Rob Roy Illustrated by Walter Scott

release date: Nov 07, 2021
Rob Roy Illustrated by Walter Scott
Rob Roy (1817) is a historical novel by Walter Scott, one of the Waverley novels. It is probably set in 1715, the year of the first Jacobite uprising, and the social and economic background to that event are an important element in the novel, though it is not treated directly. The depiction of Rob Roy bears little relation to the historical figure: ''there are two Rob Roys. One lived and breathed. The other is a good story, a lively tale set in the past. Both may be accepted as "valid", but they serve different needs and interests.'' Frank Osbaldistone narrates the story. He is the son of an English merchant who parted from his family home in the north of England near the border with Scotland when he was a young man, being of different religion and temperament than his own father or his younger brother. Frank is sent by his father to live at the long unseen family home with his uncle and his male cousins, when he refuses to join his father''s successful business. In exchange, his father accepts Frank''s cousin Rashleigh to work in his business. Rashleigh is an intelligent young man, but he is unscrupulous, and he causes problems for the business of Osbaldistone and Tresham. To resolve the problems, Frank travels into Scotland and meets the larger-than-life title character, Rob Roy MacGregor.

Ivanhoe: A Romance
Ivanhoe A Romance Walter Scott - Ivanhoe, set in 12th century England, has been credited for increasing interest in romance and medievalism; John Henry Newman claimed Scott "had first turned men''s minds in the direction of the Middle Ages", while Carlyle and Ruskin made similar assertions of Scott''s overwhelming influence over the revival, based primarily on the publication of this novel.

Ivanhoe: a Romance

release date: Aug 16, 2021
Ivanhoe: a Romance
Ivanhoe: A Romance by Walter Scott is a historical novel published in three volumes, in 1819, as one of the Waverley novels. At the time it was written, the novel represented a shift by Scott away from writing novels set in Scotland in the fairly recent past to a more fanciful depiction of England in the Middle Ages. Ivanhoe proved to be one of the best-known and most influential of Scott''s novels. Set in 12th-century England, with colourful descriptions of a tournament, outlaws, a witch trial, and divisions between Jews and Christians, Ivanhoe is credited for increased interest in chivalric romance and medievalism. John Henry Newman claimed that Scott "had first turned men''s minds in the direction of the Middle Ages", while Thomas Carlyle and John Ruskin likewise asserted Scott''s great influence upon the revival of interest in the medieval period, primarily based upon the publication of the novel Ivanhoe.[1] Moreover, Ivanhoe much influenced popular perceptions of Richard the Lionheart, King John, and Robin Hood.

Old Mortality

release date: May 14, 2021
Old Mortality
Set in Southern Scotland among a time of religious turmoil in the 17th century, Old Morality depicts a young soldier, Henry Morton, as he becomes involved with the armed struggle between two religious groups—the Covenanters and the Cavaliers. While the Cavaliers supported the church of England, Covenanters wished for Scotland to convert to pure Presbyterianism. With neither group accepting their differences, social tensions ran high in Scotland. This all comes to head at a competitive event hosted by Lady Margaret Bellenden, who is a loyal Covenanter. Described as a wapenshaw, a group of soldiers from varying backgrounds assembled to compete against each other. When Henry, the son of a Covenanter, defeats a Cavalier favorite, trouble follows. Though Henry is soon introduced to Lady Margaret Bellenden and her lovely daughter, Edith, his victory is short-lived as the competition arouses unhealthy and aggressive feelings among the opposing groups. After Henry stands up for a man being bullied by the Cavaliers, the two become friends. However, when Henry discovers a secret about his new friend, he is forced to become an outlaw, fleeing from the vindictive Cavalier patrols. Centered around true events of an uprising in 1679, Old Morality is praised as one of Sir Walter Scott’s best novels. Written in with a whimsical fashion, fascinating Scottish dialect, and flowing prose, critics appreciated the characters and descriptions featured in Old Morality, along with its delightful elements of romance, action, and adventure. Though published over two-hundred years ago, Old Morality depicts a serious struggle between religions, portraying themes and ideology that remains to be relevant to modern society, while simultaneously offering invaluable insight on the intriguing social and religious history of Scotland. This edition of Old Morality by Sir Walter Scott now features a striking new cover design and is printed in a font that is both modern and readable. With these accommodations, this edition of Old Morality crafts an accessible and pleasant reading experience for modern audiences while restoring the original mastery and drama of Sir Walter Scott’s literature.

Guy Mannering; Sir Walter Scott

On the way he encounters the larger-than-life title character, Rob Roy MacGregor. Though Rob Roy is not the lead character (in fact, the narrative does not move to Scotland until halfway through the book), his personality and actions are key to the novel''s development. *Plot Summary* Francis "Frank" Osbaldistone tells the story of his adventures as a young man at the beginning of the 18th century, wherein he falls in love with a beautiful young woman, gallantly rides to Scotland to save his estranged father''s reputation and business, and becomes involved with the remarkable Highlander, Rob Roy, even as a Jacobite rebellion breaks out in Scotland and northern England. His tale begins with his return to his father William''s merchant house of Osbaldistone and Tresham in Crane Alley, London, from an apprenticeship in a French associate''s business. There, he meets with his business-minded father''s anger and disappointment, since he has been more preoccupied with writing poetry than learning the business, much to his father''s disgust.William was originally disinherited (for reasons unknown) in favor of his younger brother Sir Hildebrand Osbaldistone, who has inherited both the family fortune and the family seat of Osbaldistone Hall instead. William, turned out of the house to make his own way, has built a successful business with his trading company in the City.Owen, the Head Clerk of Osbaldistone and Tresham and a long time friend of the family, attempts to persuade Frank to follow his father''s wishes and succeed in the business. In spite of this, Frank decides to follow his own way, assuming his father will support him. Instead, William decides to send him to stay with his uncle Hildebrand in Northumberland, near the border with Scotland.Frank sets out and joins a group of travellers both for protection and company. During the long journey, he observes that one of the travelers is nervous and protective of a box that he carries. Frank begins to tease the traveler, Morris, pretending to assume an interest in the mysterious box....etc... Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet, FRSE (15 August 1771 - 21 September 1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet with many contemporary readers in Europe, Australia, and North America. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Old Mortality, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor. Although primarily remembered for his extensive literary works and his political engagement, Scott was an advocate, judge and legal administrator by profession, and throughout his career combined his writing and editing work with his daily occupation as Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire. A prominent member of the Tory establishment in Edinburgh, Scott was an active member of the Highland Society and served a long term as President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (1820-32)........
