Genesis

release date: Nov 19, 2024
Genesis
In his final book, the late Henry Kissinger joins forces with two leading technologists to mount “a profound exploration” (Walter Isaacson) of the epochal challenges and opportunities presented by the revolution in Artificial Intelligence: a breakthrough that dramatically empowers people in all walks of life while also raising urgent questions about the future of humanity. As it absorbs data, gains agency, and intermediates between humans and reality, AI (Artificial Intelligence) will help us to address enormous crises, from climate change to geopolitical conflicts to income inequality. It might well solve some of the greatest mysteries of our universe and elevate the human spirit to unimaginable heights. But it will also pose challenges on a scale and of an intensity that we have never seen—usurping our power of independent judgment and action, testing our relationship with the divine, and perhaps even spurring a new phase in human evolution. The last book of elder statesman Henry Kissinger, written with technologists Craig Mundie and Eric Schmidt, Genesis charts a course between blind faith and unjustified fear as it outlines an effective strategy for navigating the age of AI.

My Path to Dying to Self, Spiritual Dynamics, and the Struggle of the Modern-Day Christian

release date: Dec 22, 2021
My Path to Dying to Self, Spiritual Dynamics, and the Struggle of the Modern-Day Christian
I am a part of a traveling ministry and visit home churches around the United States. Starting in late 2002. In that time I have seen a great many Christians from all around the nation in many different situations. I had what I thought Christians were like and what they did and didn''t do. But quickly found out that Christians didn''t always act the way they should or knew one thing really well, but not another. Things I''ve seen that repeated over and over again, in many situations. It''s not like you can go up to someone and tell them what they are doing very easily. I felt it was better for me to write about what I have seen and what should be. I have also written in this book about my personal struggles to attain godliness. I view dying to self as a continual process, and that one has never fully arrived; there are many veils peeled away in due process. I believe that there are still levels of maturity that are not even attained yet. I felt I could fully say what I would like all Christians to hear. This is my portion, and it is incomplete, because everybody has a piece to the puzzle. "We need to have humility to take our pieces and to put them together"(paraphrased Rick Joyner). I''m not the all in all who knows all things, I''m not perfect. I am not an intense person, so I try to say things in such a way to try to not offend, but on the other side, I feel that the truth needs to be said. I think we often overlook the simple things Jesus said in the gospels, many things that we often forget about. This book was written in spurts all around the nation over a period of about 15 years. If you want to know what the book is about, the easiest way is to go through the chapters list (topics). The Age of AI

release date: Nov 02, 2021
The Age of AI
Three of the world’s most accomplished and deep thinkers come together to explore Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the way it is transforming human society—and what this technology means for us all. An AI learned to win chess by making moves human grand masters had never conceived. Another AI discovered a new antibiotic by analyzing molecular properties human scientists did not understand. Now, AI-powered jets are defeating experienced human pilots in simulated dogfights. AI is coming online in searching, streaming, medicine, education, and many other fields and, in so doing, transforming how humans are experiencing reality. In The Age of AI, three leading thinkers have come together to consider how AI will change our relationships with knowledge, politics, and the societies in which we live. The Age of AI is an essential roadmap to our present and our future, an era unlike any that has come before.

The Church of Saint Thomas Paine

release date: Nov 02, 2021
The Church of Saint Thomas Paine
The forgotten story of the nineteenth-century freethinkers and twentieth-century humanists who tried to build their own secular religion In The Church of Saint Thomas Paine, Leigh Eric Schmidt tells the surprising story of how freethinking liberals in nineteenth-century America promoted a secular religion of humanity centered on the deistic revolutionary Thomas Paine (1737–1809) and how their descendants eventually became embroiled in the culture wars of the late twentieth century. After Paine’s remains were stolen from his grave in New Rochelle, New York, and shipped to England in 1819, the reverence of his American disciples took a material turn in a long search for his relics. Paine’s birthday was always a red-letter day for these believers in democratic cosmopolitanism and philanthropic benevolence, but they expanded their program to include a broader array of rites and ceremonies, particularly funerals free of Christian supervision. They also worked to establish their own churches and congregations in which to practice their religion of secularism. All of these activities raised serious questions about the very definition of religion and whether it included nontheistic fellowships and humanistic associations—a dispute that erupted again in the second half of the twentieth century. As right-wing Christians came to see secular humanism as the most dangerous religion imaginable, small communities of religious humanists, the heirs of Paine’s followers, were swept up in new battles about religion’s public contours and secularism’s moral perils. An engrossing account of an important but little-known chapter in American history, The Church of Saint Thomas Paine reveals why the lines between religion and secularism are often much blurrier than we imagine.

The Age of A.I.

release date: Sep 14, 2021
The Age of A.I.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming human society fundamentally and profoundly. Not since the Enlightenment and the Age of Reason have we changed how we approach knowledge, politics, economics, even warfare. Three of our most accomplished and deep thinkers come together to explore what it means for us all. An A.I. that learned to play chess discovered moves that no human champion would have conceived of. Driverless cars edge forward at red lights, just like impatient humans, and so far, nobody can explain why it happens. Artificial intelligence is being put to use in sports, medicine, education, and even (frighteningly) how we wage war. In this book, three of our most accomplished and deep thinkers come together to explore how A.I. could affect our relationship with knowledge, impact our worldviews, and change society and politics as profoundly as the ideas of the Enlightenment.

Is China Beating the U.S. to AI Supremacy?
Combining decades of experience advancing frontier technologies, on the one hand, and analyzing national security decisionmaking, on the other, we have been collaborating over the past year in an effort to understand the national security implications of China’s great leap forward in artificial intelligence (AI). Our purpose in this essay is to sound an alarm over China’s rapid progress and the current prospect of it overtaking the United States in applying AI in the decade ahead; to explain why AI is for the autocracy led by the Chinese Communist Party an existential priority; to identify key unanswered questions about the dangers of an unconstrained AI arms race between the two digital superpowers; and to point to the reasons why we believe that this is a race the United States can and must win.

Village Atheists

release date: Dec 18, 2018
Village Atheists
A compelling history of atheism in American public life A much-maligned minority throughout American history, atheists have been cast as a threat to the nation’s moral fabric, barred from holding public office, and branded as irreligious misfits in a nation chosen by God. Yet village atheists—as these godless freethinkers came to be known by the close of the nineteenth century—were also hailed for their gutsy dissent from stultifying pieties and for posing a necessary secularist challenge to the entanglements of church and state. In Village Atheists, Leigh Eric Schmidt explores the complex cultural terrain that unbelievers have long had to navigate in their fight to secure equal rights and liberties in American public life. He rebuilds the history of American secularism from the ground up, giving flesh and blood to these outspoken infidels. Village Atheists demonstrates that the secularist vision for the United States proved to be anything but triumphant in a country where faith and citizenship were—and still are—closely interwoven.

Warrant Officer Program, why Not?

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Warrant Officer Program, why Not?
"This paper explores the feasibility of the United States Air Force (USAF) bringing back the Warrant Officer Program. The USAF is currently faced with high turnover and retention challenges in Career Special Re-enlistment Bonus (CSRB) Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSC) career fields. Furthermore, the USAF is exploring using enlisted members to supplement the Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) force structure. Rather, the USAF should convert all 1136 RPA pilots to warrant officers (WO) and utilize the overage of WO’s, assuming a 1 officer to 1.6 warrant officer conversion rate to supplement CSRB AFSC’s by bringing back the Warrant Officer Program. This paper will argue that bringing back the WO corps to the USAF can ease their retention, turnover and RPA challenges while providing vertical job opportunities for some enlisted personnel who currently either separate from the USAF or join another sister service that offer WO opportunities. Bringing back the WO in the USAF will also allow pilots to remain in their desired airframe without having to serve an RPA tour, something that historically has led to pilots separating from the USAF. The USAF would be well served by converting all current RPA and vacant junior officer positions to WO’s, expanding the current Officer Training School class size to allow enlisted members to earn their warrant commission and distribute all of the remaining WO positions across the CSRB career fields to ease turnover and retention issues."--Abstract.

How Google Works
Seasoned Google executives Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg provide an insider''s guide to Google, from its business history and disruptive corporate strategy to developing a new managment philosophy and creating a corporate culture where innovation and creativity thrive. Seasoned Google executives Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg provide an insider''s guide to Google, from its business history and disruptive corporate strategy to developing a new managment philosophy and creating a corporate culture where innovation and creativity thrive. Google Executive Chairman and ex-CEO Eric Schmidt and former SVP of Products Jonathan Rosenberg came to Google over a decade ago as proven technology executives. At the time, the company was already well-known for doing things differently, reflecting the visionary-and frequently contrarian-principles of founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. If Eric and Jonathan were going to succeed, they realized they would have to relearn everything they thought they knew about management and business. Today, Google is a global icon that regularly pushes the boundaries of innovation in a variety of fields. How Google Works is an entertaining, page-turning primer containing lessons that Eric and Jonathan learned as they helped build the company. The authors explain how technology has shifted the balance of power from companies to consumers, and that the only way to succeed in this ever-changing landscape is to create superior products and attract a new breed of multifaceted employees whom Eric and Jonathan dub "smart creatives." Covering topics including corporate culture, strategy, talent, decision-making, communication, innovation, and dealing with disruption, the authors illustrate management maxims ("Consensus requires dissension," "Exile knaves but fight for divas," "Think 10X, not 10%") with numerous insider anecdotes from Google''s history, many of which are shared here for the first time. In an era when everything is speeding up, the best way for businesses to succeed is to attract smart-creative people and give them an environment where they can thrive at scale. How Google Works explains how to do just that.

Distinctive Capabilities

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Distinctive Capabilities
"In June 2011, Eglin Air Force Base receives its first production-model F-35. While this marks a significant milestone in the Department of Defense''s (DoD) biggest acquisition program, many more milestones remain. Recent government reports highlight the uncertainty of both the program cost and the tactical capabilities the F-35 will provide. In addition, even if the Air Force purchases and receives all 1,763 of its planned F-35s, the total Air Force fighter inventory will fall short of its stated goal of 2,200 fighter aircraft. Along with this shortfall, the Air Force continues to struggle to find money and a timeline for the proposed "Next-Generation Bomber" which will ultimately replace the B-1 and B-52. Combined, these factors cast doubt over the Air Force''s ability to project power in the 2020-2050 timeframe. The biggest cause for concern regarding F-35 acquisition is the uncertainty of the program, both in cost and war fighting capability. This paper will outline other facets of the F-35 the Lockheed Martin team has yet to prove as the program heads towards Initial Operational Capability (IOC) in 2018. Not only would acquiring the F-15SE help fill the fighter gap with a distinctive platform, but it would also help the USAF keep a medium-range fighter-bomber in the inventory to help fill the deep interdiction role while the USAF acquires, builds and fields the next-generation bomber."--Adapted from introduction.
