In this prose work, Biographia Literaria, Coleridge succeeds for the first and (so far) for the last time in English criticism in marrying the twin studies of philosophy and literature, developing his distinction between fancy and imagination. He does this not simply by writing about both within a single book, but by discovering a casual link between the two in the century-old preoccupation of English critics with the theory of the poet''s imagination. Besides essays on literary criticism, the book also contains a discussion of the distinction between reason and understanding, an explanation of Coleridge''s concept of a "willing suspension of disbelief," a severe critical analysis of Wordsworth''s poetry, and detailed portions of the philosophies of Kant, Schelling and Fichte.

Long central to the canon of British Romantic literature, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth’s Lyrical Ballads is a fascinating case study in the history of poetry, publishing, and authorship. This Broadview edition is the first to reprint both the 1798 and the 1800 editions of Lyrical Ballads in their entirety. In the appendices to this Broadview edition, reviews, correspondence, and a selection of contemporary verse and prose situate the work within the popular and experimental literature of its time, and allow readers to trace the work’s transformations in response to the pressures of the literary marketplace.

The story of Biographia Literaria begins in a conversation between two friends, Wordsworth and Coleridge, both settled in the Lake District after their return from Germany in 1799. They were debating what form a second edition of the Lyrical Ballads should take to replace the exhausted edition of 1798. In the course of a walk the idea of replacing the brief Advertisement by a critical Preface was conceived. In the aged memory of Wordsworth many years after, the idea and indeed the very substance of the Preface as he came to write it were all Coleridge''s. ''I have never cared a straw about the theory,'' he wrote impatiently on the manuscript of Barron Fields biography of him, ''and the Preface was written at the request of Mr. Coleridge out of sheer good nature. I recollect the very spot, a deserted quarry in the Vale of Grasmere, where he pressed the thing upon me, and but for that it would never have been thought of.'' By 1815, of course, when he came to write the Biographia, the Preface was ''Wordsworth'' and the Biographia Coleridge''s reply to Wordsworth but the simplification is much too crude. It poses and tries to answer two closely connected questions: first, what relation should the language of poetry bear to that of ordinary life? And secondly, what relation should the subject of poetry bear to itself? (The order in which the questions are put look irrational, but it is Wordsworth''s own order and there are good reasons for it.) The answers of the Preface are ''the real language of men in a state of vivid sensation'' and ''the incidents of common life.'' These two questions, or rather Coleridge''s attempt to modify and clarify the old answers to them, are together the central theme of the second half of the Biographia.

This is the third and final part of the Wallenstein trilogy by German playwright and mastermind Friedrich Schiller. The work as a whole produced a profound impression, and it is certainly Schiller''s masterpiece in dramatic literature. He brings out with extraordinary vividness the ascendency of Wallenstein over the wild troops whom he has gathered around him, and at the same time we are made to see how the mighty general''s schemes must necessarily end in ruin, not merely because a plot against him is skilfully prepared by vigilant enemies, but because he himself is lulled into a sense of security by superstitious belief in his supposed destiny as revealed to him by the stars. Wallenstein is the most subtle and complex of Schiller''s dramatic conceptions, and it taxes the powers of the greatest actors to present an adequate rendering of the motives which explain his strange and dark career. The love-story of Max Piccolomini and Thekla is in its own way not less impressive than the story of Wallenstein with which it is interwoven. This is the bilingual edition of this literary masterpiece including the English and German versions of the play.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner relates the experiences of a sailor who has returned from a long sea voyage. The mariner stops a man who is on his way to a wedding ceremony and begins to narrate a story. The wedding-guest''s reaction turns from bemusement to impatience to fear to fascination as the mariner''s story progresses, as can be seen in the language style.
