And one day when the shepherd and his wife were standing together before the house the shepherd said, ‘I will shoot old Sultan tomorrow morning, for he is of no use now.’ But his wife said, ‘Pray let the poor faithful creature live; he has served us well a great many years, and we ought to give him a livelihood for the rest of his days.’ ‘But what can we do with him?’ said the shepherd, ‘he has not a tooth in his head, and the thieves don’t care for him at all; to be sure he has served us, but then he did it to earn his livelihood; tomorrow shall be his last day, depend upon it.’ Poor Sultan, who was lying close by them, heard all that the shepherd and his wife said to one another, and was very much frightened to think tomorrow would be his last day; so in the evening he went to his good friend the wolf, who lived in the wood, and told him all his sorrows, and how his master meant to kill him in the morning. ‘Make yourself easy,’ said the wolf, ‘I will give you some good advice. Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales
The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, were born in Hanau, near Frankfurt, in the German state of Hesse. Throughout their lives they remained close friends, and both studied law at Marburg University. Jacob was a pioneer in the study of German philology, and although Wilhelm''s work was hampered by poor health the brothers collaborated in the creation of a German dictionary, not completed until a century after their deaths. But they were best (and universally) known for the collection of over two hundred folk tales they made from oral sources and published in two volumes of ''Nursery and Household Tales'' in 1812 and 1814. Although their intention was to preserve such material as part of German cultural and literary history, and their collection was first published with scholarly notes and no illustration, the tales soon came into the possession of young readers. This was in part due to Edgar Taylor, who made the first English translation in 1823, selecting about fifty stories ''with the amusement of some young friends principally in view.'' They have been an essential ingredient of children''s reading ever since.

Fairy Tales Book The Queen Bee Two kings’ sons once upon a time went into the world to seek their fortunes; but they soon fell into a wasteful foolish way of living, so that they could not return home again. Then their brother, who was a little insignificant dwarf, went out to seek for his brothers: but when he had found them they only laughed at him, to think that he, who was so young and simple, should try to travel through the world, when they, who were so much wiser, had been unable to get on. However, they all set out on their journey together and came at last to an anthill. The two elder brothers would have pulled it down, in order to see how the poor ants in their fright would run about and carry off their eggs. But the little dwarf said, ’Let the poor things enjoy themselves, I will not suffer you to trouble them.’ The Queen Bee Fairy Tales Book The Queen Bee Two sons of a king went out to seek their fortunes but fell into disorderly ways. The third and youngest son, the Simpleton, went out to find them, but they mocked him. Then they came to a castle with stone horses in the stable, and no sign of anyone. They hunted through the castle and found a room with a little gray man, who showed them to dinner. In the morning, he showed the oldest son a stone table, on which were written three tasks. Whoever performed them would free the castle. Snowdrop and Other Tales
Here is a bundle from the bag. The Christmas publishing season could not be complete without a Rackham book, and this year it is "Snowdrop and Other Tales," by the immortal Brothers Grimm. Never was an artist better suited with a subject; and the child who discovers the famous "Fairy Tales," or returns to them, will be doubly satisfied in that he or she will know just how the personages of the tale looked when they lived. The Brothers Grimm draw out all that is most excellent in Mr. Arthur Rackham''s work; its imagination, ingenuity, energy and its beautiful draughtsmanship. Fortunately for the children they do not tire of the old classics, and the Brothers Grimm are still kings of the nursery with Mr. Rackham as their Grand Vizier, and long may they reign, for they bring faerydom and the Queen of Faery into our dull and anxious days. --The Bookman, Volume 59
