Bix

release date: Apr 28, 2020
Bix
From the acclaimed Eisner Award–nominated creator of Two Generals and Northwest Passage comes a gorgeous and spare illustrated exploration of the rapid rise and tragic fall of 1920s legendary jazz soloist Leon “Bix” Beiderbecke. Told in stunning illustrations, Bix is a near-wordless graphic exploration highlighting the career of Leon Bix Beiderbecke, one of the most innovative jazz soloists of the 1920s next to the legendary Louis Armstrong. While composing and recording some of the landmark music in the early history of genre, Bix struggled with personal demons, facing the disapproval of his conservative parents and an increasing dependence on alcohol. Presented in predominantly silent panels to reflect his rebellious outsider quality and inability to communicate in anything other than his own musical terms, Bix tells the story of a music star’s rapid rise and tragic fall—a metaphor for the glories and risks inherent in the creative life.

But their plans go awry when they arrive to find Jared already on the throne! And it''s nowhere near the joyful reunion one might expect --- instead, Dessa is captured and thrown into the dungeon! It''s clear her brother is in no position to come to her aid, so she needs to find another way out. The three thieves have pulled off a number of tricky escapes together, but this time Dessa''s on her own ... Or is she? The conclusion to Scott Chantler''s thrilling, suspenseful and masterfully told fantasy-adventure series is sure to satisfy, as loose ends are tied and vexing questions get answered. The fast pace continues right to the end, with new twists and turns and some shocking revelations, while the characters'' wit and humor continue to shine through. The high-voltage drama and bold illustrations make the books in this award-winning series popular reads, even while the complexity of the multiple plotlines enhances problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. And with so many clues cleverly revealed in the details of the artwork, these books are also terrific for developing visual literacy.

The Dark Island

The Dark Island
In this thrilling sixth installment of Scott Chantler''s popular Three Thieves graphic novel series, the separate adventures of twins Dessa and Jared play out simultaneously and seem poised to intersect as the book ends. Dessa, along with Topper and Fisk, has managed a daring landing onto the flying island of Astaroth, where she hopes to find her long-lost brother. Instead, they discover a bizarre world where three children are being held by a mysterious and rarely seen man they call the Toymaker. Certain the Toymaker is Greyfalcon, Jared''s kidnapper, Dessa is determined to track him down and confront him about her brother''s location. Meanwhile, Captain Drake has unintentionally stumbled upon Jared himself and decides to hold the boy as bait to lure Dessa to him. But as he learns from Jared the particulars about the boy''s abduction nine years ago, Drake is troubled. Why would such powerful people want to abduct a small peasant boy? The answer to that question is about to shock Drake --- and Jared! Readers of this award-winning fantasy-adventure series will be excited to find some of the pieces of the puzzle beginning to fall into place here. These fast-paced books, with loads of brilliantly depicted action scenes and just enough humor, are hugely appealing to both boys and girls. However, even as readers are getting pulled along by the high drama and exciting visuals, the complex storylines and intersecting character relationships will engage their critical thinking skills. As always, the cliffhanger ending will leave readers hungry for more.

Pirates of the Silver Coast

Pirates of the Silver Coast
In this fifth book in the Three Thieves series of graphic novels, Dessa convinces the smuggler Quinn to transport her, Topper and Fisk to the mysterious Island of Astaroth. Dessa is convinced her twin brother, Jared, who was abducted years earlier by the Queen''s chamberlain, is being held on the island. However, soon after setting sail, they are overtaken by a pirate ship commanded by the King of Pirates, whom they discover is interested in only one treasure on board: Dessa''s map to the location of Astaroth! Will Dessa''s plan for finding her brother be thwarted? Meanwhile, Captain Drake, still hot on the trail of Dessa and her cohorts, is startled when he comes face-to-face with a young boy delivering him a new horse. Why does the boy look so shockingly familiar? The titles in author-illustrator Scott Chantler''s extremely well-reviewed Three Thieves fantasy adventure series consistently deliver a fast-paced storyline and cinematic artwork that crackles with energy. Here, the twists and turns of the plot, along with further development of the characters, continue to intrigue, while the slapstick comedy and exciting action keep things rollicking and fun. This series works beautifully in the classroom for reluctant readers, both boys and girls. The illustrations give it visual appeal and provide valuable contextual clues to the meaning of the narrative, while the literary elements help develop language skills and vocabulary. Offering children graphic novels as alternatives can help foster a love of reading, and motivated readers become strong readers.

The King's Dragon

release date: Apr 01, 2014
The King's Dragon
In this fourth installment of the Three Thieves fantasy adventure series of graphic novels, Captain Drake''s quest to find Dessa, Topper and Fisk has led him to a remote healing monastery where he believes they have gone to tend Dessa''s broken leg. While pursuing his quarry, Captain Drake finds himself beset by memories of his early days as a young and idealistic knight in King Roderick''s service. Featured as flashbacks, these memories provide readers with important clues to the unfolding story, such as that the King''s Dragons were more loyal to the palace chamberlain, Maarten Greyfalcon, than to the king; that there was a mysterious letter written by the king, meant to be read only at his death, which had disappeared; and that Drake had uncovered a plot to murder the king. The tale moves forward in both the present and the past, with the flashbacks drawn in black-and-white to differentiate the time. As with the very successful and well-reviewed first three titles by award-winning cartoonist Scott Chantler, high action propels this fast-moving story forward, with sword fighting, chase scenes and a bold and daring narrow escape, while intricate plotlines full of intrigue and suspense (and occasional witty banter) keep the reader guessing. The art is dramatic and evocative, offering emotional close-ups, telling details and believable backdrops. This is a wonderful graphic novel that will engage reluctant readers, providing a painless way to dive into literature and learn about plot, character, setting and other literary devices.

The Captive Prince

The Captive Prince
Book three of the acclaimed Three Thieves graphic novel series begins with Dessa, Topper and Fisk, still on the run from the Queen''s Dragons, stopping to make camp for the night. While collecting firewood, Dessa happens upon a kidnapping and manages to boldly rescue the captive boy and bring him to safety. Once out of harm''s way, the boy reveals that he is Paladin, the crown prince of Medoria! Upon Paladin''s safe return to his kingdom, his father, King Victor the Fourth, decrees three days of celebration in tribute to the three heroes who have saved his precious only son. Dessa, Topper and Fisk know they are taking a risk by remaining in the castle for all that time, but how can they refuse the king? And to make things trickier still, is the charming prince falling for Dessa? The cinematic artwork in this series offers a fully visual experience for young readers looking for an exciting tale of adventure, told in episodes. Dessa''s derring-do is on display once again as she''s seen swinging into action to save the prince''s life (twice!), among other exploits. The fast pace alone is enough to keep young readers turning the pages. Creator Scott Chantler has also crafted a tremendously intriguing fantasy world in these books, fleshing out the intricacies a bit more with every installment. The layers and connections between characters promote critical thinking, while the masterful storytelling provides terrific opportunities for studying story components and literature.
