release date: Nov 05, 2019
American Science Fiction: Four Classic Novels 1960-1966 (LOA #321)
In a deluxe collector’s edition, four classic science fiction novels from the genre’s most transformative decade—including the landmark Flowers for Algernon This volume, the first of a two-volume set gathering the best American science fiction from the tumultuous 1960s, opens with Poul Anderson’s immensely popular The High Crusade, in which aliens planning to conquer Earth land in Lincolnshire during the Hundred Years’ War. In Clifford Simak’s Hugo Award-winning Way Station, Enoch Wallace is a spry 124-year-old Civil War veteran whose lifelong job monitoring the intergalactic pit stop inside his home is largely uneventful—until a CIA agent shows up and Cold War hostilities threaten the peaceful harmony of the Galactic confederation. Daniel Keyes’s beloved Flowers for Algernon—winner of the Nebula Award and adapted as the Academy Award-winning movie Charly—is told through the journal entries of Charlie Gordon, a young man with severe learning disabilities who is the test subject for surgery to improve his intelligence. And in the postapocalyptic earthscape of Roger Zelazny’s Hugo Award-winning . . . And Call Me Conrad (also published as This Immortal) Conrad Nomikos reluctantly accepts the responsibility of showing the planet to the governing extraterrestrials’ representative and protecting him from rebellious remnants of the human race. Using early manuscripts and original setting copy, this Library of America volume restores the novel to a version that most closely approximates Zelazny’s original text.

This Immortal
“Vivid and elliptical... If you''ve ever asked yourself what would have happened if Philip Marlowe had been Odysseus... here is a clue to the answer.” —New Worlds THE HUGO AWARD-WINNING FIRST NOVEL EVER WRITTEN BY THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE CHRONICLES OF AMBER! Conrad Nomikos has a long, rich personal history that he''d rather not talk about. And, as Arts Commissioner, he''s been given a job he''d rather not do. Escorting an alien grandee on a guided tour of the shattered remains of Earth is not something he relishes-especially when it is apparent that this places him at the center of high-level intrigue that has some bearing on the future of Earth itself! "Roger Zelazny [was] the compleat New Wave author, so daring he could pen nothing without perturbing some creaky icon... so strong a writer, so moving in the sweep of his plots and imagery."—David Brin

Damnation Alley (LIB)

release date: Dec 15, 2014
Damnation Alley (LIB)
Hell Tanner isn''t the sort of guy you''d mistake for a hero: he''s a fast-driving car thief, a smuggler, and a stone-cold killer. He''s also expendable - at least in the eyes of the Secretary of Traffic for the Nation of California. Tanner doesn''t care much for those eyes. You''d also never mistake Hell Tanner for a humanitarian. Facing life in prison for his various crimes, he''s given a choice; rot away his remaining years in a tiny jail cell, or drive cross-country and deliver a case of antiserum to the plague-ridden people of Boston, Massachusetts...if anyone is still alive there to receive it, that is. The chance of a full pardon does wonders for getting his attention. And don''t mistake this mission of mercy for any kind of normal road trip - not when there are radioactive storms, hordes of carniverous beasts, and giant, mutated scorpions to be found along every deadly mile between Los Angeles and the East Coast. But then, this is no normal part of America, you see. This is DAMNATION ALLEY... Roger Zelazny''s post-apocalypse novel predates the George Peppard-Jan-Michael Vincent movie vehicle by about a decade and represents the fine storytelling talents of one of science fiction and fantasy''s most daring writers (likely best remembered for his imaginative Amber series). Speaking of vehicles: the coolest part of the movie--and likely, thankfully, the only part most people remember--turns out to be even cooler in the book: the flame-spewing, .50-caliber-bullet-belching, grenade-throwing, gigantic all-terrain vehicle that''s responsible for getting a crucial antiserum shipment from Los Angeles to Boston to stop a deadly plague. The driver, a despicable lowlife named Hell Tanner, has been given a not-so-difficult choice. He can either get the drugs to the East Coast intact, save humanity, and receive a full pardon for his crimes, or he can refuse and spend the rest of his life in a "zebra suit." So what''s the catch? Thanks to World War III, Middle America is now an electrical-storm-torn, heavily irradiated playground for dino-sized Gila monsters, "freak spiders," humongous bats "that eat off the mutie fruit trees down Mexico way," and 120-foot-long snakes as big around as garbage cans. And the native humans still scrambling around the wasteland aren''t much less dangerous.

ufeffTHE SEQUEL TO CHANGELING “With Samuel R. Delany and Harlan Ellison, [Roger Zelazny was] a leading and representative figure of the American new wave sf that urged a shift of emphasis from the external world of the hard sciences to the internal worlds explorable through disciplines like psychology, sociology, linguistics, and the like.” —THE SCIENCE FICTION ENCYCLOPEDIA The people had long suffered under Det Morson’s power . . . lived in terror of his dragons and other minions. When, at last, the wizard Mor joined the fight, Det and his infamous Rondoval castle were destroyed. But the victory was not complete, for the conquerors found a baby amidst the rubble: Det’s son, Pol. Unwilling to kill the child, Mor took him to a world where the ways of magic were considered mere legends—a world called Earth. But the laws of symmetry demanded that Mor take a baby from the other world to replace young Pol Detson, and that child would also remain ignorant of his rightful heritage. As the child—Mark Marakson, born Daniel Chain—matured, he displayed a gift for making mechanical gadgets that soon gave way to a variety of unnatural devices that frightened his neighbors . . . On Earth, Pol Detson grew to become Daniel Chain, a nightclub guitarist possessing mental energies he doesn’t understand. But those mental abilities will soon determine his fate in a terrifying clash of power . . . on a world which, as yet, he knows nothing about.

Psycho Shop
ufeff“A dark acid curio, brisk, fast, memorable, a rare improvisational duet from two of our best.”—Greg Bear “Alfred Bester was one of the handful of writers who invented modern science fiction.” —Harry Harrison, author of Adventures of the Stanless Steel Rat “Let there be light, and let there always be Roger Zelazny.”—Philip José Farmer, author of To Your Scattered Bodies Go From Publishers Weekly: This odd novel, left incomplete when Bester died in 1987, was finished by Zelazny, who himself died in 1995. In his introduction, Bear refers to Bester (The Deceivers) and Zelazny (Donnerjack) as masters of SF jazz, geniuses of improvisation, and the book has that feel to it. The plot is full of bizarre twists and turns. Neat ideas surface and disappear in an eyeblink and characters transform radically from one page to the next. Alf Noir, an investigative reporter, is sent to Rome to look into the mysterious Black Place of the Soul-Changer and its enigmatic proprietor, Adam Maser. Alf discovers that Maser is a Psychbroker, a sort of pawnbroker of the spirit, dealing in emotions, talents and psychological traits. Want more courage, the ability to see into the infrared, an understanding of ancient Persian? Maser will trade it to you for your mind-reading ability, or a rare coin, or perhaps for the secret of the collective unconscious. Alf discovers that Maser isn''t human, but a highly evolved cat from the far future. Nothing is what it seems and no one can be trusted, not even Maser''s sexy assistant, an evolved snake with whom Alf has an affair. There''s much fun to be had here, but the book doesn''t represent either writer in top form. Bester''s style in the first part of the novel seems dated, and things don''t gel until Zelazny takes over halfway through the book. Vintage has brought Bester''s finest work back into print, and for this it deserves praise, but this novel is most likely to appeal to Zelazny''s much larger readership.
