Making Australian History

release date: Jan 01, 2022
Making Australian History
Australian history has been revised and reinterpreted by successive generations of historians, writers, governments and public commentators, yet there has been no account of the ways it has changed, who makes history, and how. Making Australian History responds to this critical gap in Australian historical research.A few years ago Anna Clark saw a series of paintings on a sandstone cliff face in the Northern Territory. There were characteristic crosshatched images of fat barramundi and turtles, as well as sprayed handprints and several human figures with spears. Next to them was a long gun, painted with white ochre, an unmistakable image of the colonisers. Was this an Indigenous rendering of contact? A work of history? Each piece of history has a message and context that depends on who wrote it and when. Australian history has swirled and contorted over the years: the history wars have embroiled historians, politicians and public commentators alike, while debates over historical fiction have been as divisive. History isn''t just about understanding what happened and why. It also reflects the persuasions, politics and prejudices of its authors. Each iteration of Australia''s national story reveals not only the past in question, but also the guiding concerns and perceptions of each generation of history makers.Making Australian History is bold and inclusive: it catalogues and contextualises changing readings of the past, it examines the increasingly problematic role of historians as national storytellers, and it incorporates the stories of people.

Mediterranean Diet

Mediterranean Diet
55 % discount for bookstores ! Now At $24.99 instead of $ 38.73 $ Your customers will never stop reading this guide !!! Healthy living is a precious wealth that doesn''t come all alone. It must be arranged. Food plays a vital role in giving necessary nutrients to the development and advancement of the body. While a few food varieties are viewed as healthy and are needed in huge amounts, others might be excluded from an everyday diet. This is how a Mediterranean diet plan works. The Mediterranean diet is viewed as the most appropriate type of healthy diet. Specialists have shown that the mystery of healthy living of people in the Mediterranean region can be ascribed to their fair diet and dynamic lifestyle. Studies have also shown that this diet brings down chronic heart diseases as well as improves the future. There are not very many diet plans that get as broad appreciation as does the Mediterranean diet. Surely, as an issue of schedule, almost every person who has the chance to encounter the Mediterranean diet will hold the feasting plan in high respect. Whenever people get the opportunity to try the Mediterranean diet, they like the Mediterranean diet. Perhaps the best way that you can do to comprehend the Mediterranean diet better is to look at its diet pyramid. Through the pyramid, you will want to look at certain food things on it. Such food things are posted on the pyramid so that they occupy certain measures of room on them. The greater space they take, the more they are prescribed to be remembered for a person''s diet. When you look at the pyramid or certain plans of the Mediterranean diet, you will discover that more often than not, they are cooked with the utilization of olive oil rather than vegetable oil. Olive oil contains monounsaturated fats, which won''t raise the degrees of cholesterol in your blood. This is one reason why there is a low occurrence pace of coronary illness for the nations in the Mediterranean area contrasted with specific nations throughout the world. Products of the soil are also strongly suggested by the diet plan, which contains the fundamental nutrients and minerals to encourage improved real capacities. The Mediterranean diet is best perceived as a manual for great health. The diet doesn''t present another diet program that makes one cut on different food products. People who practice a Mediterranean diet devour fruits, vegetables, potatoes, grains, nuts, and bread in huge amounts with little to direct measures of yogurt, milk, cheddar, and wine consistently. The greater part of the food products is not handled to hold their health benefit. They like to have fresh mushrooms instead of tinned and canned products although those products are not difficult to eat, cook and serve. The Mediterranean diet includes avoiding food varieties like bundled desserts and chips which are profoundly prepared food. Likewise, on the list of food varieties to keep away from is any fried fruit that has significant degrees of immersed fats. When entire, regular food varieties are chosen, people who are on the Mediterranean diet will see expanded heart just as general wellbeing. Growth Mindset Lessons Impact Reading Identities

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Growth Mindset Lessons Impact Reading Identities
As a teacher, we can help students understand who they are as a reader, but most importantly, foster an environment for students to develop a positive reading identity. A student with a positive reading identity is more likely to remain engaged in challenging texts, motivated to read for pleasure, persevere through reading tasks, and strive to achieve their goals. However, educators continually aspire to find ways to instruct and guide students into having the mindset that they can complete challenging tasks and practice difficult skills to become a better student and reader. In this investigation, I explored if growth mindset instruction, along with practice using the growth mindset tools, ideas and language can play a role in developing a student’s reading identity in a positive manner. The findings indicate that a student receiving growth mindset instruction impacted their reading identity and engagement in academic reading tasks.

As Ral struggles to keep Oren and Syris alive, the secrets surrounding them threaten to pull their fragile bond apart. Events reveal both the lies and truths that have defined the boys’ lives, and they find themselves questioning their own realities. The Poisoned City

release date: Jul 10, 2018
The Poisoned City
Winner of The Hillman Prize for Book Journalism - 2019 When the people of Flint, Michigan, turned on their faucets in April 2014, the water pouring out was poisoned with lead and other toxins. Through a series of disastrous decisions, the state government had switched the city’s water supply to a source that corroded Flint’s aging lead pipes. Complaints about the foul-smelling water were dismissed: the residents of Flint, mostly poor and African American, were not seen as credible, even in matters of their own lives. It took eighteen months of activism by city residents and a band of dogged outsiders to force the state to admit that the water was poisonous. By that time, twelve people had died and Flint’s children had suffered irreparable harm. The long battle for accountability and a humane response to this man-made disaster has only just begun. In the first full account of this American tragedy, Anna Clark''s The Poisoned City recounts the gripping story of Flint’s poisoned water through the people who caused it, suffered from it, and exposed it. It is a chronicle of one town, but could also be about any American city, all made precarious by the neglect of infrastructure and the erosion of democratic decision making. Places like Flint are set up to fail—and for the people who live and work in them, the consequences can be fatal.

Defining the Role of Hypoxia and HIFs in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Defining the Role of Hypoxia and HIFs in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells
Vascular diseases are major causes of morbidity and mortality. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), as integral constituents of the vascular wall, provide structural support and dynamically alter vessel shape and structure in response to environmental stimuli. While the role of their endothelial neighbors has been extensively examined in facilitation of ischemic responses and vascular remodeling, less is known about VSMCs. Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) are master regulators of cellular responses to O2 tension. These heterodimeric transcription factors drive endothelial vascularization and are putative regulators of VSMC driven vascular remodeling in pulmonary artery hypertension. The studies presented in this dissertation examine the role of canonical HIF activity in modulating VSMC phenotype, vasoreactivity, and responses to peripheral ischemia. Mice with smooth muscle specific deletion of aryl hydrocarbon receptor nuclear translocator (ARNT; HIF-1ß) (ArntSMKO), required for HIF transcriptional activity, feature impaired peripheral perfusion recovery following femoral artery ligation. Vessels from ArntSMKO mice display altered vasomotor function, increased hypoxic microvascular permeability, and disrupted arteriolar VSMC morphology. Aberrant behavior and transcriptional profile in isolated ArntSMKO VSMCs indicate phenotypic switching. Collectively, the data support a role for ARNT regulating VSMC phenotype, essential for vasoreactivity and perfusion recovery in peripheral ischemia. As such, ARNT provides a therapeutic target for modulating VSMC phenotypic change, a feature of many vascular diseases.

The Catch

release date: Oct 01, 2017
The Catch
In every coastal town in Australia, there''s a bait shop and a boat ramp, and, in garages around the country, fishing rods are strung up waiting for their next outing. Many of us have a special fishing spot, and families pass on tips from generation to generation and exchange fishy tales of amazing catches and near misses. Bringing her personal passion for throwing in a line, author Anna Clark celebrates the enduring pleasure of fishing in "The Catch: The Story of Fishing in Australia". This book charts the history of fishing, from the first known accounts of Indigenous fishing and early European encounters with Australia''s waters to the latest fishing fads; from the introduction of trout and fly fishing to the challenges of balancing needs of commercial and recreational fishers. Fishing personality Rob Paxevanos, host of "Fishing Australia", says that "The Catch" is ''by far my best fishing read to date''.

Transnationalism, Nationalism and Australian History

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Transnationalism, Nationalism and Australian History
In recent years History''s ‘national narrative’ has been powerfully challenged by transnational and international debates. Using Australian history as a case study, this collection draws on leading contributions from academics and public intellectuals to explore the ways national identities still resonate in historical scholarship and reexamines key moments in Australian history, with a transnational lens, raising important questions about the unique context of Australia’s national narrative. The book examines the tension between national and transnational perspectives, attempting to internationalise the often parochial nation-based narratives that characterise national history, such as the history wars or the glorification of the Anzac Legend, whilst bearing in mind the limits of transnational histories in a national setting. Moving from the local and personal to the global, encompassing comparative and international research and drawing on the experiences of researchers working across nations and communities, this collection brings together diverging national and transnational approaches and asks several critical research questions: What is transnational history? How do new transnational readings of the past challenge conventional national narratives and approaches? What are implications of transnational and international approaches on Australian history? What possibilities do they bring to the discipline? What are their limitations? And finally, how do we understand the nation in this transnational moment?

Going Deep for Lionfish

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Going Deep for Lionfish
"Over the last three decades, lionfish populations have exploded throughout the western Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico. Their high abundances and gluttonous appetites threaten not only ecosystems like coral reefs, but also important nursery areas, and deep habitats hundreds of feet below diving depths. In some shallow water dive sites, spearfishing has proven an effective way to control populations. For those locations, sustained removals may limit the impacts these fish on the invaded ecosystems. Numerous novel devices and approaches to harvest lionfish from water depths beyond recreational scuba limits have been considered, but none have yet proven successful. Developing an effective method to target lionfish from these and other remote locations is important. Recent studies have reported the negative effects of lionfish on important prey species of both recreationally and commercially important species in deep water. There may also be trap applications in some shallow water locations, like nurseries, where lionfish control would protect the juveniles of some valuable fished species, and other ecologically important species"--Page 1.
