King of Kings

release date: Aug 05, 2025
King of Kings
From the author of the acclaimed New York Times bestseller LAWRENCE IN ARABIA a stunningly revelatory narrative history of one of the most momentous events in modern times, the jaw-dropping stupidity of the American government, and the dawn of the age of religious nationalism. On November 16th, 1977, at a state dinner in the White House, President Jimmy Carter toasted Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, King of Kings, Light of the Aryans, Shadow of God on Earth, praising his “enlightened leadership” and extolling Iran as “a stabilizing influence in that part of the world.” Iran had the world’s fifth largest army and was awash in billions of dollars in oil revenues. Construction cranes dotted the skyline of its booming capital, Tehran. The regime’s feared secret police force SAVAK had crushed communist opposition, and the Shah had bought off the conservative Muslim clergy inside the country. He seemed invulnerable, and invaluable to the United States as an ally in the Cold War. Fourteen months later the Shah fled Iran into exile, forced from the throne by a volcanic religious revolution led by a fiery cleric named Ayatollah Khomeini. How could the United States, which had one of the largest CIA stations in the world and thousands of military personnel in Iran, have been so blind? The spellbinding story Scott Anderson weaves is one of a dictator oblivious to the disdain of his subjects and a superpower blundering into disaster. The Shah emerges as a fascinating, Shakespearean character – a wannabe Richard III unaware of the depth of dissent to his rule, indecisive like Hamlet when action was called for, and at the end Lear-like as he raged against his fate. The Americans made terrible decisions at almost every juncture, from a secret pact designed by Kissinger and Nixon, to dismissing reports from the one diplomat who saw how hated the Shah was by the Iranian people (unlike almost all his colleagues, he spoke Farsi), to Jimmy Carter allowing the Shah to come to America for medical treatment, which set off the hostage crisis which forever damaged American influence in the world. Scott Anderson tells this astonishing tale with the narrative brio, mordant wit, and keen analysis that made his bestselling LAWRENCE IN ARABIA one of the key texts in understanding the modern Middle East. Based on voluminous research and dozens of interviews, KING OF KINGS is driven by penetrating portraits of the people involved – the Iranian-American doctor who convinced American officials Khomeini was a moderate; the American teacher who learned of Khomeini’s influence long before the cleric was even mentioned in official reports; the Shah’s court minister who kept a detailed diary of all their interactions; the Shah’s wife Farah who still mourns her lost kingdom; the hypocritical and misguided Jimmy Carter; and the implacable Khomeini who outmaneuvered his foes at every turn. The Iranian Revolution, Anderson convincingly argues, was as world-shattering an event as the French and Russian revolutions. In the Middle East, in India, in Southeast Asia, in Europe, and now in the United States, the hatred of economically-marginalized, religiously-fervent masses for a wealthy secular elite has led to violence and upheaval – and Iran was the template. KING OF KINGS is a bravura work of history, and a warning.

Review of Battle of Brothers
"Battle of Brothers: William and Harry: the inside story of a family in tumult'''', chronicles the ups and downs of the Prince William and Harry''s relationship, which the author says is presently at Rock bottom. For about two years the royal sibling''s relationship has been strained and both were unwilling to speak on their grievances. According to Royal Historian Robert, the inception of the feud began brewing when Prince William voiced concerns that Prince Harry and Meghan''s dating was moving too quick as opposed to Prince William who courted Kate for about nine years before proposing to her, Harry wasn''t too pleased with what his brother said and he went ahead with the wedding arrangements. For William it was the future condition of his monarchy which his whole life revolved around, while for Harry it was the adoration for the mind boggling and enthralling lady who had at last sorted out his life." His wife Meghan had her fair share of bias treatment especially from the media, given that she wasn''t a royal neither did she share same race with the royal family. Could this feud be the reason Prince Harry decided to move out from the royal family? Find out more of this controversial royal romance and what really led to the family feud by Clicking on Buy Now.

The Quiet Americans

The Quiet Americans
From the bestselling author of Lawrence in Arabia—the gripping story of four CIA agents during the early days of the Cold War—and how the United States, at the very pinnacle of its power, managed to permanently damage its moral standing in the world. “Enthralling … captivating reading.” —The New York Times Book Review At the end of World War II, the United States was considered the victor over tyranny and a champion of freedom. But it was clear—to some—that the Soviet Union was already seeking to expand and foment revolution around the world, and the American government’s strategy in response relied on the secret efforts of a newly formed CIA. Chronicling the fascinating lives of four agents, Scott Anderson follows the exploits of four spies: Michael Burke, who organized parachute commandos from an Italian villa; Frank Wisner, an ingenious spymaster who directed actions around the world; Peter Sichel, a German Jew who outwitted the ruthless KGB in Berlin; and Edward Lansdale, a mastermind of psychological warfare in the Far East. But despite their lofty ambitions, time and again their efforts went awry, thwarted by a combination of ham-fisted politicking and ideological rigidity at the highest levels of the government.

Lions Red and Gold

Lions Red and Gold
It is a time of great Endarkenment; The year, 1066.The man rode up to Harald''s camp. He had no sword. His horse, a dappled palfrey, gray and white, was meant for pretty riding in the countryside, not war. It had no barding, and this man wore naught for armor, nor had he the colors of the kingdom which he served. While dressed in noble clothes, there was neh sign nor symbol on the man to mark his origin. The horse was skittish in among the fighting men. And wary were these men upon arrival of the stranger. This, this lonely man, he spoke their languages but naught, and did not stop to make acquaintance with a single one of them. He walked his horse without a hint of nervousness or fret until he was in earshot of the principal men''s tent."King Harald, hail. Earl Tostig, hail," called out the rider. He did not dismount. These Earl and King, now summoned by a man whom no one knew, came out to speak with him."What is''t and whence ye from?" Asked Harald."I''ve now come to parley for our land," the rider then replied."Th''will be no parley," answered Tostig. "All this land be ours anon. You''ve lost already harrance .""Aye," replied the rider. "Of this, the thing is plain. This yours. You''ve won it. Killed or turned so many thegns and Earls. But still, the Crown cannot abide by blood what might by good agreement make to pass. Pray, hear our offer, Earl.""What offer have ye make?" Earl Tostig asked."The Saxon Crown doth hereby offer up the land of Umbria to Tostig, and to make him up an Earl again for perpetuity, and for his sons and sons of sons, to have this land for ever and for ever."Tostig and Hardrada took a moment to consider this."And what of Norway? What dost Harold offer up his better from the North for all this trouble?" Asked old Hardrade then. The rider made a mirthless smile. "Six feet of ground, or howsoever much he needs, for he is taller than most other men." At that, the rider turned his horse around. And then behind him, "What''s thou sayest, Tostig? Shall your men come home?"The only answers that the rider got were cursing in three languages, and backs of both the men as they returned back to their tents. And so, the rider went."Who was that brazen knave?" Asked Hardrade of his second."''Twas my brother Harold," Tostig then replied.

Fractured Lands

release date: May 02, 2017
Fractured Lands
From the bestselling author of Lawrence in Arabia, a piercing account of how the contemporary Arab world came to be riven by catastrophe since the 2003 United States invasion of Iraq. In 2011, a series of anti-government uprisings shook the Middle East and North Africa in what would become known as the Arab Spring. Few could predict that these convulsions, initially hailed in the West as a triumph of democracy, would give way to brutal civil war, the terrors of the Islamic State, and a global refugee crisis. But, as New York Times bestselling author Scott Anderson shows, the seeds of catastrophe had been sown long before. In this gripping account, Anderson examines the myriad complex causes of the region’s profound unraveling, tracing the ideological conflicts of the present to their origins in the United States invasion of Iraq in 2003 and beyond. From this investigation emerges a rare view into a land in upheaval through the eyes of six individuals—the matriarch of a dissident Egyptian family; a Libyan Air Force cadet with divided loyalties; a Kurdish physician from a prominent warrior clan; a Syrian university student caught in civil war; an Iraqi activist for women’s rights; and an Iraqi day laborer-turned-ISIS fighter. A probing and insightful work of reportage, Fractured Lands offers a penetrating portrait of the contemporary Arab world and brings the stunning realities of an unprecedented geopolitical tragedy into crystalline focus.

Lawrence in Arabia
One of the Best Books of the Year: The Christian Science Monitor NPR The Seattle Times St. Louis Post-Dispatch Chicago Tribune A New York Times Notable Book Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in Biography The Arab Revolt against the Turks in World War I was, in the words of T. E. Lawrence, “a sideshow of a sideshow.” As a result, the conflict was shaped to a remarkable degree by a small handful of adventurers and low-level officers far removed from the corridors of power. At the center of it all was Lawrence himself. In early 1914 he was an archaeologist excavating ruins in Syria; by 1917 he was riding into legend at the head of an Arab army as he fought a rearguard action against his own government and its imperial ambitions. Based on four years of intensive primary document research, Lawrence in Arabia definitively overturns received wisdom on how the modern Middle East was formed.

The Beholder's Eye

release date: Dec 01, 2007
The Beholder's Eye
A collection of the very best in contemporary first-person journalism compiled by the award-winning former Washington Post reporter and author. Great journalists, at one time or another, have all been characters in their own stories: people with personalities that shaped what they saw and reported, and were touched and changed by the experiences about which they wrote; and innovators who borrowed the storytelling techniques of fiction. The Beholder’s Eye showcases the very best of an increasing trend toward personal narrative: Mike Sager stalking Marlon Brando in the Tahitian jungle; J. R. Moehringer’s quest to discover the true identity of an old boxer; Bill Plaschke’s story about a woman with cerebral palsy who runs an obscure Los Angeles Dodgers Web site; Scott Anderson’s story of his lifetime of covering war after war; Harrington’s own tale of his interracial family’s struggle to persevere; and many others. Written by reporters who were willing to reveal themselves in order to bring readers insights that were deeper than supposedly objective third-person stories, their articles are an invaluable resource for aspiring journalists, students, and teachers of the craft of writing, and any reader with an appreciation for masterful storytelling. “Aims to dispel the old journalistic cliché: that a journalist writing about him/herself is always ‘self-indulgent and, quite likely, narcissistic.’ He couldn’t have put together a better lineup of writers to make the point that it doesn’t have to be . . . Not just some of the country’s finest personal journalism, but some of its finest journalism, period.”—Kirkus Reviews

Double Blind

Double Blind
"The onslaught in Lebanon during the months of July and August 2006 resulted in not only the deaths of over 600 Lebanese civilians but also an almost complete destruction of the country''s infrastructure: schools, roads, hospitals and homes. In total Hezbollah launched 2500 rockets into Israel, resulting in the deaths of 36 Israeli civilians, and the wounding of hundreds more. Paolo Pellegrin (Magnum Photos) and journalist Scott Anderson were in Lebanon during the conflict, on assignment for The New York Times. Pellegrin''s photographs intimately capture the fear and powerlessness of the Lebanese population in the face of the ceaseless Israeli air strikes, revealing the terror and despair of families and friends witnessing the deaths of their loved ones, whilst around them their homes were destroyed. In particular Pellegrin also documented the aftermath of the attack on the village of Qana in southern Lebanon; many of the victims children, his photographs reveal the immense suffering of the civilians involved. Alongside his work exposing the consequences of indiscriminate attacks on a civilian population is a 3000-word account by Scott Anderson, who accompanied Pellegrin in Lebanon. Pellegrin and Anderson were both wounded in a missile attack by an Israeli drone, which fired on their vehicle as they traveled through the city of Tyre. Along with the civilians of southern Lebanon, they were stranded for weeks under heavy bombing and air strikes by the IDF. The attack at Qana, also the second one to strike the village in living memory, soon after prompted the singer Patti Smith to respond in the form of a song, entitled ''Qana'', the words and music of which will form her contribution to the book." -- Amazon.com.
