The Story of a Bad Boy (Children's Book)
This eBook edition has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Tom Bailey is born in the fictitious town of Rivermouth, New Hampshire, but moves to New Orleans with his family when he is still a baby. In his boyhood, his father wants him to be educated in the North and sent him back to school in Rivermouth to live with his grandfather, Captain Nutter. Tom becomes a member of a boys'' club called the Centipedes and the boys become involved in a series of adventures. In one prank, the boys steal an old carriage and push it into a bonfire for the Fourth of July. During the winter, several boys build a snow fort on Slatter''s Hill, inciting rival boys into a battle of snowballs. Later, Tom and three other boys combine their money to buy a boat named Dolphin and sneak away to an island. Tom also befriends a man nicknamed Sailor Ben. Revealed as the long-lost husband of Captain Nutter''s Irish servant, Ben settles in Rivermouth in a boat-like cabin. Sailor Ben helps the boys fire off a series of old cannon at the pier, much to the confusion of the local townspeople. When his father''s banking job fails, Tom is invited by an uncle to work in a counting-house in New York. "The Story of a Bad Boy" is an autobiographical novel by American writer Thomas Bailey Aldrich, fictionalizing his experiences as a boy in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The book is considered the first in the "bad boy" genre of literature, though the text''s opening lines admit that he was "not such a very bad, but a pretty bad boy".

An Old Town By the Sea

An Old Town By the Sea
In "An Old Town By the Sea," Thomas Bailey Aldrich offers a rich tapestry of lyrical prose intertwined with the nostalgia of a bygone era. This semi-autobiographical work delves into the intricacies of life in a quaint coastal town, capturing the delicate interplay of memory and emotion. Aldrich employs a vivid literary style that reflects the sentimentality of 19th-century Americana, merging natural imagery with musings on childhood, love, and the passage of time, thus embedding the narrative within the broader context of Romantic literature. Aldrich, an esteemed figure of the literary scene in the late 19th century, was deeply influenced by his own formative experiences along the coast of New England. His career as a poet, novelist, and editor informs the depth of his characterization and emotional resonance in this work. Aldrich''s commitment to capturing the essence of place, coupled with his sharp observational skills, allows readers to engage with the historical and cultural nuances of the seaside town he depicts so lovingly. This enchanting portrayal of life by the sea is a must-read for those who cherish evocative storytelling and a sense of place. Aldrich''s poignant reflections not only draw readers into the past but also resonate with the universal themes of memory and longing. This book stands as a timeless reminder of the beauty found in ordinary moments, making it an essential addition to any literary collection.

The Stillwater Tragedy

release date: Oct 01, 2004
The Stillwater Tragedy
It is close upon daybreak. The great wall of pines and hemlocks that keep off the west wind from Stillwater stretches black and indeterminate against the sky. At intervals a dull, metallic sound, like the guttural twang of a violin string, rises form the frog-invested swamp skirting the highway. Suddenly the birds stir in their nests over there in the woodland, and break into that wild jargoning chorus with which they herald the advent of a new day. In the apple-orchards and among the plum-trees of the few gardens in Stillwater, the wrens and the robins and the blue-jays catch up the crystal crescendo, and what a melodious racket they make of it with their fifes and flutes and flageolets! The village lies in a trance like death. Possibly not a soul hears this music, unless it is the watchers at the bedside of Mr. Leonard Tappleton, the richest man in town, who has lain dying these three days, and cannot last until sunrise. Or perhaps some mother, drowsily hushing her wakeful baby, pauses a moment and listens vacantly to the birds singing. But who else?
