Roots of Strategy

release date: Apr 03, 2018
Roots of Strategy
This collection contains the five greatest and most influential military classics written prior to the nineteenth century. The first, The Art of War by Sun Tzu, is not only the oldest military work in existence but is unquestionably the greatest military classic in any language. It has had little influence in the western world, but has guided Chinese and Japanese military thought for 2400 years. All the works contained in this volume are out of print in English and all are an indispensable part of an officer’s military education and the foundation of a military library. Saxe’s Reveries and Frederick the Great’s Secret Instructions to his Generals are newly translated by Major T. R. Phillips from the most authentic foreign editions.

Leave No Man Behind

release date: Jan 16, 2009
Leave No Man Behind
Beginning with the birth of combat aircraft in World War I and the early attempts to rescue warriors trapped behind enemy lines, Leave No Man Behind chronicles in depth nearly one hundred years of combat search and rescue (CSAR). All major U.S. combat operations from World War II to the early years of the Iraq War are covered, including previously classified missions and several Medal-of-Honor-winning operations. Authors George Galdorisi and Tom Phillips (both veteran U.S. Navy helicopter pilots) highlight individual acts of heroism while telling the big-picture story of the creation and development of modern CSAR. Although individual missions have their successes and failures, CSAR, as an institution, would seem beyond reproach, an obvious necessity. The organizational history of CSAR, however, is not entirely positive. The armed services, particularly the U.S. Air Force and Navy, have a tendency to cut CSAR at the end of a conflict, leaving no infrastructure prepared for the next time that the brave men and women of our armed forces find themselves behind enemy lines. The final chapter has not yet been written for U.S. combat search and rescue, but in view of the life-saving potential of these forces, an open and forthright review of U.S. military CSAR plans and policies is long overdue. Beyond the exciting stories of heroic victories and heartrending defeats, Leave No Man Behind stimulates debate on this important subject.

T.E.D. Klein and the Rupture of Civilization

release date: Jul 14, 2017
T.E.D. Klein and the Rupture of Civilization
Lauded by critics yet largely unappreciated by fans of horror and "weird fiction," T.E.D. Klein is considered one of the great horror writers, despite his scant body of work. His prose blends the mundane and the supernatural, conjuring the monstrous and the malign with accessible but charged discourse that breaks with the formulaic entries in the genre. Exploring a range of topics from religious fundamentalism and right wing extremism to fashionable pessimism and the rise of "digital humanities," the author argues that Klein''s work is a prime example of what he terms "critical horror," a distinct subgenre that entertains while questioning individual and cultural complacency.
