This book had some really nice Christmas stories from the time of King James of England and a story placed near Trenton New Jersey in 1776, during the American Revolution. This is a wonderful book to see Christmas through the ages. Ruth Sawyer (1880 - 1970) was an American storyteller and a writer of fiction and non-fiction for children and adults. She may be best known as the author of Roller Skates, which won the 1937 Newbery Medal. She received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award in 1965 for her lifetime achievement in children''s literature. Sawyer''s first book was an adult novel, The Primrose Ring. It appeared in 1915 and was made into a silent film in 1917, starring Mae Murray and an uncredited Loretta Young in her film debut as a fairy. The next year Sawyer published her first book for children, This Way to Christmas. The story is about a young boy--based on her son, David--whose parents go on a trip and leave him in the care of an Irish couple, Joanna and Barney.

During WWI, one Christmas, a young boy finds himself stranded in a snowed-in hill community in upstate New York, and finds himself experiencing a Christmas he is not accustomed to. He meets a "locked-out fairy" who introduces him to equally lonely neighbours, all of whom were also spending the winter far from home, and each tells him a personal story of the Christmas season. Some stories the neighbours heard in their native homelands long ago. A final celebration brings all the neighbours of different nationalities together, forging relationships that will outlast the holiday season and sending a message of hope to a war-torn world. The Primrose Ring is a novel by Ruth Sawyer, an American storyteller and a writer of fiction and non-fiction for children and adults. The book was published first in 1915 and illustrated by Fanny Munsell. This was Sawyer''s first published novel. The story tells about the inhabitants of the charity hospital, a particular group of kids from ward C, where only incurable patients dwell. Yet, the hospital workers make a present to little patients by organizing the "miracle trip" to the "fairyland" on May Eve, which is the one day that fairies walk the Earth.

Leerie is a book by Ruth Sawyer, who is best known for her books "The Way of the Storyteller," "Roller Skates," and "The Wee Christmas Cabin of Carn-na-ween." Born in Boston in 1880, Ruth Sawyer was an American writer of children''s books.. She studied folklore and storytelling at Columbia University, where she earned a B.S. in 1904. Ruth Sawyer''s first published work was The Primrose Ring in 1915, of which a movie was made in 1917 (starring Loretta Young). Her best-known book is Roller Skates, which won her the Newbery Medal in 1937. Like Roller Skates, a number of Sawyer''s books are autobiographical accounts of her childhood and reveal an interesting perspective on American life at the end of the 19th century. These include The Year of Jubilo and Daddles, The Story of a Plain Hound-Dog. Sawyer also wrote non-autobiographical novels for children, such as The Enchanted Schoolhouse and The Year of the Christmas Dragon , and a scholarly work, The Way of the Storyteller. She published a number of collections of folktales, such as This Way To Christma s(which featured an illustration by a young Norman Rockwell) and My Spain: A Storyteller''s Year of Collecting (1967). In 1965, Ruth Sawyer was awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for her work.
