Development of the Nervous System

release date: Jan 25, 2011
Development of the Nervous System
Development of the Nervous System presents a broad and basic treatment of the established and evolving principles of neural development as exemplified by key experiments and observations from past and recent times. The text is organized ontogenically. It begins with the emergence of the neural primordium and takes a chapter-by-chapter approach in succeeding events in neural development: patterning and growth of the nervous system, neuronal determination, axonal navigation and targeting, neuron survival and death, synapse formation and developmental plasticity. Finally, in the last chapter, with the construction phase nearing completion, we examine the emergence of behavior. This new edition reflects the complete modernization of the field that has been achieved through the intensive application of molecular, genetic, and cell biological approaches. It is richly illustrated with color photographs and original drawings. Combined with the clear and concise writing, the illustrations make this a book that is well suited to students approaching this intriguing field for the first time. - Thorough survey of the field of neural development - Concise but complete, suitable for a one semester course on upper level undergraduate or graduate level - Focus on fundamental principles of organogenesis in the nervous system - Integrates information from a variety of model systems, relating them to human nervous system development, including disorders of development - Systematically develops knowledge from the description of key experiments and results - Organized ontologically - Carefully edited to be presented in one voice - New edition thoroughly updated and revised to include major new findings - All figures in full color, updated and revised - Specific attention on revising the chapter on cognitive and behavioral development to provide a foundation and outlook towards those very fast moving areas - Instructor website with figure bank and test questions

Wind-tunnel Investigation of an NACA 23012 Airfoil with Two Sizes of Balanced Split Flap
An investigation has been made in the NACA 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel of an NACA 23012 airfoil with a 15-percent-chord and a 25-percent-chord balanced split flap of the Clark Y profile. The investigation was made to determine the aerodynamic section characteristics of the airfoil as affected by the size, nose location, and deflection of the flap. Complete aerodynamic section characteristics were determined for several nose locations of each flap and are presented for four typical locations for each flap. A comparison of the drag and lift characteristics is made with two other medium-chord flaps previously investigated.

Wind-tunnel Investigation of an N.A.C.A. 23012 Airfoil with Two Arrangements of a Wide-chord Slotted Flap
An investigation has been made in the N.A.C.A. 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel of a large-chord N.A.C.A. 23012 airfoil with several arrangements of a 40-percent-chord slotted flap to determine the section aerodynamic characteristics of the airfoil as affected by slot shape, flap location, and flap deflection. The flap positions for maximum lift, the polars for arrangements considered favorable for take-off and climb, and the complete section aerodynamic characteristics for selected optimum arrangements were determined. A discussion is given of the relative merits of the various arrangements. A comparison is made of slotted flaps of different chords on the N.A.C.A. 23012 airfoil.

The Effects of Equal-pressure Fixed Slots on the Characteristics of a Clark Y Aerofoil
The results of this investigation show that the condition of no airl flow through the slot at the desired lift coefficient is attainable. The surface discontinuities produced by the slot openings have, however, such a large effect on the drag that such slots show little promise. An appreciable increase is produced in the maximum lift and the speed-range ratio can be as high as for the plain wing.
