"In her work as an appellate judge, Justice Ginsburg translated this devotion into a jurisprudence focused on "We the People," substantively and procedurally. Substantively, Justice Ginsburg insisted that faithfully employed, the words of the Constitution supported an expansive understanding of who was included in "We the People," despite the framers'' narrow understanding of the phrase when it appeared in the preamble to the Constitution. Expressed also as a jurisprudence of equality and opportunity, Justice Ginsburg believed that the phrase promised equal dignity for people despite their gender, gender identity, race, or disability. Procedurally, "We the People" shaped Justice Ginsburg''s approach to the process of deciding cases, guiding every step of her judicial process-the way she read the Constitution and statutes, approached voting issues, and analyzed the demands of the separation of powers, for example. While the substantive contours of "We the People" have received the most attention, the full sweep of her jurisprudence appears also in the process she used in analyzing all issues. Justice Ginsburg''s jurisprudence of "We the People" became the ordering principle of this book, explaining both the book''s title and its topics. Tracing the long history of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s work for gender equality and a “more perfect Union” In the fall of 2019, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg visited the University of California, Berkeley School of Law to deliver the first annual Herma Hill Kay Memorial Lecture in honor of her friend, the late Herma Hill Kay, with whom Ginsburg had coauthored the very first casebook on sex-based discrimination in 1974. Justice, Justice Thou Shalt Pursue is the result of a period of collaboration between Ginsburg and Amanda L. Tyler, a Berkeley Law professor and former Ginsburg law clerk. During Justice Ginsburg''s visit to Berkeley, she told her life story in conversation with Tyler. In this collection, the two bring together that conversation and other materials—many previously unpublished—that share details from Justice Ginsburg''s family life and long career. In the spirit of professional growth, the School of Law sponsors the Vincent S. Dalsimer Moot Court Competition each year. This provides students the opportunity to develop the skills of appellate practice, brief writing, and oral argument. Pepperdine''s Moot Court Competition is named for the Honorable Vincent S. Dalsimer, who has served in the capacity of Dean and Associate Dean of the School of Law and is retired from the California State Court of Appeal. Throughout his distinguished career as an attorney, jurist, and legal educator, Justice Dalsimer has been actively involved in the training of trial and appellate advocates. The participants consist of 2nd and 3rd year law students. Each of the 2-person teams has submitted a written brief which has been evaluated and assigned a grade prior to the oral arguments. Brief scores will account for 33% of the score for the preliminary rounds. Each team has argued one preliminary round representing the petitioner and one preliminary round representing the respondent. The top 8 teams presented arguments again in rounds representing both the petitioner and respondent. The teams competed on a single elimination basis culminating in the final round being argued before a 3-judge panel at 2:00 p.m. on February 9, 2002, at the Odell McConnell Law Center.
