This book provides insights into the wetting behavior on fiber-dressed surfaces and guidelines for developing superhydrophobicity based on electrospinning. In developing superhydrophobicity, electrospinning possesses the following advantages over other fabrication techniques. First, the electrospun micro- and nanofibers, which may also featured with secondary fiber morphology, provide sufficient surface roughness for superhydrophobicity. Second, electrospinning is considered an additive manufacturing technique, so the surfaces to be modified are not destroyed for superhydrophobicity. Third, the introduced electrospun structure is featured with high porosity with inter-fiber pores, allowing for a high vapor transmission rate, which is necessary in many applications such as wound dressing, gas sensor.However, books focused on developing superhydrophobicity using electrospinning are rarely found. Electrospinning is only introduced as one section in most superhydrophobicity-related books, and the mechanism of superhydrophobicity by different electrospinning-based methods lacks detailed explanation.

This book presents recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) imaging and display frameworks, encompassing three categories of 3D imaging and display technologies. The first category is nonphotorealistic 3D approaches based on conventional optical cameras to implement 3D stereoscopic observation of a scene. In the context of nonphotorealistic 3D imaging and reconstruction systems, the authors introduce general principles and also demonstrate camera calibration for 3D imaging, smart cameras, and full-link imaging methods using the optical modulation transfer function to improve imaging quality in conventional cameras. The second category is based on light-ray light field technology to achieve photorealistic 3D imaging and displays. In the context of light-ray light field systems, two approaches capable of light-ray light field 3D imaging by utilizing a camera array or a lens array are demonstrated. Accordingly, light-ray light field display approaches comprising head-mounted displays and integral displays are also introduced. The third category is also photorealistic 3D imaging and display technology, which is based on holography (i.e., diffraction or wavefront light field). In the corresponding holographic displays, the authors introduce 3D holographic displays from three elements: algorithms, devices, and systems, involving fast hologram generation algorithms, wide-viewing-angle display systems, and metasurface holography, etc. Including an investigative roadmap for future progress in optical imaging and 3D display systems, this book is essential reading for scientists and engineers in academia and industry who are interested in next-generation imaging and display concepts for 3D visual sensing systems.

Lithium-ion battery (LIB) related companies can employ blockchain to record data used to assess the health status of LIBs and thus recycle decommissioned LIBs in an environmentally friendly and economic manner. However, whether blockchain adoption is helpful for the environment and company profitability remains controversial. To this end, we consider a dual-channel closed-loop supply chain consisting of a LIB supplier (LS), an outsourced-mode EV manufacturer (OM), and an integrated-mode EV manufacturer (IM), and analyze how blockchain adoption affects equilibrium decisions, and whether IM and LS should adopt blockchain for LIB production and recycling from the perspective of environmental impact and company profitability. First, we show that brand preference, the effect of blockchain operational cost disadvantage, and the effect of echelon utilization benefit advantage are the main factors affecting the equilibrium decisions. Second, we show that blockchain adoption is viable to mitigate the environmental impact of LIB production and recycling, provided that the energy savings from the echelon utilization method exceed a certain value. Third, we show that neither IM nor LS will adopt blockchain in the immature stage of blockchain technology, that IM will adopt blockchain but LS will not in the moderately mature stage of blockchain technology, and that both IM and LS will adopt blockchain in the mature stage of blockchain technology.

In China, talent development has been one of the key areas of attention in national focus for the development of science and technology, education, and other areas over the past three decades, and it is especially emphasized in the national outline for medium- and long-term educational reform and development. In Dreadful Desires Charlie Yi Zhang examines how the Chinese state deploys affective notions of love to regulate the population and secure China’s place in the global economy. Zhang shows how the state frames love as a set of desires that encompass heteronormative intimacy, familial and communal attachment, upward mobility, and private property ownership. These desires—as circulated in performance in the nationalistic ceremony, same-sex romantic fan fiction, the wildly popular reality television dating show If You Are the One, and the cult of patriarchal personality around Xi Jinping—are explicitly based in oppressive systems of gender, class, and sexuality. Zhang contends that such desires connect love to economic survival and gender normativity in ways that underwrite Chinese neoliberalism at the expense of individual flourishing. By outlining how state-framed forms of love create desires that cannot be fulfilled, Zhang places China at the forefront of using affective attachments to nation, leader, and family in the global shifts toward exploitation and authoritarianism.

We introduce a stylised model where a risk-averse foreign investor teaming up with a local partner is concerned about background political risk affecting public goods provision (permits, etc.) by a local government. We show that the risk-averse principal as a residual claimant leaves a larger share of revenues to the local partner to indirectly lock-in local government commitment to the joint venture. We bring this trade-off to the data and show that uncertainty regarding the local political situation affects the average revenue sharing agreements between foreign investors and local partners in international joint ventures for Chinese firms with foreign investments.

Domestic institutions can be a source of comparative advantage. This paper examines the role of Confucian clan culture, a long-standing institution at the heart of Chinese society, in firm exports. Using a nationally representative survey on private enterprises in China, we find that firms located in counties with historically stronger clan culture are more likely to engage in export activity and export a larger volume. There is also evidence that local clan density has a significant impact on the choice of export mode. Employing the mechanism analysis and excluding alternative explanations, we find that clans promote firm exports mainly through its role as an internal financial market in alleviating financial constraints facing firms. Further analysis shows that this promotion effect is larger when market supporting institutions are less developed, suggesting that clan culture may act as a substitute for formal institutions.

Perception of human beings has evolved from natural biosensor to powerful sensors and sensor networks. In sensor networks, trillions of devices are interconnected and sense a broad spectrum of contexts for human beings, laying the foundation of Internet of Things (IoT). However, sensor technologies have several limitations relating to deployment cost and usability, which render them unacceptable for practical use. Consequently, the pursuit of convenience in human perception necessitates a wireless, sensorless and contactless sensing paradigm. Recent decades have witnessed rapid developments in wireless sensing technologies, in which sensors detect wireless signals (such as acoustic, light, and radio frequency) originally designed for data transmission or lighting. By analyzing the signal measurements on the receiver end, channel characteristics can be obtained to convey the sensing results. Currently, significant effort is being devoted to employing the ambient Wi-Fi, RFID, Bluetooth, ZigBee, and television signals for smart wireless sensing, eliminating the need for dedicated sensors and promoting the prospect of the Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT). This book provides a comprehensive and in-depth discussion of wireless sensing technologies. Specifically, with a particular focus on Wi-Fi-based sensing for understanding human behavior, it adopts a top-down approach to introduce three key topics: human detection, localization, and activity recognition. Previous assessments of nominal exchange rate determination, following Meese and Rogoff (1983) have focused upon a narrow set of models. Cheung et al. (2005) augmented the usual suspects with productivity based models, and "behavioral equilibrium exchange rate" models, and assessed performance at horizons of up to 5 years. In this paper, we further expand the set of models to include Taylor rule fundamentals, yield curve factors, and incorporate shadow rates and risk and liquidity factors. The performance of these models is compared against the random walk benchmark. The models are estimated in error correction and first-difference specifications. We examine model performance at various forecast horizons (1 quarter, 4 quarters, 20 quarters) using differing metrics (mean squared error, direction of change), as well as the "consistency" test of Cheung and Chinn (1998). No model consistently outperforms a random walk, by a mean squared error measure, although purchasing power parity does fairly well. Moreover, along a direction-of-change dimension, certain structural models do outperform a random walk with statistical significance. While one finds that these forecasts are cointegrated with the actual values of exchange rates, in most cases, the elasticity of the forecasts with respect to the actual values is different from unity. Overall, model/specification/currency combinations that work well in one period will not necessarily work well in another period.

Hatchability is an important trait for the chicken industry because of its high impact on chicken output. The embryonic survival ability in fertile eggs is greatly influenced by the offspring genotype and the quality of the egg environment, especially egg yolk metabolites. Relying upon a standard New Keynesian DSGE, the authors propose an explanation for two empirical findings in the international finance literature. First, the unbiasedness hypothesis - the proposition that expost exchange rate depreciation matches interest differentials - is rejected much more strongly at short horizons than at long. Second, even at long horizons, the unbiasedness hypothesis tends to be rejected when one of the currencies has experienced a long period of low interest rates, such as in Japan and Switzerland. Using a calibrated New Keynesian dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model, the authors show how a monetary policy rule can induce the negative (positive) correlation between depreciation and interest differentials at short (long) horizons. The tendency to reject unbiasedness for Japan and Switzerland even at long horizons they attribute to the interaction of the monetary reaction function and the zero lower bound.

Zirconia (ZrO2) is an important ceramic material with a broad range of applications. Due to its high melting temperature, low thermal conductivity, and high-temperature stability, zirconia based ceramics have been widely used for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). When TBC is exposed to thermal cycling during real applications, the TBC may fail due to several mechanisms: (1) phase transformation into yttrium-rich and yttrium-depleted regions, When the yttrium-rich region produces pure zirconia domains that transform between monoclinic and tetragonal phases upon thermal cycling; and (2) cracking of the coating due to stress induced by erosion. The mechanism of erosion involves gross plastic damage within the TBC, often leading to ceramic loss and/or cracks down to the bond coat. The damage mechanisms are related to service parameters, including TBC material properties, temperature, velocity, particle size, and impact angle. The goal of this thesis is to understand the structural and mechanical properties of the thermal barrier coating material, thus increasing the service lifetime of gas turbine engines. To this end, it is critical to study the fundamental properties and potential failure mechanisms of zirconia. This thesis is focused on investigating the structural and mechanical properties of zirconia. There are mainly two parts studied in this paper, (1) ab initio calculations of thermodynamic properties of both monoclinic and tetragonal phase zirconia, and monoclinic-to-tetragonal phase transformation, and (2) image-based finite element simulation of the indentation process of yttria-stabilized zirconia. In the first part of this study, the structural properties, including lattice parameter, band structure, density of state, as well as elastic constants for both monoclinic and tetragonal zirconia have been computed. The pressure-dependent phase transition between tetragonal (t-ZrO2) and cubic zirconia (c-ZrO2) has been calculated using the density function theory (DFT) method. Phase transformation is defined by the band structure and tetragonal distortion changes. The results predict a transition from a monoclinic structure to a fluorite-type cubic structure at the pressure of 37 GPa. Thermodynamic property calculations of monoclinic zirconia (m-ZrO2) were also carried out. Temperature-dependent heat capacity, entropy, free energy, Debye temperature of monoclinic zirconia, from 0 to 1000 K, were computed, and they compared well with those reported in the literature. Moreover, the atomistic simulations correctly predicted the phase transitions of m-ZrO2 under compressive pressures ranging from 0 to 70 GPa. The phase transition pressures of monoclinic to orthorhombic I (3 GPa), orthorhombic I to orthorhombic II (8 GPa), orthorhombic II to tetragonal (37 GPa), and stable tetragonal phases (37-60 GPa) are in excellent agreement with experimental data. In the second part of this study, the mechanical response of yttria-stabilized zirconia under Rockwell superficial indentation was studied. The microstructure image based finite element method was used to validate the model using a composite cermet material. Then, the finite element model of Rockwell indentation of yttria-stabilized zirconia was developed, and the result was compared with experimental hardness data.

In this study, a coupled potential flow-viscous flow model is used for numerical wave tank simulation. The solver satisfies all the requirements for such a simulation environment. The coupling scheme is based on a non-overlapping heterogeneous domain decomposition method. In this method, the flow domain consists of two subdomains. In the potential flow subdomain, a boundary element method(BEM) is used to solve Laplace's equation, while in the viscous flow subdomain, a finite element method (FEM) is used to solve the Navier-Stokes equations(NSE). At the interface, velocity and pressure are used for matching conditions. Techniques for data transfer and local free surface reconstruction are also introduced. The same coupling scheme is further extended to incorporate the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations by including an inner loop that solves, for instance, k-epsilon modeling equations and updates the eddy viscosity. The implementation based on staggered iteration method is validated using previous experiment and numerical data, for both 2D and 3D wave impact, wave--structure interaction, and wave breaking problems.

The multivariate regular variation (MRV) is one of the most important tools in modelling multivariate heavy-tailed phenomena. This paper characterizes the MRV distribution through the upper tail dependence index of the copula associated with them. Along with Theorem 2.3 in Li and Sun (2009), our results imply that the existence of the upper tail dependence index of the copula is necessary and sufficient for a random vector with regularly varying univariate marginals to have a MRV tail. Moreover, the limit measure of the MRV tail can be explicitly characterized by the tail dependence index. Our analysis is also extended to two more general multivariate heavy-tailed distributions, including the Subexponential and the Long-tailed distribution families.
