Abstract: Background: Suicide is a global public health problem. Digital interventions are considered a low-threshold treatment option for people with suicidal ideation or behaviors. Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) targeting suicidal ideation has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing suicidal ideation. However, suicidal ideation often is related to additional mental health problems, which should be addressed for optimal care. Yet, the effects of iCBT on related symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, and hopelessness, remain unclear. Objective: We aimed to analyze whether digital interventions targeting suicidal ideation had an effect on related mental health symptoms (depression, anxiety, and hopelessness). Methods: We systematically searched CENTRAL, PsycInfo, Embase, and PubMed for randomized controlled trials that investigated guided or unguided iCBT for suicidal ideation or behaviors. Participants reporting baseline suicidal ideation were eligible. Individual participant data (IPD) were collected from eligible trials. We conducted a 1-stage IPD meta-analysis on the effects on depression, anxiety, and hopelessness--analyzed as 2 indices: symptom severity and treatment response. Results: We included IPD from 8 out of 9 eligible trials comprising 1980 participants with suicidal ideation. iCBT was associated with significant reductions in depression severity (b=−0.17; 95% CI −0.25 to −0.09; P.001) and higher treatment response (ie, 50% reduction of depressive symptoms; b=0.36; 95% CI 0.12-0.60; P=.008) after treatment. We did not find significant effects on anxiety and hopelessness.br

Abstract: Question Digital interventions based on cognitive-behavioural therapy (iCBT) is associated with reductions in suicidal ideation. However, fine-grained analyses of effects and potential effect-moderating variables are missing. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of iCBT on suicidal ideation, effect moderators, effects on suicide attempts and predictors of adherence. Study selection and analysis We systematically searched CENTRAL, PsycINFO, Embase and PubMed for randomised controlled trials that investigated iCBT for suicidal ideation or behaviours. Participants reporting baseline suicidal ideation were eligible. We conducted a one-stage individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis. Suicidal ideation was the primary outcome, analysed as three indices: severity of suicidal ideation, reliable changes and treatment response. Findings We included IPD from nine out of ten eligible trials (2037 participants). iCBT showed significant reductions of suicidal ideation compared with control conditions across all indices (severity: b=−0.247, 95% CI −0.322 to −0.173; reliable changes: b=0.633, 95% CI 0.408 to 0.859; treatment response: b=0.606, 95% CI 0.410 to 0.801). In iCBT, the rate of reliable improvement was 40.5% (controls: 27.3%); the deterioration rate was 2.8% (controls: 5.1%). No participant-level moderator effects were identified. The effects on treatment response were higher for trials with waitlist-controls compared with active controls. There were insufficient data on suicide attempts. Human support and female gender predicted treatment adherence. The main source of potential bias was missing outcome data. Conclusions The current evidence indicates that iCBT is effective in reducing suicidal ideation irrespective of age, gender and previous suicide attempts. Future studies should rigorously assess suicidal behaviour and drop-out reasons

This thesis explores the sociological underpinnings of generation by drawing on Mannheim’s theory of generations and applying the concept as an explanative force in long-term societal change. Individuals of the same cohort and national culture make for a generation location; they share a similar parameter of experience within the stream of history. As individuals collectively enter into the formative years of adolescence, significant Imprint Events can forge a bond between them in terms of mindset and worldview (Habitus), which endure over the life course. This group of individuals, as a result, develop a generational consciousness that is distinct from other groups who had different generation locations and formative imprints. When that group interacts with elements of their social order through the lens of their distinct generational consciousness, they truly become a social generation. Social generations are not monolithic, however, and separate generation units can emerge when individuals respond to the same formative circumstances in different ways. Some generation units are so prominent or vocal that their response, despite being one of many, is perceived as the perspective of the generation; these units tend to define the legacy of that generation. Through actualizing their generational consciousness in ways both intentional and unintentional, grand and minuscule, a generation acts upon the social process, creating social change or maintaining the status quo. Younger generations, because they are less socialized and routinized by the present configuration of society, are more likely to drive social change. Because new generations emerge with their own consciousness and create change in the image of that consciousness, the ceaseless process of generation succession can be viewed as a driving force of history.

I became diagnosed with COVID-19 and was ordered to quarantine for two weeks in the spring of 2020. Using autoethnography, this thesis provides a personal illness narrative about my experience with COVID-19. The narrative is structured and explores a timeline of dates and events through journal entries with descriptions of my experience while undergoing quarantine. Themes based on the evolution of my experience emerged from my story: contentment, apprehension, astonishment, seclusion, bewilderment, physical pain, and convalescence.

Highly migratory and diadromous fishes present an array of challenges to fisheries managers. This is particularly true when stocks extend across management borders and occupy multiple management jurisdictions. It is valuable for managers to be able to separate fish populations into sub populations and spawning populations because it allows them to allocate sustainable harvest regulations. One popular method of achieving this is the use of otolith microchemistry. Otoliths are paired mechanosensory structures found in the teleost inner ear that help with hearing, balance, and environmental orientation. The same biogeochemical properties that allow otoliths to serve their respective physiological functions allow researchers to make quantitative inferences concerning population diversity, movements, and various other aspects of life history. Here, the species of interest is the Hickory Shad (Alosa mediocris (Mitchell 1814). The Hickory Shad is an anadromous clupeid found in Atlantic coastal systems. During the spring, Hickory Shad migrate inshore to spawn in freshwater where they are a popular target of a multimillion-dollar sport fishery. While the Hickory Shad represents a significant economic asset, little is known about its life history. The current management strategy for Hickory Shad groups it with three other native anadromous clupeids, and management decisions rely on the assumption that Hickory Shad and American Shad (Alosa sapidissima) may have similar life histories. However, the extent to which this represents the actual life history is unknown. For instance, it is assumed that like American Shad, Hickory Shad exhibit natal homing. Yet expression of natal homing has never been confirmed in Hickory Shad The overall goal of this study was to determine if otolith microchemistry could be used to discriminate spawning stocks of Hickory Shad. Hickory Shad were captured in 26 locations within 18 major rivers along the known spawning range. LA-ICP-MS was used to quantify seven elements (Mg, Mn, Cu, Zn, Sr, Ba, and Pb) along a continuous transect that ran from the ventral to dorsal edge through the otolith core, resulting in a time resolved model of the environmental exposure history of each fish. Hickory Shad captured in the same locations frequently had similar element profiles distinct from other capture locations, which immediately suggested natal homing. To test this hypothesis quantitatively, a combination of Bayesian inference and unsupervised learning techniques were used to estimate the natal river element signature of each fish and determine if it was similar in Hickory Shad captured in the same location. A hidden Markov model was fit to the strontium profile of each otolith to identify the initial transition between the natal freshwater river and euryhaline environments, and average element ratios within the first regime were assumed to be estimates of each natal river element signature. Since the origin of each natal river signature was unknown, a Gaussian mixture model was used to estimate the number of mixture distributions (i.e., clusters) present in the data and assign Hickory Shad to each cluster under a probabilistic paradigm. In most cases, between 50% and 100% of Hickory Shad captured in the same location were assigned to the same cluster, indicating that they had similar natal watershed element signatures.
