Am 14. September 1914 wird Jan vierzehn Jahre alt. Doch keine Sekunde denkt er an seinen Geburtstag. Denn deutsche Kanoniere besetzen sein polnisches Heimatdorf. Sein Vater kämpft auf der Seite der Russen, seine Mutter ist tot. Notgedrungen schließt sich Jan den Deutschen an. Er erlebt Not und Elend, aber auch echte Freundschaft. Und mehr als ein Mal rettet er den Männern das Leben. Für seinen mutigen Einsatz wird ihm sogar die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft in Aussicht gestellt. Doch das Grauen des Krieges treibt Jan zu einem anderen Entschluss: Er desertiert
