The Poisoned City

release date: Jul 10, 2018
The Poisoned City
Winner of The Hillman Prize for Book Journalism - 2019 When the people of Flint, Michigan, turned on their faucets in April 2014, the water pouring out was poisoned with lead and other toxins. Through a series of disastrous decisions, the state government had switched the city’s water supply to a source that corroded Flint’s aging lead pipes. Complaints about the foul-smelling water were dismissed: the residents of Flint, mostly poor and African American, were not seen as credible, even in matters of their own lives. It took eighteen months of activism by city residents and a band of dogged outsiders to force the state to admit that the water was poisonous. By that time, twelve people had died and Flint’s children had suffered irreparable harm. The long battle for accountability and a humane response to this man-made disaster has only just begun. In the first full account of this American tragedy, Anna Clark''s The Poisoned City recounts the gripping story of Flint’s poisoned water through the people who caused it, suffered from it, and exposed it. It is a chronicle of one town, but could also be about any American city, all made precarious by the neglect of infrastructure and the erosion of democratic decision making. Places like Flint are set up to fail—and for the people who live and work in them, the consequences can be fatal.

Scandal

release date: Jan 16, 2006
Scandal
Are sex scandals simply trivial distractions from serious issues or can they help democratize politics? In 1820, George IV''s "royal gambols" with his mistresses endangered the Old Oak of the constitution. When he tried to divorce Queen Caroline for adultery, the resulting scandal enabled activists to overcome state censorship and revitalize reform. Looking at six major British scandals between 1763 and 1820, this book demonstrates that scandals brought people into politics because they evoked familiar stories of sex and betrayal. In vibrant prose woven with vivid character sketches and illustrations, Anna Clark explains that activists used these stories to illustrate constitutional issues concerning the Crown, Parliament, and public opinion. Clark argues that sex scandals grew out of the tension between aristocratic patronage and efficiency in government. For instance, in 1809 Mary Ann Clarke testified that she took bribes to persuade her royal lover, the army''s commander-in-chief, to promote officers, buy government offices, and sway votes. Could women overcome scandals to participate in politics? This book also explains the real reason why the glamorous Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, became so controversial for campaigning in a 1784 election. Sex scandal also discredited Mary Wollstonecraft, one of the first feminists, after her death. Why do some scandals change politics while others fizzle? Edmund Burke tried to stir up scandal about the British empire in India, but his lurid, sexual language led many to think he was insane. A unique blend of the history of sexuality and women''s history with political and constitutional history, Scandal opens a revealing new window onto some of the greatest sex scandals of the past. In doing so, it allows us to more fully appreciate the sometimes shocking ways democracy has become what it is today.

Drawing on interviews with Australians from five communities around the country, she uncovers how we think about the past in the context of our local and intimate stories, and the role history plays in our lives.

History Wars

release date: May 31, 2013
History Wars
The nation''s history has probably never been more politicised than it is today. Politicians, journalists, columnists, academics and Australians from all walks of life argue passionately — and often, ideologically — about the significance of the national story: the cherished ideal of the ''fair go'', the much contested facts of Indigenous dispossession, the Anzac legend, and the nation''s strategic alliance with the United States. Historians have become both combatants and casualties in this war of words. In The History Wars, Stuart Macintyre and Anna Clark explore how this intense public debate has polarised the nation and paralysed history departments. This edition includes a new afterword by Stuart Macintyre which recounts, with rueful irony, the outbreak of controversy that followed the book''s original publication, and the further light it shed on the uses and abuses of Australian history.

The Struggle for the Breeches
"In its analysis of gender and class relations and their political forms, in giving voice to the many who have left only a fleeting trace in the historical record, Clark''s study is a pioneering classic. . . . It also has a salience for many of our present social and political dilemmas."—Leonore Davidoff, Editor, Gender and History "Deeply researched, scholarly, serious, important. This is a big book that develops a significant new line of inquiry on a classic story in modern history—the making of the English working class. Clark shows in great and persuasive detail how we might read this tale through the lens of gender."—Thomas Laqueur, author of Making Sex

The classroom has become the battleground of the ''history wars'', yet no-one ever asks the children what they think about Australian history and what they like--or don''t about learning it. Through interviews with around 250 Australian students from a wide variety of schools, Anna Clark asks how teachers and students teach and learn Australian history. This book is a lively and often surprising read that throws all kinds of challenges to students, teachers and indeed, politicians.

Desire

release date: Nov 12, 2012
Desire
‘... the rich range of historical information that Clark weaves into her chapters... makes this ambitious overview of sex in Europe a highly accessible and successful endeavour.’ – Times Higher Education Supplement ''Provides a valuable overview of the history of sexuality in Europe since classical antiquity, synthesising as it does a mass of studies of specific regions and periods which have appeared during the last two decades.'' Lesley Hall, Wellcome Library, UK Desire: A History of European Sexuality is a sweeping survey of sexuality in Europe from the Greeks to the present day. It traces two concepts of sexual desire that have competed in European history: desire as dangerous, polluting, and disorderly; and desire as creative, transcendent, even revolutionary. This book follows these changing attitudes toward sexuality through the major turning points of European history. Written in a lively and engaging style, the book contains many fascinating anecdotes drawing on a rich array of sources including poetry, novels, pornography and film as well as court records, autobiographies and personal letters. While Anna Clark builds on the work of dozens of historians, she also takes a fresh approach and introduces the concepts of twilight moments and sexual economies. Desire integrates the history of heterosexuality with same-sex desire, and focuses on the emotions of love as well as the passions of lust, the politics of sex as well as the personal experiences.

Making Australian History

release date: Jan 01, 2022
Making Australian History
Australian history has been revised and reinterpreted by successive generations of historians, writers, governments and public commentators, yet there has been no account of the ways it has changed, who makes history, and how. Making Australian History responds to this critical gap in Australian historical research.A few years ago Anna Clark saw a series of paintings on a sandstone cliff face in the Northern Territory. There were characteristic crosshatched images of fat barramundi and turtles, as well as sprayed handprints and several human figures with spears. Next to them was a long gun, painted with white ochre, an unmistakable image of the colonisers. Was this an Indigenous rendering of contact? A work of history? Each piece of history has a message and context that depends on who wrote it and when. Australian history has swirled and contorted over the years: the history wars have embroiled historians, politicians and public commentators alike, while debates over historical fiction have been as divisive. History isn''t just about understanding what happened and why. It also reflects the persuasions, politics and prejudices of its authors. Each iteration of Australia''s national story reveals not only the past in question, but also the guiding concerns and perceptions of each generation of history makers.Making Australian History is bold and inclusive: it catalogues and contextualises changing readings of the past, it examines the increasingly problematic role of historians as national storytellers, and it incorporates the stories of people.

Bringing her personal passion for throwing in a line, author Anna Clark celebrates the enduring pleasure of fishing in "The Catch: The Story of Fishing in Australia". This book charts the history of fishing, from the first known accounts of Indigenous fishing and early European encounters with Australia''s waters to the latest fishing fads; from the introduction of trout and fly fishing to the challenges of balancing needs of commercial and recreational fishers. Fishing personality Rob Paxevanos, host of "Fishing Australia", says that "The Catch" is ''by far my best fishing read to date''.

Deseo. Una historia de la sexualidad en Europa

release date: Jun 30, 2010
Deseo. Una historia de la sexualidad en Europa
«Deseo.

Alternative Histories of the Self

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Alternative Histories of the Self
"Alternative Histories of the Self investigates how people re-imagined the idea of the unique self in the period from 1762 to 1917. Some used the notion of the unique self to justify their gender and sexual transgression, but others rejected the notion of the unique self and instead demanded the sacrifice of the self for the good of society. The substantial introductory chapter places these themes in the cultural context of the long nineteenth century, but the book as a whole represents an alternative method for studying the self. Instead of focusing on the thoughts of great thinkers, this book explores how five unusual individuals twisted conventional ideas of the self as they interpreted their own lives. These subjects include: *The Chevalir/e d''Eon, a renegade diplomat who was outed as a woman *Anne Lister, who wrote coded diaries about her attraction to women *Richard Johnson, who secretly criticized the empire that he served *James Hinton, a Victorian doctor who publicly advocated philanthropy and privately supported polygamy *Edith Ellis, a socialist lesbian who celebrated the ''abnormal''. These five case studies are skilfully used to explore how the notion of the unique individual was used to make sense of sexual or gender non-conformity. Yet this queer reading will go beyond same-sex desire to analyse the issue of secrets and privacy; for instance, what stigma did men who practiced or advocated unconventional relationships with women incur? Finally, Clark ties these unusual lives to the wider questions of ethics and social justice: did those who questioned sexual conventions challenge political traditions as well?"--Bloomsbury Publishing

Whenever people get the opportunity to try the Mediterranean diet, they like the Mediterranean diet. Perhaps the best way that you can do to comprehend the Mediterranean diet better is to look at its diet pyramid. Through the pyramid, you will want to look at certain food things on it. Such food things are posted on the pyramid so that they occupy certain measures of room on them. The greater space they take, the more they are prescribed to be remembered for a person''s diet. When you look at the pyramid or certain plans of the Mediterranean diet, you will discover that more often than not, they are cooked with the utilization of olive oil rather than vegetable oil. Olive oil contains monounsaturated fats, which won''t raise the degrees of cholesterol in your blood. This is one reason why there is a low occurrence pace of coronary illness for the nations in the Mediterranean area contrasted with specific nations throughout the world. Products of the soil are also strongly suggested by the diet plan, which contains the fundamental nutrients and minerals to encourage improved real capacities. The Mediterranean diet is best perceived as a manual for great health. The diet doesn''t present another diet program that makes one cut on different food products. People who practice a Mediterranean diet devour fruits, vegetables, potatoes, grains, nuts, and bread in huge amounts with little to direct measures of yogurt, milk, cheddar, and wine consistently. The greater part of the food products is not handled to hold their health benefit. They like to have fresh mushrooms instead of tinned and canned products although those products are not difficult to eat, cook and serve. Growth Mindset Lessons Impact Reading Identities
As a teacher, we can help students understand who they are as a reader, but most importantly, foster an environment for students to develop a positive reading identity. A student with a positive reading identity is more likely to remain engaged in challenging texts, motivated to read for pleasure, persevere through reading tasks, and strive to achieve their goals. However, educators continually aspire to find ways to instruct and guide students into having the mindset that they can complete challenging tasks and practice difficult skills to become a better student and reader. In this investigation, I explored if growth mindset instruction, along with practice using the growth mindset tools, ideas and language can play a role in developing a student’s reading identity in a positive manner. The findings indicate that a student receiving growth mindset instruction impacted their reading identity and engagement in academic reading tasks.
