The Illustrated Ray Bradbury

release date: Mar 12, 2013
The Illustrated Ray Bradbury
Ray Bradbury was one of the first science fiction writers to achieve both popular success and critical acclaim. His books have not only sold millions of copies, but have been accepted as serious literature in an age when science fiction is still burdened by the stigma of being "pulp literature." This book, a revised and expanded Second Edition of the 1990 chapbook, examines the Ray Bradbury phenomenon through a structuralist reading of five stories from his major collection, The Illustrated Man, together with the narrative framework (the prologue and epilogue), which ties the stories together to form a complete work. The analysis will show some of Bradbury''s major literary themes, and highlight the narrative techniques used in his short stories. A first-rate examination of one of science fiction''s seminal authors. The Milford Series: Popular Writers of Today, Vol. 77.

John Henry Newman

release date: Oct 23, 2014
John Henry Newman
John Henry Newman''s writings and his lifelong search for religious truth continue to influence thought within a range of disciplines, most notably theology, philosophy and education. One of his most significant contributions was to the understanding of higher education contained within his nineteenth century writings, in particular his volume of lecturers entitled The Idea of a University, which has helped shape religious and educational thought over two centuries. Newman''s claim that university education, the pursuit of universal knowledge and truth, is as much an education in pure and practical knowledge as in moral life, provides a continuing source of challenge and inspiration to education leaders today much as it did in the nineteenth century. James Arthur examines Newman''s key strengths and weaknesses and locates these firmly within the intellectual context of his time, providing an overview of his work that allows students to appreciate the importance of his thought both within and outside the Catholic tradition.

Excavating Stephen King

release date: Oct 28, 2020
Excavating Stephen King
Excavating Stephen King: A Darwinist Hermeneutic Study of the Fiction combines approaches from science and literary theory to examine the canon of Stephen King’s fiction work in a single critical study. James Arthur Anderson has devised the concept of Darwinist Hermeneutics as a critical tool to combine evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, biology, and literary Darwinism with other more conventional critical theory, including structuralism, narratology, semiotics, and linguistic analysis. Using this theory, Anderson examines King’s works in terms of archetypes and mythology, human universals, affective emotions, and the organization of story to create maximum suspense. This method brings new insights into King’s stories and broader implications for storytelling as a whole.

The Formation of Character in Education

release date: Aug 29, 2019
The Formation of Character in Education
The Formation of Character: From Aristotle to the 21st Century offers an introduction to the foundations, practices, policies and issues of character formation historically. Following a chronological order, it charts the idea of character formation in the Western tradition by critically examining its precursors, origins, development, meanings and uses. The book is based on the premise that current conditions and debates around character formation cannot be fully understood without knowledge of the historical background. It introduces many of the debates character formation has generated in order to offer different perspectives and possibilities and uses Aristotle as a lens to gain a better understanding of some of these positions, particularly the theoretical goals of character formation. Chapters explore character education from the classical period through the medieval, early modern, enlightenment and Victorian eras to 20th century influences, ending with a discussion of contemporary policies and themes relating to character education. This book will appeal to academics, researchers, and post-graduate students in the fields of character and virtue education as well as the history of education.

The Last Trumpet

release date: Jan 01, 1996
The Last Trumpet
The nineteenth-century English slide trumpet was the last trumpet with the traditional sound of the old classic trumpet. The instrument was essentially a natural trumpet to which had been added a movable slide with a return mechanism. It was England''s standard orchestral trumpet, despite the dominance of natural and, ultimately, valved instruments elsewhere, and it remained in use by leading English players until the last years of the century. The slide trumpet''s dominating role in nineteenth-century English orchestral playing has been well documented, but until now, the use of the instrument in solo and ensemble music has been given only superficial consideration. Art Brownlow''s study is a new and thorough assessment of the slide trumpet. It is the first comprehensive examination of the orchestral, ensemble and solo literature written for this instrument. Other topics include the precursors of the nineteenth-century instrument, its initial development and subsequent modifications, its technique, and the slide trumpet''s slow decline. Appendices include checklists of English trumpeters and slide trumpetmakers.

Jewish Theology Unbound

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Jewish Theology Unbound
Jewish Theology Unbound challenges the widespread misinterpretation of Judaism as a religion of law as opposed to theology. James A. Diamond provides close readings of the Bible, classical rabbinic texts, Jewish philosophers, and mystics from the ancient, medieval, and modern period, which communicate a profound Jewish philosophical theology on human nature, God, and the relationship between the two. The study begins with an examination of questioning in the Hebrew Bible, demonstrating that what the Bible encourages is independent philosophical inquiry into how to situate oneself in the world ethically, spiritually, and teleologically. It explores such themes as the nature of God through the various names by which God is known in the Jewish intellectual tradition, love of others and of God, death, martyrdom, freedom, angels, the philosophical quest, the Holocaust, and the state of Israel, all in light of the Hebrew Bible and the way it is filtered through the rabbinic, philosophical, and mystical traditions.
