White Malice

release date: Sep 30, 2021
White Malice
Accra, 1958. Africa’s liberation leaders have gathered for a conference, full of strength, purpose and vision. Newly independent Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah and Congo’s Patrice Lumumba strike up a close partnership. Everything seems possible. But, within a few years, both men will have been targeted by the CIA, and their dream of true African autonomy undermined. The United States, watching the Europeans withdraw from Africa, was determined to take control. Pan-Africanism was inspiring African Americans fighting for civil rights; the threat of Soviet influence over new African governments loomed; and the idea of an atomic reactor in black hands was unacceptable. The conclusion was simple: the US had to ‘recapture’ Africa, in the shadows, by any means necessary. Renowned historian Susan Williams dives into the archives, revealing new, shocking details of America’s covert programme in Africa. The CIA crawled over the continent, poisoning the hopes of 1958 with secret agents and informants; surreptitious UN lobbying; cultural infiltration and bribery; assassinations and coups. As the colonisers moved out, the Americans swept in—with bitter consequences that reverberate in Africa to this day

Determining Marijuana Use in the Age of Legalization

release date: Apr 29, 2021
Determining Marijuana Use in the Age of Legalization
Marijuana legalization presents new issues for the health professional in assessing use patterns. The days of dubious products from illegal markets are disappearing. With lab quality marijuana, driven by a medical-use focus secondary to a recreational focus, dosing is becoming more measurable and understandable. At the same time, legal markets are complicating the matter as marijuana is now available in many forms, from flowers to concentrates to edibles to infusions to pre-measured vape pens to transdermal patches to suppositories. There are more ways to get THC into your system than ever before. Dispensaries offer no recommendations for use other than "start low, go slow" citing that dosing (basically, how much THC you put into your system in what form you consume it at one time) is determined individually by trial and error. In this book, Scott Graham presents a consistent method for calculating and measuring "servings" across multiple products. It includes a link to a downloadable PDF form to help health professionals gather critical information to track and assess use. An essay addressing counselor bias toward legal marijuana and a curated bibliography round out the text.

Fed Up with Diets

release date: Apr 28, 2019
Fed Up with Diets
The minute we embark on a diet, or two, we begin to change our natural innate relationship with food. Food obsession can creep in, and it can become very easy to find yourself on the incessant bandwagon of yo-yo dieting. It''s finally becoming a well documented fact that diets do, indeed, in the long-term cause more weight gain, not weight loss. Unfortunately the societal pressure to conform to skinny or thin is relentless. Sadly young children and teens are the most vunerable to these pressures. More often than not that simple first diet, that seemed so harmless, leads to the beginnings of an eating disorder. We have lost our way with food. So many of us struggle with food extremes. Feast or famine combined with the never-ending battle with emotional eating. Intuitive and Mindful eating is not a diet. It brings us back to eating based on our own hunger and satisfaction. It allows us to re-build that lost trust with our bodies and food, and connect with our own inner-wisdom.Susan celebrates recovery from her battle with an eating disorder. In this her first book, she shares how her eating disorder, Anorexia Bulimia, dire restricting and bingeing would plague her for many decades. We follow her through her own personal journey of self discovery, and how she also came to understand her co-dependancy issues. The story takes us From her upbringing in Northern England, and her Interior Design background, through all the life changing events in-between. In this short self reflection, Susan discovers the whys behind her bulimia, bingeing, restricting and emotional eating, that engulfed most of her life. Her new career later as a therapist, happily brought a new self awareness that would begin to push her eating disorder forward out into the open. When things are then finally brought to a head, and her health also begins to take a downward spiral, she turns to Intuitive eating and the healing process begins, emotionally and physically. Because of her 25 year long battle with her body and food, Susan is a passionate advocate for the prevention of eating disorders. She educates the general public and young adults about the benefits of Intuitive and mindful eating and its transformative qualities. This book illustrates how diets can sometimes lead to eating disorders and negatively impact our health. Susan provides the reader with the simple steps needed to begin their own Intuitive and mindful eating practice. She also reminds us of how our histories often hold the key to our present day realities, and that change can promote positive growth.

Atomic Africa

release date: Feb 05, 2019
Atomic Africa
African Independence movements from former colonial powers were unsuccessful governments. But not because they lacked the skills. They were systematically undermined by one nation: the US. This is the sweeping history of how, over a few vital years, African Independence was strangled at birth. In 1958 in Accra, Ghana, the Hands Off Africa conference brought together the leading figures of African independence in a public show of political strength and purpose, inspired by the example of Ghana itself which, under the charismatic leadership of Kwame Nkrumah, had just thrown off the British colonial yoke - the first African nation to do so. It was moment heady with promise for independence movements across Africa, and for all those who believed colonialism was a moral aberration. Among the supporters of African independence were some of the leading figures of the American Civil Rights movement. Malcolm X was in Accra and Martin Luther King used Nkrumah''s speech as the basis for his own "Free At Last" speech, so clear were the parallels between their own struggle for political equality in the US with that of the African Nations. W. E. B. Du Bois moved to Ghana, inspired by the future of independent Africa. Yet among the many official messages of support received by the conference one nation was conspicuously quiet, despite its historic and public opposition to colonialism. America had vowed to dismantle the British Empire. Yet it was strangely silent about Hands Off Africa. Vice President Nixon did attend the celebrations in Ghana and asked a group of black people, "How does it feel to be free?"They answered: "We wouldn''t know. We''re from Alabama". The conference was also attended by a slew of strange societies, most promising support for African independence. They, however, were not all they seemed. Many were fronts, and behind them was the CIA. The CIA was in favor of the end of the British Empire but much less sure about what it wanted to replace it. A pan-African independence movement, one susceptible to Soviet entreaties, looked like a security threat. So the agency prepared to move in as Africa''s colonizers moved out. Their baleful influence would be felt from South Africa (they tipped off the apartheid regime so that Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962) to Congo (where the firebrand prime minister Patrice Lumumba was murdered, one of any Africa leaders who died prematurely).

Shades of Grief

Shades of Grief
Shades of Grief recounts a unique personal odyssey following an ill-fated airplane flight, in which the author''s husband, the pilot, and three of his closest friends were killed upon take off. Adrift in grief, and without faith in the "eternal hereafter," Susan''s journey led her through various shades of darkness and finally into a light of understanding. Along the way, she listened to the Buddhist monks chant to the deity Quan Yin, stood on historic battle fields, listened in isolation for the binary beat, screamed her heart out while acting on stage, visited psychics and came to wear the garb of the Crone. These were a few of the many experiences she experienced on her pilgrimage through the heart of sorrow. Susan''s journey led her on a path of discovery where she eventually found healing and peace. With a poignant voice and a humorous outlook Susan Williams shares her journey as she attempts to come to grips with one of life''s greatest mysteries.

A United Kingdom.
The Guardian «Incredibilmente emozionante. » Telegraph «Un libro splendido. » The Spectator Susan Williams È una storica e autrice di numerosi saggi. Emphasizing constructionism, situational behavior, and cultural power, the text uses a carefully crafted structure to present critical information, and it features exciting and engaging writings that relate the content to everyday life. The book is organized into sections that highlight the way we view our everyday world, the culture of social control, the faces of power, and social inequality, power, and progress. Specific topics include the sociological imagination, deviance and crime, making sense of race, class, and gender, and implicit bias. Spies in the Congo

release date: Aug 09, 2016
Spies in the Congo
In the 1940s, the brightest minds of the United States and Nazi Germany raced to West Africa with a single mission: to secure the essential ingredient of the atomic bomb -- and to make sure nobody saw them doing it Albert Einstein told President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 that the world''s only supply of uniquely high-quality uranium ore -- the key ingredient for bomb -- could be found in the Katanga province of the Belgian Congo at the Shinkolobwe Mine. Once the US Manhattan Project was committed to developing atomic weapons for the war against Germany and Japan, the rush to procure this uranium became a top priority -- one deemed "vital to the welfare of the United States." But covertly exporting it from Africa posed a major risk: the ore had to travel via a spy-infested Angolan port or 1,500 miles by rail through the Congo, and then be shipped by boats or Pan Am Clippers to safety in the United States. It could be poached or smuggled at any point on the orders of Nazi Germany. To combat that threat, the US Office of Strategic Services sent in a team of intrepid spies, led by Wilbur Owings "Dock" Hogue, to be America''s eyes and ears and to protect its most precious and destructive cargo. Packed with newly discovered details from American and British archives, this is the gripping, true story of the unsung heroism of a handful of good men -- and one woman -- in colonial Africa who risked their lives in the fight against fascism and helped deny Hitler his atomic bomb.

Planet Ben

release date: May 02, 2014
Planet Ben
Are you tired of lies, broken promises, cheating and emotional game playing? Are you in a relationship so toxic that you''re questioning your own sanity, yet can''t seem to break away? Have you changed from the happy, confident woman you used to be before you met him, feeling depressed, anxious and insecure? That''s my story too. That''s life with a narcissist. We live in a world of narcissism but how do you know if your partner really is a toxic narcissist, or whether you should just give it more time and patience? Here are some clues: Has he told you how amazing you are, that he''s never felt like this before? How he feels like with you he has won the lottery? How his ex''s all want him back but they''re all psychos who hurt him too much? Has he romanced you with flowers and gifts, behaved like your perfect Prince Charming? Has he been your dream man in every way, only to suddenly misinterpret something you say and become viciously cold and silent, even to disappear completely for a while? Has he raged in anger over the smallest thing? If he hasn''t done so yet, he will. Be prepared. The minute he knows he has you, he will turn. It''s a cat and mouse game and he is a master at it. His Prince Charming persona is only a facade; look behind the mask and you will find he is a total fraud. The Love Games is so titled because a relationship with a narcissist is very much a series of control and mind games cloaked within the name of love. To a narcissist, a relationship is not a partnership but simply a competition to be the best, which he must win at all costs. He is a damaged man who has repeated the same abusive and emotional manipulations with every woman he has been with and if you have played into his game he will do the same to you. In Planet Ben the reader is taken on my own journey as I enter Ben''s narcissistic world, believing I have met the man of my dreams, only to find out I am caught up in a fairytale nightmare. This book outlines the romantic beginning, the methods he uses to set the game up and the confusion and bewilderment that sets in as my ideal love begins to change from Mr Nice to Mr Nasty, something that every partner of a narcissist experiences. After an initial intro on narcissism, the balance of the book is relayed in a diary form which I kept throughout the relationship. You will see my struggle to understand what I am dealing with as the Jeckyll/Hyde character that inevitably manifests within a narcissistic relationship, makes his appearance through day to day examples. You will also witness my denial of how bad things really are, something that often happens to those on the receiving end of emotional abuse as they struggle to cope. Along with insights into the narcissistic personality, Planet Ben provides suggestions on how to avoid making the same mistakes that I did and outlines the personality traits and patterns of your own that may be keeping you trapped within a narcissist''s toxic game. If you are with a narcissist you will most certainly see your own situation reflected within the pages of this book.

Book of Jeremiah

release date: Jan 15, 2014
Book of Jeremiah
Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., will forever be linked to the historical 2008 presidential campaign of then-Senator Barack Obama. Although unwillingly thrust into the spotlight, the media attention could never overshadow Wright’s prophetic teachings, nor does it define his life and ministry. "The Book of Jeremiah" examines the man, an African American, a patriot who served his country, a scholar, a prophet, and a pastor. The relevance of his ministry reaches far beyond his pastorate at Trinity United Church of Christ, Chicago. Wright''s ministry has transcended to a global stage with a message of liberation and justice. Smith provides the most comprehensive picture of the Rev. Wright, and as a close confidante, sheds light on his upbringing, teaching and preaching influences, and the far-reaching effects of his ministry on Barack Obama and the world.

Alice Morse Earle and the Domestic History of Early America

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Alice Morse Earle and the Domestic History of Early America
Author, collector, and historian Alice Morse Earle (1851-1911) was among the most important and prolific writers of her day. Between 1890 and 1904, she produced seventeen books as well as numerous articles, pamphlets, and speeches about the life, manners, customs, and material culture of colonial New England. Earle''s work coincided with a surge of interest in early American history, genealogy, and antique collecting, and more than a century after the publication of her first book, her contributions still resonate with readers interested in the nation''s colonial past. An intensely private woman, Earle lived in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and four children and conducted much of her research either by mail or at the newly established Long Island Historical Society. She began writing on the eve of her fortieth birthday, and the impressive body of scholarship she generated over the next fifteen years stimulated new interest in early American social customs, domestic routines, foodways, clothing, and childrearing patterns. Written in a style calculated to appeal to a wide readership, Earle''s richly illustrated books recorded the intimated details of what she described as colonial "home life." These works reflected her belief that women had played a key historical role, helping to nurture communities by constructing households that both served and shaped their families. It was a vision that spoke eloquently to her contemporaries, who were busily creating exhibitions of early American life in museums, staging historical pageants and other forms of patriotic celebration, and furnishing their own domestic interiors.
