The Elements of Style

release date: Sep 28, 2020
The Elements of Style
This book aims to give in brief space the principal requirements of plain English style. It aims to lighten the task of instructor and student by concentrating attention (in Chapters II and III) on a few essentials, the rules of usage and principles of composition most commonly violated. In accordance with this plan it lays down three rules for the use of the comma, instead of a score or more, and one for the use of the semicolon, in the belief that these four rules provide for all the internal punctuation that is required by nineteen sentences out of twenty. Similarly, it gives in Chapter III only those principles of the paragraph and the sentence which are of the widest application. The book thus covers only a small portion of the field of English style. The experience of its writer has been that once past the essentials, students profit most by individual instruction based on the problems of their own work, and that each instructor has his own body of theory, which he may prefer to that offered by any textbook. The numbers of the sections may be used as references in correcting manuscript. The writer''s colleagues in the Department of English in Cornell University have greatly helped him in the preparation of his manuscript. Mr. George McLane Wood has kindly consented to the inclusion under Rule 10 of some material from his Suggestions to s. The following books are recommended for reference or further study: in connection with Chapters II and IV, F. Howard Collins, and Printer (Henry Frowde); Chicago University Press, Manual of Style; T. L. De Vinne, Correct Composition (The Century Company); Horace Hart, Rules for Compositors and Printers (Oxford University Press); George McLane Wood, Extracts from the Style-Book of the Government Printing Office (United States Geological Survey); in connection with Chapters III and V, The King''s English (Oxford University Press); Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, The Art of Writing (Putnam), especially the chapter, Interlude on Jargon; George McLane Wood, Suggestions to s (United States Geological Survey); John Lesslie Hall, English Usage (Scott, Foresman and Co.); James P. Kelley, Workmanship in Words (Little, Brown and Co.). In these will be found full discussions of many points here briefly treated and an abundant store of illustrations to supplement those given in this book.

The Elements of Style (Annotated)
Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The purpose of realizing this historical context is to approach the understanding of a historical epoch from the elements provided by the text. Hence the importance of placing the document in context. It is necessary to unravel what its author or authors have said, how it has been said, when, why and where, always relating it to its historical moment.Dorothy Parker once wrote: "If you have young friends who aspire to become writers, the second biggest favor you can do is present them with copies of The Elements of Style. The first, of course, is to shoot them now, while they are happy. "Many Americans, who believe they can be taught to write, will turn to The Elements of Style as the indispensable road map through a desert without traces of rotating words. From the Great War to the Cold War, this little book, was only the attempt of a university professor to reduce "the great tangle of custom-made English rhetoric and write its rules and principles at the tip of a pin."Those are the words of EB White, who, after having been taught English at Cornell University by Professor William Strunk Jr, was commissioned in 1957 by Macmillan editors to review Strunk''s printed style book on style for General reader and the university market.

The Elements of Style Workbook

The Elements of Style Workbook
The Elements of Style Workbook honors the original masterpiece by William Strunk, Jr. published in 1920, with relevant updates for modern times. We have adapted Strunk''s original work to include essential exercises (with answer keys) to help novice writers gain command of stylistic structures and devices through guided practice, and to guide more experienced writers through the nuances of commanding style. Essential for today''s writers, Strunk''s original chapters regarding rules of usage and principles of composition are represented in this workbook. These original lessons, along with style exercises that teach writers to flex their writing style at will, include sentence writing, paragraph writing, and style writing exercises that amplify the impact of the original work by William Strunk, Jr. True to Strunk''s original masterpiece, this Elements of Style Workbook addresses the most common and useful issues novice writers face, which are the same ones plaguing English writers for over a century. We honor Strunk''s identification of these main writing challenges, and do not dilute the prominence of these points with either less difficult or more advanced grammatical lessons. In this way, we retain Strunk''s original focus on the essentials. We have reproduced these essential lessons here and provided targeted practice to enable writers to strengthen those skills. While holding true to the original Elements of Style , this workbook also amplifies some troublesome yet vital stylistic points of practice with the following augmentations: -Grammar on past perfect -Expansive style section based on Noah Webster''s style types -Extensive practice with the multitude of styles Webster delineates, using excerpts from literature masters as examples and guides None of these highly useful components were present in the original Elements of Style, nor have they been represented in any edition since then. Style Types The style section draws from Noah Webster''s articulate delineations of style types. Each style type draws from a master of literature illustrating that particular style, then challenges writers to imitate, recreate, and alter styles at will. The following style types, identified by Webster, are included in this workbook: 1.Forceful 2.Vehement 3.Elegant 4.Brief 5.Copious or diffusive 6.Precise 7.Neat 8.Loose 9.Feeble 10.Plain Together, these style types represent the vast majority of writing styles used by literary masters in the English language. An English writing workbook like no other With its loyalty to the highly acclaimed and extremely successful original edition of Strunk''s The Elements of Style , augmented by Webster''s clearly defined articulation of style types and supplemented by ample, targeted, and clear exercises for each component, The Elements of Style Workbook offers an essential writing resource like no other. Whether you are beginning your journey to quality writing or would like to refine your command of voice and style, you will find this updated version of a tried-and-true resource, The Elements of Style Workbook , a vital aid and guide.

The Elements of Style. If You Want to Write. Illustrated
For anyone who desires to become an author, two classic books share the necessary elements of creative writing and the habits and processes to make your writing successful. Professor William Strunk published Elements of Style at the end of the First World War. This book inspires us to write well while immersing readers in the atmosphere of a gentlemen’s writing circle where we can almost smell the chalk and tweed. The professor encourages the writer to write well, if for no other reason than to escape his stern reprimand. If You Want to Write is Brenda Ueland’s classic exploration of the essence and art of literary creativity. She believed that only by expressing one’s creative spirit can we become "generous, joyful, lively, bold and sympathetic". William Strunk: The Elements of Style Brenda Ueland: If You Want to Write
