The Hair of Harold Roux

release date: Jun 07, 2011
The Hair of Harold Roux
In 1975 the National Book Award Fiction Prize was awarded to two writers: Robert Stone and Thomas Williams. Yet only Stone''s Dog Soldiers is still remembered today. That oversight is startling when considering the literary impact of The Hair of Harold Roux. A dazzlingly crafted novel-within-a-novel hailed as a masterpiece, it deserves a new generation of readers. In The Hair of Harold Roux, we are introduced to Aaron Benham: college professor, writer, husband, and father. Aaron-when he can focus-is at work on a novel, The Hair of Harold Roux, a thinly disguised autobiographical account of his college days. In Aaron''s novel, his alter ego, Allard Benson, courts a young woman, despite the efforts of his rival, the earnest and balding Harold Roux-a GI recently returned from World War II with an unfortunate hairpiece. What unfolds through Aaron''s mind, his past and present, and his nested narratives is a fascinating exploration of sex and friendship, responsibility and regret, youth and middle age, and the essential fictions that see us through. "Williams''s novel is terrific: it is sweet, funny and sexy ... Williams is an accomplished magician."-Newsweek "Everywhere the language flows from the purest vernacular to the elevations demanded by distilled perception. Our largest sympathies are roused, tormented and consoled."-Washington Post Book World "A wonderfully old-fashioned writer ... that dinosaur among contemporary writers of fiction, an actual storyteller."-John Irving

Iran had developed high powered microwave weapon that would kill all living things exposed to the blast but would only cause minimal property damage. Israels new X-brand missile radar system had to be compromised with Irans new non-nuclear electromagnetic pulse warhead for up to thirty minutes so that 56-Iranian missiles could be fired into Israel from Syria and Jordan. Hanley, Vadim, and Newton are unable to stop the missile attack on Israel. The blasts from the war heads eradicate most of the living beings in Israel. The world was in turmoil but no country wanted to deal with Iran. The invading troops had the country to themselves including the mounds of dead bodies they had to deal with.

The Adventures of Thomas Williams of St. Ives, Cornwall

release date: May 01, 2012
The Adventures of Thomas Williams of St. Ives, Cornwall
An oft-forgotten number of British sailors, soldiers and merchantmen were taken prisoner during the long years of the Napoleonic Wars. Ranging from men such as Captain Moyle Sherer, who was captured in 1813, suffering less than a year of imprisonment, to Thomas Williams, who was captured only a year into the conflict. Thomas Williams was a sailor on a merchant ship and was captured after his ship lost its convoy en route to England. Williams left his memoir of his ten years in French captivity: ranging from mistreatment at the hands of his captors to his numerous escape attempts and the various characters he fell in with. A witty reminiscence on what was clearly a dark time for him, enlivened by a good sense of humour. Author — Thomas Williams (1787-1862)

Discrete Quantum Mechanics

release date: Dec 01, 2015
Discrete Quantum Mechanics
After a quarter century of discoveries that rattled the foundations of classical mechanics and electrodynamics, the year 1926 saw the publication of two works intended to provide a theoretical structure to support new quantum explanations of the subatomic world. Heisenberg''s matrix mechanics and Schrodinger’s wave mechanics provided compatible but mathematically disparate ways of unifying the discoveries of Planck, Einstein, Bohr and many others. Efforts began immediately to prove the equivalence of these two structures, culminated successfully by John von Neumann’s 1932 volume "Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics." This forms the springboard for the current effort. We begin with a presentation of a minimal set of von Neumann postulates while introducing language and notation to facilitate subsequent discussion of quantum calculations based in finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. Chapters which follow address two-state quantum systems (with spin one-half as the primary example), entanglement of multiple two-state systems, quantum angular momentum theory and quantum approaches to statistical mechanics. A concluding chapter gives an overview of issues associated with quantum mechanics in continuous infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces.
