1900 years later in a storage area deep within the Vatican and its secrets are revealed to the world.

A Messy Life

release date: Nov 15, 2017
A Messy Life
After the death of his wife Emily, Steven decides to honor her by walking from their Oregon home to Jerusalem where she was born. His life was messy and so is his walk. The word messy not only reflects Steven''s lifestyle but this book''s structure. There is no linear progression. It does not follow the standard novel structure of plot crisis resolution. It is closer to an anthology in many ways, yet the result creates a novel.Steven trudges through an Indian Reservation where spiritual mushrooms create a visit with Lewis and Clark. At one point he enters a vaginal sperm race to trace life''s source of DNA. His memory is swamped with life lessons learned around the world. Having lived and worked in Asia for several decades his memory is flooded with Thai massages and Chairman Mao''s savagery. Sex with his wife and others frequents his mind along with his views on religion, politics, love, and hate. He is almost killed by a tornado while debating Christianity and Islam with a country pastor. While recovering in the hospital he recalls the lessons that were responsible for his successful yet messy life. The dominant theme is the joy he gained from life with Emily and the horror of watching her decline in the arms of Lou Gehrig (ALS).

Some Women I Have Known

release date: Apr 29, 2015
Some Women I Have Known
Some Women I Have Known is a coming-of-age tale in which John van Dorn searches for his true love and meets some playful, perilous, and wonderful women along the way. He rides a pony with soon-to-be film star Audrey Hepburn, senses his first fondness of female attention at elementary school, experiences tender moments with his cello-playing sweetheart while at boarding school, loses his virginity in a risky adventure, then savors several dangerous and unfortunate loves in Paris, Amsterdam, Geneva and the Swiss Alps, learning that life is full of losses and ephemeral relationships. After rescuing a woman in the middle of Africa and a narrow escape of life and death, he finally finds peace of mind with a warm and beautiful Caribbean goddess in the United States. Some Women I Have Known is based on the nine short stories that the author published under the same overarching title on Amazon before, including the story how the author meets Audrey Hepburn in Holland during World War II when they were children. The stories have been rewritten into one self-standing novel to which is added the story Joy to the World (not previously published) which tells who John van Dorn finally marries. The content of some of the short stories has been slightly modified to mold them into a single story line. The title of the novel is taken from the bundle of short stories originally written under the same title by Maarten Maartens, aka Joost van der Poorten Schwartz, the Grand- Uncle of the Author, which was published by William Heineman, London, and D. Appleton & Company, New York, in 1901. This bundle of short stories, in a reprint, is also available on Amazon.com, but their content is, of course, totally different.

Oddly Normal

release date: Nov 08, 2012
Oddly Normal
A heartfelt memoir by the father of a gay teen, and an eye-opening story for families who hope to bring up well-adjusted gay adults. Three years ago, John Schwartz, a national correspondent at The New York Times, got the call that every parent hopes never to receive: his thirteen-year-old son, Joe, was in the hospital following a failed suicide attempt. After mustering the courage to come out to his classmates, Joe’s disclosure — delivered in a tirade about homophobic attitudes—was greeted with dismay and confusion by his fellow students. Hours later, he took an overdose of pills. Additionally, John and his wife, Jeanne, found that their son’s school was unable to address Joe’s special needs. Angry and frustrated, they initiated their own search for services and groups that could help Joe understand that he wasn’t alone. Oddly Normal is Schwartz’s very personal attempt to address his family’s own struggles within a culture that is changing fast, but not fast enough to help gay kids like Joe. Schwartz follows Joseph through childhood to the present day, interweaving his narrative with common questions, including: Are effeminate boys and tomboy girls necessarily gay? Is there a relationship between being gay and suicide or mental illness? Should a child be pushed into coming out? Parents, teachers, and counselors alike will welcome Oddly Normal and its crucial lessons about helping gay kids –and any kid who is different -- learn how to cope in a potentially hostile world.

Investigation of the Performance of Articular Cartilage and Synthetic Biomaterials in Multi-directional Sliding Motion as in Orthopedic Implants

release date: Jan 01, 2006
Investigation of the Performance of Articular Cartilage and Synthetic Biomaterials in Multi-directional Sliding Motion as in Orthopedic Implants
The performance of several synthetic biomaterials and bovine articular cartilage were investigated in terms of their suitability for use as articulating surfaces in artificial joints. The Dual-Axis Wear Simulator (DAWS), a wear testing machine that simulates conditions in a synovial joint, was designed and fabricated to enable investigators to measure the wear of such materials in multi-directional sliding while immersed in a bovine serum lubricant solution. This machine was used initially to determine the wear mechanisms and wear amounts of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyoxymethylene (POM), and the compliant elastomer Pellethane 2363-80A. It was found that the compliant material produced lower wear. Dynamic mechanical analysis was used to determine that bovine articular cartilage had a very significant amount of viscoelasticity to support static loads and damp impact loads. Furthermore, the use of a compliant counterface led to lower wear in the cartilage as compared to a rigid counterface. Pt-Zr quasicrystals were used as fillers in UHMWPE, and the wear, stiffness, and impact toughness of the filled polymer were shown to be comparable or better than those of UHMWPE that had been irradiation crosslinked. Crosslinked UHMWPE was investigated for its susceptibility to oxidative degradation and increased wear. It was found that thermal stabilization of the polymer could be eliminated if a mild amount crosslinking was used. Furthermore, there was no degradation in wear resistance of mildly crosslinked and non-stabilized UHMWPE even after accelerated aging. Based on the results of this work and lessons learned about compliance and wear resistance, blends were produced by using surface-activated UHMWPE particles as fillers in elastomeric PUR. The blends showed better wear resistance than UHMWPE, as well as increased stiffness and damping over PUR. The results of this work indicated that there is great potential for the development of new biomaterials and materials treatment methods to produce more durable articulating components in artificial joints.

Living Terrors

Living Terrors
America is one killer organism away from a living nightmare that threatens all we hold dear.... A deadly cloud of powdered anthrax spores settles unnoticed over a crowded football stadium.... A school cafeteria lunch is infected with a drug-resistant strain of E. coli.... Thousands in a bustling shopping mall inhale a lethal mist of smallpox, turning each individual into a highly infectious agent of suffering and death.... Dr. Michael Osterholm knows all too well the horrifying scenarios he describes. In this eye-opening account, the nation’s leading expert on bioterrorism sounds a wake-up call to the terrifying threat of biological attack — and America’s startling lack of preparedness. He demonstrates the havoc these silent killers can wreak, exposes the startling ease with which they can be deployed, and asks probing questions about America’s ability to respond to such attacks. Are most doctors and emergency rooms able to diagnose correctly and treat anthrax, smallpox, and other potential tools in the bioterrorist’s arsenal? Is the government developing the appropriate vaccines and treatments? The answers are here in riveting detail — what America has and hasn’t done to prevent the coming bioterrorist catastrophe. Impeccably researched, grippingly told, Living Terrors presents the unsettling truth about the magnitude of the threat. And more important, it presents the ultimate insider’s prescription for change: what we must do as a nation to secure our freedom, our future, our lives.
