Hikaru Shindo, a pretty normal Japanese sixth-grader, finds an old, bloodstained Go board in his grandfather''s attic, and soon he discovers that Fujiwara-no-Sai, the ghost of an ancient Go master, is trapped inside the board, but when Sai becomes a part of Hikaru''s consciousness, together they make an unstoppable Go-playing team.

After stumbling across a haunted go board, Hikaru Shindo discovers that the spirit of a master player named Fujiwara-no-Sai has taken up residence in his consciousness. Sai awakens in Hikaru an untapped genius for the game, and soon the schoolboy is chasing his own dream--defeating the famed go prodigy Akira Toya! Hikaru faces the preliminary rounds of the pro test, during which he must eliminate not only his classmates at the insei school but also any outsiders who want to take the test. One of them in particular appears to know how to exploit Hikaru''s weaknesses, and poor Hikaru seems powerless to stop him.

Comme Akira est qualifié d''office, les deux autres places seront attribuées aux vainqueurs des duels : Hiraku / Yashiro et Ochi / Waya Pourtant, les éliminatoires réserveront un dénouement inattendu ! Les membres des équipes chinoise et coréenne ont aussi été désignés Les trois pays sont déjà prêts à combattre !!

Le rêve d''Akira se réalise enfin. Pour la troisième fois, il va pouvoir se mesurer à Hikaru face au goban. Hikaru, qui a gagné sa partie de justesse à la première ronde, décide finalement de confier à Saï la partie avec Akira...
