Marsden Hartley

release date: Jan 01, 2020
Marsden Hartley
"Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) was proud to call himself an American artist, but he dreamed of travel to Europe, believing that he would learn more there than in his home state of Maine or even New York. His rise to prominence as a specifically American modernist was based largely on the visual influences that he encountered in 1912-15 in the vibrant cities of Paris, Berlin, and Munich, which he then synthesized through a New England perspective. Solitary by nature, Hartley never lost his wanderlust, and throughout his life found inspiration in many other landscapes and cultures. Marsden Hartley: Adventurer in the Arts provides a fresh appraisal of this pioneering modernist, whose work continues to be celebrated for its spirituality and experimentation. Insightful essays explore the manifold ways in which Hartley''s peripatetic life shaped his artistic vision, while detailed studies of works he created in places as diverse as Provence, Nova Scotia, and Mexico are accompanied by personal photographs, postcards, and images of some of the possessions he gathered on his travels. Also included are reproductions of a photograph album that Hartley compiled, a "Color Exercises" notebook, and his typescript "Elephants and Rhinestones: A Book of the Circus"."--

Nectar from Heaven

release date: Nov 22, 2018
Nectar from Heaven
Albert Low used the stories and inspirational pieces in this collection during talks that he gave over many years spent as a Zen teacher. Each story has a point to make that would be difficult to spell out in specific detail, but which has the potential to change the way we see the world. Stories and inspirational texts have always been used in this way. To see what he means, one only has to think of the parables of Jesus, the fables of Lafontaine and Aesop, the stories about the exploits of Mullah Nassr Eddin, the stories of Jalaluddin Rumi, and the famous Mahabharata of which the Bhagavad Gita forms a part.

Old Penn Station
A beautiful tribute to the glory of the original Pennsylvania Railroad Station During the first half of the 20th century, the original Pennsylvania Station was one of New York City''s grandest landmarks, a palace in the middle of Manhattan. William Low''s glorious illustrations pay close attention to detail while still encompassing the large-scale grandeur of Penn Station. Old Penn Station follows a very specific piece of New York City history, but it''s not just a New York book. The author''s research carefully addresses the whole history of the building, from construction to destruction, ending with an acknowledgment of its lasting legacy in terms of historical preservation. Spaces can be powerful, and Old Penn Station honors one particular powerful space which is sure to engender discussion about other historical buildings and monuments all across the nation. This is a classic, beautiful book for history lovers, train lovers, and art lovers alike. Old Penn Station is a 2007 New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year and a 2008 Bank Street - Best Children''s Book of the Year.
