Serum Ferritin's Relationship to Training Reduction Among College Distance Runners

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Serum Ferritin's Relationship to Training Reduction Among College Distance Runners
"Introduction: Iron deficiency (ID), measured as serum ferritin (SF), has been found in 31% and 57% of elite male and female athletes respectively. In distance runners, ID has been found to affect up to 41% of men and 82% of women. There are significant health consequences of ID such as decreased bone mineral density, altered thyroid function, immune suppression, and fatigue. Purpose: To determine if there is a relationship between ID and training reductions due to injury, illness, and fatigue in collegiate distance runners. Hypothesis: Because ID affects bone health, fatigue, thyroid, and immune function, it is hypothesized that distance runners with ID experience training reductions more frequently than athletes with normal SF levels. Methods: A preexisting data set consisting 47 NCAA Division 1 cross country runners'' (M=20 years +/- 1.69) SF, injury information, fatigue reports, and training volume was analyzed. SF levels were measured preceding the cross-country season in early September and following the season in early December. Athletes supplemented with ferrous sulfate elixir according to the SF level throughout the season. A generalized linear model investigated associations between training reduction, SF, and training volume. A chi-squared test compared ID athletes (=35 [mu]g/L) and athletes with normal SF (35 [mu]g/L). Significance was set at

A Preliminary Report on Conservation

release date: Jan 01, 2016
A Preliminary Report on Conservation
"Well before the 1890 United States Census, Frederick Jackson Turner''s 1893 Frontier Thesis, and the subsequent movements toward extensive preservation and conservation projects, a largely unheralded federal legislative action, granting the Yosemite Valey and the adjacent Mariposa Big Tree Grove to the state of California to be preserved in perpetuity, was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln in 1864. This was done in response to the fear that, in just a few years, profiteers would exploit and irrevocably destroy two areas of unique beauty and grandeur, as was done to Niagara Falls a decade and a half earlier. The act required California to appoint a commission to devise a plan of management for the land grant, and in 1865, the commission set to the task, headed by the internationally recognized landscape architect and co-creator of New York City''s Centra Park: Frederick Law Olmstead. The commissioned management proposal was eventually passed over for another plan and lost to history until 1952, but the document has proven to be remarkable in many ways. A recent critique of the historical significance of Frederick Law Olmstead''s "Yosemite and the Mariposa Grove: A Preliminary Report, 1865" has discounted it as being "elaborated to produce what can only be called an origin myth [of Yosemite and the national park idea]" and by conjecturing that Olmstead is honored as a father of environmental conservation "largely because his report was ignored." Throughout this paper, I will demonstrate that Olmstead''s report holds significant historical significance because it depicts the philosophical underpinnings of the national park idea and indavertently anticipates several key practices that subsequently evolved"--Page iii.

The Effect of Interest Groups on Poliheuristic Decision Making

release date: Jan 01, 2015
The Effect of Interest Groups on Poliheuristic Decision Making
Poliheuristic (PH) decision making theory has been developed to bridge rational choice and cognitive based theories of foreign policy decision making. PH theory asserts that decisions are made in two stages. In the first stage, decision makers act based on simplified decision strategies, or cognitive heuristics which seek to constrain the decision alternatives. In the second stage, the decision maker weighs the alternatives and selects the one which maximizes utility, according to the rational actor framework. Using the case of the Keystone XL pipeline and President Barack Obama''s indecision on it, it is my aim to assess whether PH theory can explain Obama''s postponement of a decision on the pipeline and how interest groups effect decision making in the first stage of PH theory. I conclude that interest groups primarily influence PH decisions by making certain alternatives politically too costly, framing issues in certain ways, and by increasing the salience of an issue to both the public and the decision maker. In addition, I find that PH theory is able to explain Obama''s decision making on the Keystone XL issue.

Days on the Beach

Days on the Beach
Oakland PD Officers Bull Brewster and Tex-Mex Garcia get the job done... ...but on their terms. Whether it''s a madcap chase with stolen cars or a night on the town with a pair of "working girls," the rogue officers never let threat of disciplinary action get in their way as they cement their reps as irreverent street cops-they just take their DAYS ON THE BEACH, and then get back to business. Brewster and Tex-Mex aren''t the only action on the mean streets of Oakland, however. The city is on edge as a sociopathic pair cuts a savage swath. Rape and murder cases stack up, but law enforcement''s frantic search is stymied until some good, old-fashioned gumshoe detective work leads to a high noon face-off. AUTHOR BIO:After thirty-one years of service, John Taylor retired from the Oakland Police Department in 2002 and now makes his home in a small town in Northern California.

Death and the Afterlife in Ancient Egypt

release date: Apr 01, 2001
Death and the Afterlife in Ancient Egypt
Of all the ancient peoples, the Egyptians are perhaps best known for the fascinating ways in which they grappled with the mysteries of death and the afterlife. This beautifully illustrated book draws on the British Museum''s world-famous collection of mummies and other funerary evidence to offer an accessible account of Egyptian beliefs in an afterlife and examine the ways in which Egyptian society responded materially to the challenges these beliefs imposed. The author describes in detail the numerous provisions made for the dead and the intricate rituals carried out on their behalf. He considers embalming, coffins and sarcophagi, shabti figures, magic and ritual, and amulets and papyri, as well as the mummification of sacred animals, which were buried by the millions in vast labyrinthine catacombs. The text also reflects recent developments in the interpretation of Egyptian burial practices, and incorporates the results of much new scientific research. Newly acquired information derives from a range of sophisticated applications, such as the use of noninvasive imaging techniques to look inside the wrappings of a mummy, and the chemical analysis of materials used in the embalming process. Authoritative, concise, and lucidly written, Death and the Afterlife in Ancient Egypt illuminates aspects of this complex, vibrant culture that still perplex us more than 3,000 years later.

Body Horror

Body Horror
Asks why anyone would want to look at shocking photographs. The text questions what happens when the press uses gruesome images to represent accidents and disasters, murder and execution, grief and death. It examines how the press pictures the dead and injured bodies of foreigners, with particular reference to the special conditions of photographing the horror of wars in the Gulf, Bosnia and Rwanda. It argues that hard-hitting documentary photography contributes to public knowledge and helps to define the freedom of the press.

Indonesia's Forgotten War

release date: Jan 01, 1991
Indonesia's Forgotten War
The people of East Timor voted overwhelmingly in August 1999 for independence and an end to Indonesian occupation. In this updated and much expanded edition of Indonesia''s Forgotten War: The Hidden History of East Timor (Zed Books, rev ed 1994), John Taylor tells the story of what happened following President Suharto''s overthrow. The new government conceded the right of the United Nations to organise the long delayed referendum giving the East Timorese a choice between continued association with Indonesia or independence. At the very moment the historic vote was being counted, armed gangs organised by the Indonesian military plunged the island into an orgy of killing, burning and forced flight. John Taylor analyses the world''s reaction to this new genocide of the East Timorese people, the despatch of a peacekeeping force, and the prospects of independence.
