The Tomorrow People: Changes

release date: Jan 11, 2024
The Tomorrow People: Changes
Changes is a novel set in the universe of The Tomorrow People, and is written by Andy Davidson, with Roger Price - the creator and writer of the original series. A decade has passed since teen pop sensation Gabriel burst onto the scene. Rescued from the shattered ruins of a city devastated by alien invaders, the plight of the golden-haired orphan with the face - and voice - of an angel burned brightly for a decade, winning legions of devoted fans across the world. Though Gabriel has grown tired. Not with the wealth or the adulation, but with the constant struggle to undo the terrible consequences his single moment''s hesitation unleashed upon the people of Earth many years ago. But tonight, the Tomorrow People of every generation are coming to join the struggle for humanity''s future... ...By trying to change its past. "When Andy sent me the manuscript, which he wrote from my detailed treatment, my response was that I was humbled; I could never have written anything this good!" - Roger Price

The Economic Modernisation of France

release date: Jan 26, 2022
The Economic Modernisation of France
First published in 1975, The Economic Modernisation of France presents the study of economic developments in France between 1730 and 1880. This period is conceived as one of growth in production within pre-industrial economic structures, succeeded from 1840-50 by rapid structural transformation and the creation of an industrial economy. Divided into four major parts it discusses themes like communication and the development of commerce; agriculture; industrial development; and population. Rich in primary sources, this will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of French history, European history, economic history, and history in general.

A Social History of Nineteenth-Century France

release date: Dec 24, 2021
A Social History of Nineteenth-Century France
First published in 1987, A Social History of Nineteenth-Century France argues that the social impact of the French Revolution has been greatly exaggerated, and that in 1815 France was still predominantly a rural and pre-industrial society. The revolution introduced only very limited changes in social structures and relationships – the daily lives of ordinary people remained virtually unchanged. A much more decisive turning point in French history, the author suggests, was the period of structural change in economy and society, which began in the mid nineteenth century. The first part of the book looks at many changes in the economy and their effect on living standards and social environment. The second part identifies the social groups which make up French society and provides detailed analyses of their lifestyles and social relationships. Part Three considers the influence of such key institutions as churches, schools, and the state. Drawing on an exceptionally wide range of primary sources, this is likely to be the definitive overview of French society for many years to come and will be of interest to researchers of French history and European history.

Understanding Cross-cultural Management
Given the global nature of business today and the increasing diversity within the workforce of so many industries and organisations, a cross-cultural component in management education and training has become essential. The 4th edition of Understanding Cross-Cultural Management has been adapted in line with the feedback from our many readers, and boasts new case study material based on recent research, as well as a stronger focus on Asian cultures, thereby providing more non-Western examples.

Religious Renewal in France, 1789-1870

release date: Dec 04, 2017
Religious Renewal in France, 1789-1870
This book provides a study of the manner in which the Roman Catholic Church in France responded to successive revolutions between 1789 and 1870 as well as to the cultural upheaval associated with accelerating socio-economic change. It focuses on the Church as an institution engaged in a dynamic process of (re)Christianization and determined, as the only repository of the true faith of Jesus Christ, to fortify belief , and to combat the ‘Satanic’ forces of moral corruption and revolutionary chaos and create a ‘counter society’, the société parfaite. Discussion of the Church as an institution in crisis, of the recruitment, instruction and mind-sets of its bishops, parish clergy, and the members of religious orders, of its hierarchical structures and internal discipline, and of the need to compensate for the losses suffered during a period of revolutionary upheaval, provides the basis for an exploration of its evolving doctrine(s) and sense of purpose; for an assessment of the pastoral care provided to parish communities; and of the leadership and moral qualities of the clergy; before final consideration of the reception of the religious message(s).

The Church and the State in France, 1789-1870

release date: Nov 11, 2017
The Church and the State in France, 1789-1870
This book explores the responses of the Roman Catholic Church to the French Revolution beginning in 1789, to the liberal revolution in 1830, and particularly the democratic revolution of 1848 in France, and asks how these events were perceived and explained. Informed by the collective memory of the first revolution, how did the Church react to renewed ‘catastrophe’? How did it seek to influence political choice? Why did authoritarian government prove to be so attractive? This is a study of the impact of religion on political behaviour, as well as of the politicisation of religion. Roger Price employs the methodology of the social and cultural historian to explain the development and interaction of two key institutions, Church and State, during a period of political and social upheaval. Drawing on a wide range of archival and printed primary sources, as well as secondary literature, this book analyses the diverse perceptions of people with power and the impact of their decisions, and the responses, of a wide range of individuals and communities.

The Modernization of Rural France

release date: Jul 06, 2017
The Modernization of Rural France
This book, first published in 1983, is a major contribution to our understanding of how and why French rural peasant society became modernised by radical changes in the communications system – in particular, the coming of the railways. The author argues that complex changes in the transport systems, and their effects on agricultural market structures, finally brought traditional French rural civilisation to an end. With the extension of commercialisation, and the widening of horizons, new economic and social structures – and changed attitudes – rapidly came into being. Writing as an economic historian, the author has adopted an interdisciplinary approach to this study which incorporates economic, sociological, historical and geographical methods and data.

Documents on the Second French Empire, 1852-1870

release date: Jul 20, 2015
Documents on the Second French Empire, 1852-1870
In December 1851, Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte seized power in a coup d''état, believing he was destined to rule France and restore her to her former glory. He was committed to the modernisation of France through significant infrastructure investment and urban renewal. Although he felt pressured to make concessions to liberal, clerical and republican opposition from 1860, he remained determined to retain substantial power over foreign and defence policy. This would prove to be his undoing. In 1870, the Empire created by a military coup ended with a catastrophic military defeat, dramatically changing the balance of power in Europe. Documents on the Second French Empire presents students with a range of primary sources, covering the political, social and economic history of the era. The documents in each chapter are contextualised by an introduction from the author, and are grouped by theme, making them easy to navigate and analyse.
