McClure, a Harvard professor of Linguistics, receives an unusual request from the government, specifically, NASA, about taking a sabbatical from teaching and undertaking a designated top-secret assignment.. Robuku Makolu, aka Robby McKoy, native to an insignificant South Pacific Island and director of Remote Island Missions, is in San Francisco, CA, for an international conference, when a clairvoyant childhood friend he has not seen in forty years unexpectedly contacts him. In a matter of days, Tom draws Robby into the top-secret assignment placing Robby's people and their way of life in jeopardy. Central America in the Crosshairs of War

release date: Jun 15, 2024
Central America in the Crosshairs of War
During the 1980s, the Reagan Administration financed and directed wars against popular movements in El Salvador and Nicaragua that left more than 300,000 dead and countless more wounded. Vowing to block "Soviet expansion," the U.S. waged a Vietnam-style counterinsurgency against leftist rebels in El Salvador while orchestrating an illegal and covert war to overthrow the Sandinista government in Nicaragua. Some 75,000 died in El Salvador, mostly at the hands of U.S.-backed military and security forces, and more than 30,000 were killed in Nicaragua. Meanwhile, with tacit American support, the Guatemalan military razed hundreds of communities and killed an estimated 200,000 people during a 36-year civil war, including 100,000 Indigenous Mayan villagers. Scott Wallace arrived in Central America in 1983 to cover the conflicts as a freelance "stringer" for CBS News, and he would also later report for Newsweek, The Nation, The Guardian, Atlanta Journal and Constitution, and other news organizations. Seeking to discern the truth in a region riddled with death and deception, Wallace evolved a distinctive style of field reporting that included photography, writing, and broadcast recordings. He stayed in the region throughout the decade, moving back and forth across national boundaries and battlelines to produce a unique body of work that includes the perspectives of opposing sides of the interwoven conflicts as well as their impacts on the noncombatants tragically caught in the middle. He later reported from Afghanistan and Iraq. Situating the exercise of U.S. power on a continuum running from Vietnam through Central America to Iraq and the Middle East, In the Crosshairs of War provides a rare look into the shocking real-life consequences of morally dubious policies while offering a gripping primer for aspiring foreign correspondents and field reporters. As Wallace reminds us, the multiple "troubles" associated today with America's southern border--among them immigration, drugs, and crime--are in significant measure the result of misadventures undertaken by the U.S. during the administrations of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. He also shows a continuum in U.S. military affairs, from Vietnam to Central America and the Middle East.

The Joslin Diabetes Center
The Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, Massachusetts is a leading center for diabetes care, clinician training, and research. The incidence of diabetes is rising precipitously worldwide, challenging quality of life with its complications and rapidly accelerating health care expenditures for employers and governments. The Unconquered

The Unconquered
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The extraordinary true story of a journey into the deepest recesses of the Amazon to track one of the planet's last uncontacted indigenous tribes. Even today there remain tribes in the far reaches of the Amazon rainforest that have avoided contact with modern civilization. Deliberately hiding from the outside world, they are the last survivors of an ancient culture that predates the arrival of Columbus in the New World. In this gripping first-person account of adventure and survival, author Scott Wallace chronicles an expedition into the Amazon’s uncharted depths, discovering the rainforest’s secrets while moving ever closer to a possible encounter with one such tribe—the mysterious flecheiros, or “People of the Arrow,” seldom-glimpsed warriors known to repulse all intruders with showers of deadly arrows. On assignment for National Geographic, Wallace joins Brazilian explorer Sydney Possuelo at the head of a thirty-four-man team that ventures deep into the unknown in search of the tribe. Possuelo’s mission is to protect the Arrow People. But the information he needs to do so can only be gleaned by entering a world of permanent twilight beneath the forest canopy. Danger lurks at every step as the expedition seeks out the Arrow People even while trying to avoid them. Along the way, Wallace uncovers clues as to who the Arrow People might be, how they have managed to endure as one of the last unconquered tribes, and why so much about them must remain shrouded in mystery if they are to survive. Laced with lessons from anthropology and the Amazon’s own convulsed history, and boasting a Conradian cast of unforgettable characters—all driven by a passion to preserve the wild, but also wracked by fear, suspicion, and the desperate need to make it home alive—The Unconquered reveals this critical battleground in the fight to save the planet as it has rarely been seen, wrapped in a page-turning tale of adventure.

Walking Between Worlds

release date: Jul 06, 2011
Walking Between Worlds
Whether your journey is gay or straight, walking between the Christian and gay worlds, initially, is not the most comfortable of journeys. Even on the current world stage we have on the one hand President Obama who brings a hopeful new voice encouraging others to ‘embrace our gay brothers and sisters’, inviting Gene Robinson, the first openly gay consecrated bishop in the Episcopal Church, to pray at an inaugural ceremony and on the other hand Pope Benedict XVI declaring that saving humanity from homosexuality was just as important as saving the rainforest from destruction; and opposing a UN declaration “calling for an end to the practice of criminalizing and punishing people for their sexual orientation.” In other words, the Vatican agrees with the idea that homosexuality should be made illegal and gays be punished. Pink triangles anyone? Resilient to the regularity of anti-gay rhetoric, the gay community has heard the new, ever growing, Christian voices questioning theological tradition and embracing the true message of ‘love one another’. Such as the ‘100 Revs’, a group of ministers, reverends and pastors from a variety of denominations, apologizing to the gay community for the lack of welcome in the church.. Who, with the possibility of losing their jobs, bravely marched at the Mardi Gras parade and won the award for the most outstanding political statement. This exhibition documents the extraordinary stories of some who walk confidently and comfortably between those two worlds, as told in their own words. Thank you to all who took part in this project and willingness to share, sometimes difficult, parts of their lives. Be prepared to be inspired by these people who are not willing to merely tolerate, but rather, celebrate diversity. iain

Basking Sharks

release date: Jan 01, 2006
Basking Sharks
The basking shark, a fish the size of a London bus, used to appear off the BC coast every spring. During World War II, the fish became a nuisance to commercial nets and fishing trollers. Gliding just below the surface, the basking shark was an easy target for a new pest eradication program that touted killing one of the plankton-eating monsters as great sport. By 1970, the basking shark was virtually eradicated in BC. Now researchers Scott Wallace and Brian Gisborne have pieced together what there is to know about this locally extinct ocean denizen. Basking Sharks is Number 14 in the Transmontanus series of books edited by Terry Glavin.

Ecological and Agricultural Values of Winter-flooded Rice Fields in Mississippi

release date: Jan 01, 1999
Ecological and Agricultural Values of Winter-flooded Rice Fields in Mississippi
Winter management of harvested ricefields can resolve important challenges of ecological conservation and agriculture. I evaluated the combined effects of post-harvest ricefield treatment (standing stubble or disked) and winter flooding on selected environmental, agricultural, and waterbird food variables. Winter flooding of ricefields conserved soil and nutrients while increasing quality of runoff waters, especially when ricefields were not disked after fall harvest. Winter flooding also reduced rice straw and retarded growth of winter weeds. Less straw and weeds would require less tillage and herbicide application in spring, contributing to a potential combined savings of as much as $54/ha ($22/ac). These collective attributes make winter flooding of ricefields a beneficial conservaiton and agricultural practice. In fields with red rice infestation, seed viability can be reduced to
