Puritan Preachers

release date: Jan 09, 2025
Puritan Preachers
Theologically speaking, I am not aware of anything that I have inherited from my Puritan ancestors. But I cannot deny the genetic relationship. Nor can I deny the influence that they had in their day, both in New England and Old England, or the fascination of one of the most eventful periods in English history. This book, then, is an attempt to understand them better. It is a story that begins in Wapping, then moves to North Britain, crosses over to America, and back to England again, ending in Hertfordshire, where I was born.

The Kinghams

release date: Dec 18, 2024
The Kinghams
Quakers have made an appearance several times in the course of my genealogical quest, but only among more or less distant cousins, up to now. Their stoic perseverance in the face of official persecution has always impressed me, so I am proud to present a Quaker who is my direct ancestor. Jonathan Kingham, born in 1620, is my 7th great grandfather. He was a Quaker and a miller in the parish of Wooburn, Buckinghamshire, where a river called the Wye flows into the Thames. This book looks at his origins, his life, and the world he lived in.

Mariette

release date: Nov 21, 2024
Mariette
The Huguenot Mariette family, which came to London from the Orléans region of France, had an important impact on the Powell branch of my ancestors, through marriage, inheritance and business interests, so I feel justified in presenting their history, which is an interesting one in its own right, as a consequential aspect of my own heritage. An Appendix is included that tells the story of Major Charles Jones, a relation of the Mariettes, who was a key figure in the Sellis scandal, which rocked England in 1810. His evidence, which only came to light in 1970, implicates the Duke of Cumberland, an uncle of Queen Victoria, in the murder of his own valet, Joseph Sellis.

Morocco close

release date: Oct 23, 2024
Morocco close
Occasionally, in the course of tracing family history, a specific place or event can take hold in the imagination. In my case, this happened with an ancient tenement in Edinburgh''s Canongate, which carries the fanciful name of Morocco Close. That is where my great grandmother Agnes Reid was born and spent the first years of her childhood. It is also where her father died in 1839. My purpose, in these pages, is to draw the threads that lead to and from Morocco Close, breathe some life into its late Georgian and early Victorian inhabitants, and bring some order into a very tangled web.

Cranna

release date: Oct 10, 2024
Cranna
Irish parishes are generally subdivided into townlands which, in rural areas, may be home to anything from one to thirty families. This particular townland lies in the south-eastern corner of County Tipperary and my intention is to trace its history and the lives of its inhabitants, while paying special attention to my forebears, who lived in Cranna.

Someone Has To Be The Most Expensive, Why Not Make It You?

release date: Oct 09, 2020
Someone Has To Be The Most Expensive, Why Not Make It You?
One of the greatest challenges facing business owners globally is that they simply don''t charge enough for what they do. And this leads to all kinds of nasty problems. There has never been a better time to put an end to this self-destructive business practice once and for all. Someone Has To Be The Most Expensive, Why Not Make It You? is the culmination of Andrew Griffiths'' thirty-five-year entrepreneurial journey. This has seen him travel the world as an author, speaker and commentator, working with business owners in every corner of the planet to help them create enterprises of substance and significance. If you''re sick of not charging enough for what you do, of not having any money in the bank, of feeling the exhaustion of working incredibly hard but not getting where you want to go, then this is, without a doubt, the book you need to read - now. Written specifically for business owners, this book has a number of very clear outcomes: putting an end to the business owner struggle challenging your thinking about what you charge showing why being the cheapest is - without a doubt - the worst business strategy ever explaining why there has never been a better time to charge what you''re worth ideally, giving you the courage to become the best and most expensive at what you do. This is a concept that works, regardless of the economic conditions, the industry you may be in or your geographic location. Someone has to be the most expensive, why not make it you? But if you''re going to be most expensive, you have to be the best. It really is as simple and as complicated as that.

The Birth of the Samurai

release date: Jul 17, 2019
The Birth of the Samurai
This brief but comprehensive history looks at the emergence and development of a warrior elite in Japanese culture prior to the rule of the samurai. As the country moved from a hunter-gatherer society to a mainly agricultural one, fighting warrior bands formed to protect the new settlements and farmlands. As these grew over time, powerful clans would emerge and through political wrangling, open rebellion and outright war, the country would see numerous shifts of power. Local chieftains became subjects of an all-powerful Imperial Family, who in turn saw their influence gradually decline in favour of leading courtiers. Meanwhile, provincial warrior clans honed their skills on the battlefield and gradually increased their holdings until by the latter half of the twelfth century, the Minamoto Clan were able to seize control of the country for themselves and usher in the age of the samurai.

The Use of Eco-Innovation to Address Labor Conflict

release date: Jan 01, 2016
The Use of Eco-Innovation to Address Labor Conflict
The characteristics of successful small wins approaches are understood; however, we know little about the causes and implications of small wins failure. We examine the causes and implications of failure and success of small wins approaches in six firms in the Australian meat processing industry as they sought to improve environmental management practices and address labor conflict. The approach failed in three cases and succeeded in three, and we use these case studies to develop a theoretical process model showing the inner workings of and explaining differences between failed and successful small wins approaches. Failing firms we studied challenge the assumption that small wins approaches are low risk, as “small flops” led to the ultimate demise of the program in each case, while successful firms we observed showed how, once mastered, a small wins approach can be leveraged to address other seemingly intractable issues.

Pre-Hospital Anesthesia Handbook

release date: Dec 11, 2015
Pre-Hospital Anesthesia Handbook
This second edition handbook details new and improved procedures, current drugs and updated algorithms used by the crews of the Great North Air Ambulance who have been providing this life saving intervention since 2004. It will be of interest to pre-hospital care doctors and trainees, especially those studying for the GNAAS course. Pre-Hospital Anaesthesia is one of the most demanding interventions that can be made in the field. The exact incidence of failed intubation is difficult to quantify, but it is clear that it is higher than in hospital. Equally it is certain that anyone undertaking it should have clear instruction in the technique and a thorough understanding of all it entails.
