The ladies dictionary, being a general entertainment for the fair-sex was published on 19 March 1694 by John Dunton. No compiler was named on the title page, but the dedication by 'the author' addressed 'to the Ladies, Gentlewomen, and Others, of the Fair-Sex' was signed 'N. H.' The book offers around 1950 lexical and encyclopaedic entries, the great majority excerpted either verbatim or with some degree of abridgement or adaptation from other published books. It was the first substantial reference book to be published in England with women as its principal target audience, and was arguably the first alphabetically-arranged encyclopaedia to be published in English. The editor's introduction in this edition starts with an overview of the publisher John Dunton, and goes on to discuss the compilers of LD; its sources; its editing, printing and proof-reading; and its advertising, publication and afterlife. It concludes with lists of primary and secondary sources (including all the identified sources of LD). The reproduction of the dictionary that follows is from the Robert H. Taylor collection at Princeton. Because LD is irregularly alphabetized, the reproduction is followed by a new index of entries in strict alphabetical order, with their sources identified.

The Spacious Margin: Eighteenth-Century Printed Books and the Traces of their Readers draws from the holdings of the Bruce Peel Special Collections Library at the University of Alberta, presenting an array of readerly interactions with books in the form of annotations, improvements, corrections, ornamentation, and suggestive wear-and-tear. In this scholarly catalogue, Brown and Considine describe and contextualize the notable physical traces of readership and circulation for each of the 62 items displayed in the accompanying exhibition (The Spacious Margin, Bruce Peel Special Collections Library, 5 October 2012 - 15 February 2013). The result is a snapshot of the life of books and readers in the eighteenth century: in the British Isles and beyond, from the modestly literate users of well-thumbed dictionaries to learned critics of canonical poets and contemporary philosophers.

1,260 individuals over the age of 35 across the U.S. whose total 2019 charitable donations ranged from $2,000 to $20,000 were asked about their giving habits in April 2020. We found that midlevel donors countered national trends, in that they gave generously and consistently, well before their retirement years, and while there was a disconnect between satisfaction and knowledge of impact, donors were open to learning how to be more thoughtful and effective.

The nonprofit sector in the U.S. and much of the world is experiencing an erosion of donations from small- and mid-level donors with increasing influence from affluent donors, raising concerns about a less democratic and more financially volatile sector. Understanding small- and mid-level donors' satisfaction with their charitable giving is key to ensuring they remain active supporters of the nonprofit sector. This novel qualitative study surveyed 153 U.S.-based donors aged 35 and older who gave up to $20,000 to charity in the past year. A minority--about two in five--of respondents reported overall satisfaction with their charitable giving, with a similar number reporting being somewhat satisfied and about one in six indicating low satisfaction. Feelings of dissatisfaction stemmed primarily from a sense of ineffectiveness; however, most respondents indicated interest in learning how to be more effective with their giving.

In the past two decades, the influence of midlevel charitable donors--defined in this study as donating between $2,000 and $20,000 in a year--has declined as that of major donors increased. In response, this study aimed to better understand midlevel donors by examining their approaches to charitable giving and the extent to which they give to high-impact organizations. We analyzed descriptive statistics and multivariate probit models using a novel study of 1,260 midlevel donors. We found that respondents were least likely to give in response to fundraising appeals and most likely to give to organizations that worked on causes or issues they cared most about. The more they gave to causes they cared most about, the more they gave to high-impact organizations. Our results suggest that the key to helping midlevel donors give more effectively is to first help them to identify what issues they are most passionate about.
