Introduction to Sociology (First Edition)

release date: Dec 31, 2016
Introduction to Sociology (First Edition)
The anthology Everyday Sociology: Culture, Power, and the Social World introduces readers to the grit of our social world. Emphasizing constructionism, situational behavior, and cultural power, the text uses a carefully crafted structure to present critical information, and it features exciting and engaging writings that relate the content to everyday life. The book is organized into sections that highlight the way we view our everyday world, the culture of social control, the faces of power, and social inequality, power, and progress. Specific topics include the sociological imagination, deviance and crime, making sense of race, class, and gender, and implicit bias. All chapters within the units have original introductions that frame the content. These highly personal passages are dubbed Dr. Sue to You, providing intimate narratives from author to audience. Original instructional devices include Beyond the Book, which links content to other ideas, experiences, and disciplines, From the Field, which touches on related research, and Reality Checks, which grounds the content in real-world experiences. Everyday Sociology provides a clear sociological background to high-interest yet challenging issues and ideas. Written to be equally educational and intriguing, it is ideal for introductory sociology courses. L. Susan Williams is an associate professor of sociology and criminology at Kansas State University, specializing in violence and inequality, with an emphasis on the effects of place. Her ground-breaking research for the National Science Foundation empirically documented the independent effect of local community on the life decisions of individual adolescent girls. Her research into rural youth and gendered violence resulted in two studies - Bad Girls from Rural Places and Rural Outlaws. Dr. Williams' recent interests include prison ethnography, women and crime, violence and survivors, and gender construction.

Clean Eating Diet

release date: Oct 31, 2015
Clean Eating Diet
The basic principle behind clean eating is simple - it's all about going back to our roots. When we look back at how man used to eat, it's easy to see how much things have changed. The diet consisted of entirely unprocessed, raw and organic foods that were taken from the earth instead of being produced in a factory. When they cooked their food, it didn't go through any harsh cooking methods and was able to retain its core nutrients. Now when we cook, the final product is often very different from how it was in its natural state. We've gotten so hooked on preservatives and added sugar that we don't know how to eat without them. The clean eating diet is very different from any other diet. For one, it's not a 'fad' but rather a way of eating. The ten day diet plan is simply a way to cleanse your body and introduce you to a new way of living. It gives you the chance to take a closer look at the foods that you are eating and gives you a better insight into how these foods make you feel. The rule is that if a food contains chemicals or has undergone any type of processing method then it is best avoided. Avoid foods that contain large amounts of sodium and sugar, unless they are naturally present. This change alone will produce drastic weight loss and a change in the way you look and feel. The clean eating diet is a war against the way modern food is produced and represents a revolution aimed at making society healthier. Here Is A Preview Of What You'll Learn The What and the Why - exactly which food additives to avoid when shopping for groceries The Benefits of Clean Eating The Ten Day Diet Plan Tasty Clean Eating Recipes Exercise as a Supplement to Clean Eating 33 Steps to Weight Loss Success And much, much more! Mediterranean Diet

release date: Nov 13, 2015
Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean Diet has evolved naturally and is the result of many centuries of cross-cultural exchange and refinement. It is not a diet in the strictest sense but rather a natural dietary tradition. It is therefore easier to adapt to because it is wholesome in its approach and contains comparatively fewer restrictions than most other modern diet plans. Go on a journey to the center of culinary history. The Mediterranean Diet is among one of the oldest diets known to man. It comes from a region where some of the earliest civilizations in the western world originated, the Greek and the Roman civilizations. The meaning of the term 'Mediterranean' which comes from Latin can be interpreted as "in between lands" or "in the middle of the earth." This is significant since the Mediterranean Sea is situated where three continents -Africa, Asia and Europe - meet. Just as the Mediterranean region represents a geographical and cultural crossroad, the Mediterranean Diet is a combination of different culinary traditions. It is important to understand that the Mediterranean Diet represents not just a way of eating but a way of life. It makes sense therefore to adapt the Mediterranean Diet in a holistic manner by more than just choosing the right kind of food but also by preparing and eating it the way the ancient Greeks and the Romans did. Needless to say, combining the Mediterranean Diet with an active lifestyle will make it more enjoyable and produce healthier results. Lose weight without feeling restricted. From bruschetta to paella, from the gazpacho to the anytime snack of falafel, from the irresistible baba ghanoush to the tantalizing tzatziki, the Mediterranean Diet is as much an epicurean delight as it is a healthy diet. It is perhaps the only diet where eating is not associated with guilt or restriction but with pleasure. If you want to get healthy and lose excess weight, wouldn't you like to enjoy it? Instead of asking you to give up eating food that you enjoy or asking you to eat less, the Mediterranean Diet recommends that you eat abundantly, albeit the right kind of food. You will rarely see obesity on the islands of Crete and Sardinia, nor will you see any overweight people in Greece, Italy or Turkey. The Mediterranean Diet is the perfect way of eating to follow if you want to lose weight and keep it off for life! Here Is A Preview Of What You'll Learn The origins and history of the Mediterranean Diet How the Mediterranean Diet gained global popularity The main ingredients used in Mediterranean Diet recipes Why the Mediterranean Diet is good for weight loss How the Mediterranean Diet helps prevent disease 101 recipes for preparing delicious low calorie meals high in nutritional value And many more healthy tips tags: mediterranean diet cookbook, mediterranean diet for weight loss, mediterranean diet for beginners, mediterranean diet recipes, mediterranean diet for weight loss, mediterranean diet meal plan, mediterranean diet plan, italian recipes, greek recipes, turkish recipes, prevent heart disease, heart disease prevention, low calorie recipes, weight loss

California's 1991 Drought Water Bank

release date: Jan 01, 1993
California's 1991 Drought Water Bank
In 1991, to mitigate the effects of a five-year drought, the California department of Water Resources bought water from farmers, landlords, and agencies in northern and central California and resold it to urban and agricultural areas. This study found that although operating costs and crop sales were substantially reduced for farmers who participated in the Bank, the Bank's economic impact was not large compared to the general agricultural economy of the region and to historic variations in the agricultural sector, and that participating farmers increased their farm investment. Recommendations for future banks include spreading purchases and rotating farmers to diffuse the bank's negative impacts, considering a lower water purchase price, using standard rules and contracts, and developing procedures to minimize divisiveness among landlords, tenants, and local businesses.
