Major James Reed, Military Intelligence, deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom from Germany with V Corps headquarters, G2 operations section, and arrived in Kuwait in November 2002, roughly four months before the actual invasion. Assigned to the tactical command post (TAC CP), Reed was part of the corps' units that crossed the berm to execute command and control. The two other command posts did not. The TAC CP still numbered some 200 personnel, with an US Air Force contingent. When the corps headquarters crossed the berm, an infantry company with attachments supported it for security. Reed worked in a G2 section of five soldiers, part of the larger analysis and control element. Once in Iraq, this corps headquarters element moved for three days before setting up at the Karbala Gap. Intelligence operations consisted of pulling information and nascent intelligence from the subordinate division. In Reed's case, this meant developing a relationship with the 3rd Infantry Division which was heavily involved in the fight. The corps had Hunter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for imagery, but these UAVs could only stage from improved airfields, initially complicating coordination and support. Once Baghdad fell, the corps command post displaced to what became Camp Victory at the Saddam International Airport. Reed took the S2 position with the 18th Military Police Brigade soon after, replacing their medically evacuated intelligence officer. The 18th MP Brigade, under the leadership of Colonel Teddy Spain, aggressively patrolled Baghdad. Reed's S2 element and intelligence operations faced some challenges assimilating non-military intelligence personnel into their roles in the S2 element, as well as affecting the indirect professional development of junior intelligence officers in the subordinate battalions as S2s. Twenty-four-hour operations challenged all personnel as they incorporated incoming information into intelligence summaries for the brigade's use, as well to be passed higher to 1st Armored Division and Combined Joint Task Force 7. Working with and training surviving Iraqi Police elements with few interpreters presented some challenges, too. Reed deployed off the forward operating base with a tactical human intelligence team several times a week to get a sense of the fluid battlefield. Further operational and intelligence awareness came from daily interaction with the aggressive brigade commander. The 18th MP Brigade rotated out of Iraq and Reed with it, replaced after a short, frustrating transition by the 89th MP Brigade. In his interview, Reed also tells the story of how he and an Iraqi Police unit he was patrolling with one day may well have seen the fugitive Saddam Hussein months before his eventual capture.

A multi-function compact chemical reactor designed for hydrocarbon steam reforming was evaluated. The reactor design is based on diffusion bonded laminate micro-channel heat exchanger technology. The reactor consists of a combustor layer, which is sandwiched between two steam reforming layers. Between the two function layers, a temperature monitoring and control layer is placed, which is designed to locate the temperature sensors. The combustor layer has four individually controlled combustion zones each connected to a separate fuel supply. The reactor design offers the potential to accurately control the temperature distribution along the length of the reactor using closed loop temperature control. The experimental results show that the variance of temperature along the reactor is negligible. The conversion efficiency of the combustor layer is approximately 90 to 100%. The heat transfer efficiency from combustion layer to reforming layers is 65% to 85% at 600°C and 400°C, respectively. A sulphur tolerant catalyst, designed for use with LPG, was washcoated on to the reforming layers. The reformer was tested over a wide range of reactor temperatures, steam to carbon ratios and fuel flow rates. To increase the reformer performance a second nickel-based catalyst was added to the rear of the reformer. The multi-zoned combustor enabled the two catalysts to be operated at differing temperatures as required. The reformer was tested over a further range of operating temperatures, steam to carbon ratios and feed rates whilst using the fuels, LPG, C3Hg and CH4. The performance of the reformer whilst using C3Hg and LPG showed good agreement suggesting that the performance of the reformer was not adversely affected by the presence of sulphur in the fuel. 98% conversion of C3Hg was achieved at a predicted fuel cell power output of 1.98kWe.
