The Farmer and the Dolphin

release date: Jun 28, 2018
The Farmer and the Dolphin
At Garden City Beach, S.C., where no one seemed to hurry, the first indication of trouble was the staccato rumble of footsteps on the stairs. A sharp knock at the door came next. And when 86-year-old Betty Mincey opened up she faced law officers wearing guns. Three men, two from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and a federal agent from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, had come to investigate the report of a dead dolphin taken in a net set by her husband in front of the Mincey house that morning, Nov. 3, 2013. After questioning 86-year-old World War II Navy veteran C.P. Mincey, the officers told him he had violated the Marine Mammal Protection Act which cites the illegal taking of a dolphin as a federal offense. The accompanying S.C. DNR officer told him he had also broken state laws in setting and observing the net. Mincey’s explanation that he had made no attempt to take the dolphin found dead earlier that morning in his lightweight mesh net did not appear to matter to the officers. They charged the South Carolina farmer with killing a dolphin and his fine was eventually set at $6500. The events at Garden City marked the opening stage of a 15-month-long battle between the Mincey family and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Join South Carolina author William Walker for an in-depth, entertaining behind-the-scenes account of how Mincey, with the support of Latta S.C., attorneys LaFon LeGette and Alan Berry, won his case in a contentious federal hearing at Georgetown, S.C.

(I Just) Died in Your Arms
Hitting the charts only once isn''t just unfortunate...it''s a crime. Over the decades, tons of musical artists and groups have had a hit song that has lived on long after the tune topped the charts and is often looked upon fondly for decades to come. These are affectionately known as "one-hit wonders," and are much celebrated by fans and music publications, particularly on September 25th each year on One-Hit Wonder Day. 12 of today''s best short story authors have taken their favorite one-hit wonders and reimagined them as the influence for some pretty heinous crimes. (I Just) Died in Your Arms features a decades-spanning collection of immediately recognizable hit songs turned into stories from the amazing talents of Vinnie Hansen, Jeanne DuBois, Josh Pachter, J.M. Taylor, Christine Verstraete, Sandra Murphy, Joseph S. Walker, Wendy Harrison, Bev Vincent, Leone Ciporin, Adam Gorgoni and Barb Goffman.

A World of Change

release date: Apr 05, 2018
A World of Change
Anne S Walker grew up in the dormitories of a boarding school in the suburbs of Melbourne. Her initial career was as an early childhood teacher, then she sailed to England and worked as a community activist in London. Accepting an offer to work in Fiji, she became deeply involved for 11 years in early childhood education, women’s human rights, and public affairs advocacy, including the fight against nuclear testing in the Pacific. Those years led her to undertake graduate study in development communications in the USA, following which she was asked to help establish the International Women’s Tribune Centre in New York. This thrust her into the centre of a global campaign for women’s human rights that spanned the next three decades. From the IWTC headquarters opposite the United Nations, Anne and her colleagues met and worked alongside women from every world region on issues affecting their lives and the lives of their communities. Anne and the IWTC were involved in the historic series of UN world conferences on women held in various countries from 1975 to 1995. As well as writing of her work and the role of the IWTC in those momentous decades, Anne tells the powerful stories of some of the women she met at meetings, workshops and other events in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, the Caribbean and Latin America. She also tells of witnessing and living through some of the toughest times in New York’s history, from the moments when planes crashed into the World Trade Centre towers on September 11, 2001. This is an important memoir that takes readers inside the world of women fighting for justice and for an equal place at the tables where global policies and programs are developed and implemented.
