The extensive reach of mass incarceration in the United States reaches well beyond the walls of correctional facilities. One in fourteen children experience incarceration of a residential parent before they turn 18 years old, and one in two adults have experienced the incarceration of an immediate family member. Incarceration can have harmful effects on other family members'' mental health, financial and housing stability, legal system involvement, and educational outcomes. Separately, researchers and policymakers have recently turned their attention towards individuals who experience repeated, cyclical jail incarceration locally, referred to as "jail churn." Researchers typically view parental incarceration and jail churn as two distinct issues within the criminal legal system as parallel with one another, thereby overlooking the difference in experiences for families who are navigating a parent being caught in the revolving door of jail incarceration, as compared to families who have a loved one consistently in one prison. While of course, both experiences are often difficult for families to navigate, there are nuances and distinctions between the two situations. This three-chapter dissertation examines the experience of parental jail churn on three levels: 1) the individual parent, 2) the parent and child, and 3) the institutions and programs that families must navigate. The first chapter examines jail churn among parents who are incarcerated at the individual level using mixed methods. Specifically, the chapter focuses on associations between jail churn, mental health, and demographic characteristics, especially race, among incarcerated parents. The second chapter examines jail churn in the context of children and their incarcerated parents using quantitative data collected from parents regarding their children. Specifically, the chapter focuses on associations between parental jail churn, child behavioral outcomes, and demographic characteristics, especially race and gender. The third chapter examines jail churn in the context of incarcerated parents, their families, and the programs and institutions they navigate. Specifically, this chapter focuses on barriers to participation in a program to support connecting children to their incarcerated program through remote video visits and guided visit coaching. Thus, this dissertation aims to better understand the experience of jail churn among families with incarcerated parents by examining different units of analysis between individuals, families, and institutions. In doing so, this dissertation will enable research to further understand the diversity and heterogeneity of families impacted by incarceration.

Metamaterials and metasurfaces are well-studied in the scientific community. They allow for unusual material properties over a wide range of engineering applications that would not otherwise be achievable. One interesting application is electromagnetic scattering from small particles. Past manufacturing capabilities limited interest in this study. However, current manufacturing technologies allow the creation of small particles with complex metallic patterns. Finding patterns that can minimize or maximize scattering is of general interest. Unfortunately, existing general-purpose commercial software packages are not well suited to finding optimized pattern designs that have any complexity due to the long computation times. A custom computational electromagnetic algorithm developed for this purpose is thus needed.

Women still comprise a small number of full professors in STEM disciplines in research universities, which have historically been male dominated. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has recognized the challenge of getting more women to enter the professoriate, earn tenure, and advance to full professor. These women can then encourage more women to enter into STEM as educators and researchers. The purpose of this study was to recognize, explore, and depict strategies used by women full professors to overcome obstacles they faced while advancing in academic STEM fields. The study participants also offered recommendations for women faculty desiring to become full professors and university academic leaders on how to help women in STEM achieve the top academic rank. This study used a qualitative collective case design to collect data and to aid in forming an understanding of the women participants'' experiences in earning promotion from associate professor to full professor in STEM academic departments. The participants were selected using purposeful sampling. Semi-structured interviews conducted with 13 full professors in various stem fields comprised they primary source of data. A pre-survey questionnaire and review of documents provided further information for the study. The findings from the study suggest that women associate professors are motivated to seek promotion primarily because of the status, prestige, and recognition that accompanies the rank. The study''s participants offered several strategies to associate professors in how to overcome barriers blocking the path to promotion. Among these strategies were understanding promotion criteria and standards, building academic credentials, focusing on research and external funding, protecting research time, and establishing research collaborations. The participants'' principal recommendation to associate professors on how to advance to full professor was to build a national reputation, while the participants advised academic leaders to develop flexible promotion criteria and standards, provide targeted professional development workshops for associate professors, encourage the availability of mentors and advocates, facilitate faculty collaborations, and better accommodate work-life balance for women faculty.

One way the toxinantitoxin ratio is regulated is by the Lon family of proteases, which degrade the antitoxin protein. Homologs to Lon have been identified in D. radiodurans. D. radiodurans is a model organism for studying persistent state as colonies composed of persister cells appear markedly different than wild-type. We also altered the levels of persisters in the population by deleting the Lon homologs in D. radiodurans which decreased the toxinantitoxin ratio, this prevented persister formation, and increased sensitivity to antibiotics. These results demonstrate that the MazEF toxin-antitoxin system plays a role in persistence in D. radiodurans as in E. coli. The involvement of the two D. radiodurans homologs in persistence is also established. Persistence mechanisms appear to be conserved broadly across the domain Bacteria.

Inadequate parental monitoring is widely recognized as a risk factor for the development of child and adolescent conduct problems. However, the majority of previous studies examining parental monitoring have largely measured parental knowledge, the outcome of parental monitoring, during middle and later adolescence. Therefore, it is unclear how parental monitoring (defined as parental solicitation and control) develops over time and what relationship this parenting behavior has with child and adolescent conduct problems. This study examined data from the Fast Track project, a multisite longitudinal study aimed at the development and prevention of conduct problems in children at-risk for these behaviors. Latent trajectory modeling (LTM) was used to examine growth in parental monitoring from Grades 4-5 and 7-11 as well as several proposed antecedents of this parenting behavior. The longitudinal relationship between parental monitoring and child conduct problems was examined through bivariate LTMs and ALT models. There was little average growth in parental solicitation and control in these data, but evidence for significant variability in initial levels of, and growth in, these parenting behaviors was identified. Higher levels of parental solicitation and lower levels of parental control were associated with lower levels of child conduct problems. Evidence of bidirectional associations between parental solicitation (per child report) and child conduct problems was also identified. Moderation findings indicated that parental monitoring is particularly difficult to implement effectively in high-risk neighborhoods. Several early childhood antecedents of parental monitoring were also identified, suggesting potential targets for clinical interventions aimed at reducing child conduct problems.

This action research project was conducted to determine whether positive reinforcement would improve student attitudes toward reading. The study took place in a third grade, low-level reading class. Prior to the study many students had exhibited a lack of motivation to read. Probable causes for their negative attitude toward reading included the ability to read fluently, previous reading experiences, or their own self-confidence. For this study fourteen students were monitored for six weeks. During that time the students'' reading scores, attitudes, and motivation were noted daily using an action research journal. Three types of positive reinforcement were used: verbal, written and extrinsic awards. The findings of the study indicated that students'' attitudes toward reading improved when positive reinforcement was used in the classroom. Students chose to read for pleasure, became excited, and eager to share what they have read with others.
