Teaching the English language learners

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Teaching the English language learners
Research has shown that the number of English language learners (ELLs) in the United States is only expected to increase in years to come. Therefore, the need of trained content area teachers is immediate. Specifically, the secondary school level must have adequate training put in place for all teachers due to the fact the ELLs are, and always will be, enrolled in mainstream classrooms. There are numerous studies that show how effective teacher training programs can be for content area teachers and how useful implementing English as a second language (ESL) teaching strategies are to help ELLs reach high academic achievement. This project puts together an effective professional development plan for Comstock Park High School and Mill Creek Middle School to inform teaching staff of who ELLs are, how they learn, and what it is like to learn a second language. Additionally, the project contains several ESL teaching strategies that have been proven to be effective based on several empirical studies.

Examining the Effect of Occupational Socialization on Principals' Leadership of Physical Education Programs

Examining the Effect of Occupational Socialization on Principals' Leadership of Physical Education Programs
This study examined the occupational socialization experiences of school principals and the influence on the quality of physical education. Previous research has shown that an educator''s K-12 experiences (referred to as acculturation socialization) within physical education has a substantial impact on their professional opinions about PE and how to teach PE. To date, few studies have explored how those acculturation socialization experiences influence the leadership decisions a principal makes related to PE. The following three questions motivate this study: (1) How do principals perceive and make meaning of their acculturation experiences in PE? (2) How do those acculturation experiences influence their perceptions of PE programs? (3) How have their acculturation experiences been confirmed or denied through the various stages of socialization? This study utilized a phenomenological approach to unpack the acculturation experiences of participants and discover how those experiences influenced how they lead the PE program at their school site. The goal of this study is to discover ways to support school principals in developing high-quality physical education programs. There were 113 responses to this survey. The main conclusion drawn from this study was that the acculturation experiences of respondents did have an impact on their leadership of PE programs in their school. Those with positive experiences were more likely to make their PE programs better. Those who had negative experiences but experienced exposure to a quality PE program through training or working with a competent teacher were more likely to make their PE programs better. This research occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore those who chose to participate in this study amid the uncertainty of education may have a more positive orientation towards PE. Future research under more normal educational circumstances would extend this study and make it more generalizable.

The effect of humans on butterflies was also analyzed, and it was discovered that enthusiasts often have unexpected impacts on butterfly populations.

Quantitative in Vitro Microdialysis Sampling Coupled to HPAEC-PAD for the Monitoring of Mannan-degrading Enzymes

Quantitative in Vitro Microdialysis Sampling Coupled to HPAEC-PAD for the Monitoring of Mannan-degrading Enzymes
In vitro microdialysis sampling coupled to high performance anion exchange chromatography and pulsed amperometric detection (MD-HPAEC-PAD) is a powerful tool for carbohydrate analysis in complex matrices. Microdialysis is a sampling technique that employs a semi-permeable membrane that achieves on-line sample cleanup and in situ sampling in both in vivo and in vitro applications. The selectivity of this sampling technique is due to the molecular weight cut-off of the probe, where freely diffusing species in a sample may be transported along a concentration gradient across the membrane into a continuous perfusion flow. The collected dialysate can be assayed to develop a dynamic concentration versus time profile of the system under study. Microdialysis sampling overcomes problems associated with traditional bioprocess monitoring by eliminating the need for sample removal, enzymatic reaction quenching, and filtration steps, while also minimizing sample handling and contamination issues associated with bioprocess sampling.

An Approach for the Development and Implementation of Systems in Complex Business Contexts Through Methodology Tailoring

release date: Jan 01, 2017
An Approach for the Development and Implementation of Systems in Complex Business Contexts Through Methodology Tailoring
Systems utilised in complex business contexts commonly need to be well integrated within the business in which they operate. There is a risk of poor acceptance, adoption, and sustainment in the business if the system does not take into account key business related considerations. Utilising DePuy Orthopaedics resource management business context as a case study, an assessment of potential System Development Methodologies (SDM) that could be utilised in the development of an IT system was carried out. It was established that no single SDM could provide the level of support that was identified as required. Further investigation of system development within complex businesses ascertained that methodology tailoring is an approach utilised to ensure that methodologies incorporate business specific complexities with a subsequent aim to ensure that developed systems are fit for purpose. However, there is little proven procedural guidance that illustrates an approach towards SDM tailoring in the complex business environment of resource management for New Product Development at DePuy. There was, therefore a gap in research and an identified need for an approach that provides the appropriate level of support for SDM tailoring for the development of systems in this complex business context.Utilising the knowledge gathered within DePuy Orthopaedics, as well as from literature in the field, methods for managing business related complexities in system development were established, developed, and formalised into an approach that addressed the tailoring of SDMs. The approach was influenced by the critical evaluation of DePuy''s complex business context which aided in the creating and application of the approach. The approach was validated through its application in a business context, where it was used to develop a tailored methodology for use in developing and implementing a resource management IT system at a portfolio level. The validation proved the approach was legitimate and produced a methodology and subsequent system which were readily adopted and accepted by the company. Furthermore, the tailored methodology was evaluated by industrially based engineers with experience of systems development in a complex business context, resource management and systems engineering. From this evaluation, it was established that the tailored methodology was sound and can be said to be valid in the context that it was developed.

Improving Differential Diagnosis of Vocal Cord Dysfunction

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Improving Differential Diagnosis of Vocal Cord Dysfunction
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess whether the factors historically presented in the literature to differentiate vocal cord dysfunction (VCD) from breathing difficulties of other etiologies accurately predict and identify patients who have VCD. The researchers were also interested in whether patients with VCD have a higher risk of misdiagnosis than patients with breathing difficulties of other etiologies. Finally, the present study investigated whether patients with VCD were more likely to have their symptoms attributed to psychological factors than patients with breathing difficulties of other etiologies. Method: A survey comprised of 23 questions regarding the participants'' previous and current diagnoses, triggers that precede breathing difficulty, and whether or not the participants have ever been misdiagnosed was posted to internet support groups, websites, blogs, and forums. The final participant pool included 20 participants with VCD and 25 participants with asthma. Results: None of the factors investigated accurately differentiated participants with asthma from participants with VCD one hundred percent of the time. However, participants with VCD were more likely to report throat tightness during an attack, association of an attack with symptoms of acid reflux, and rapid resolution of symptoms without treatment. Conversely, participants with asthma were more likely to report expiratory stridor and chest tightness, full resolution of symptoms with use of asthma medications, nocturnal symptoms or symptoms just after waking, and symptoms that seemed to be triggered by environmental agents or allergens. Preliminary findings from the present study suggest that patients with VCD are both more likely to receive a misdiagnosis and have their symptoms attributed to psychological factors than participants with asthma. Conclusion: A diagnosis of VCD must be made very carefully, ideally with instrumental evaluation of the vocal mechanism during an acute "ttack" of breathing difficulty. The factors identified in the literature to differentially diagnose patients with asthma from patients with VCD do not accurately differentiate these populations. These findings suggest that continued education about the nature of VCD and differential diagnosis should be paramount to medical professionals.
