Una sala di specchi

release date: Oct 11, 2024

The Eye You See with

The Eye You See with
The definitive collection of nonfiction--from war reporting to literary criticism to the sharpest political writing--from the "legend of American letters" (Vanity Fair) Robert Stone was a singular American writer, a visionary whose award-winning novels--including Dog Soldiers, Outerbridge Reach, and Damascus Gate--earned him comparisons to literary lions ranging from Samuel Beckett to Ernest Hemingway to Graham Greene. Stone had an almost prophetic grasp of the spirit of his age, which he captured with crystalline clarity in each of his novels. Of course, he was also a sharp and brilliant observer of American life, and his nonfiction writing is revelatory. The Eye You See With--the first and only collection of Robert Stone''s nonfiction--was carefully selected by award-winning novelist and Stone biographer Madison Smartt Bell. Divided into three sections, the collection includes the best of Stone''s war reporting, his writing on social change, and his reflections on the art of fiction. This is an extraordinary volume that offers up a clear-eyed look at the 20th century and secures Robert Stone''s place as one of the most original figures in all of American letters.

Chasing the Moon

release date: Jun 04, 2019
Chasing the Moon
JFK issued the historic moon landing challenge. These are the stories of the visionaries who helped America complete his vision with the first lunar landing fifty years ago. A Companion Book to the AMERICAN EXPERIENCE® Film on PBS® Going in depth to explore their stories beyond the PBS series, writer/producer Robert Stone—called “one of our most important documentary filmmakers” by Entertainment Weekly—brings these important figures to brilliant life. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy proposed the nation spend twenty billion dollars to land a man on the Moon before the end of the decade. Based on eyewitness accounts and newly discovered archival material, Chasing the Moon reveals for the first time the unknown stories of the fascinating individuals whose imaginative work across several decades culminated in America’s momentous achievement. More than a story of engineers and astronauts, the moon landing—now celebrating its fiftieth anniversary—grew out of the dreams of science fiction writers, filmmakers, military geniuses, and rule-breaking scientists. They include • Science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, whose writing inspired some of the key players in the Moon race. A scientific paper he wrote in his twenties led to the U.S. beating Russia in one area of space: communications satellites. • Wernher von Braun, the former Nazi military genius who oversaw Hitler''s rocket weapons program. After working on ballistic missiles for the U.S. Army, he was recruited by NASA to manage the creation of the Saturn V moon rocket. • Astronaut Frank Borman, commander of the first mission to circumnavigate the Moon, whose powerful testimony before Congress in 1967 decisively saved the U.S. lunar program from being cancelled. • Poppy Northcutt, a young mathematician who was the first woman to work in Mission Control. Her media exposure as a unique presence in this all-male world allowed her the freedom to stand up for equal rights for women and minorities. • Edward Dwight, an African American astronaut candidate, recruited at the urging of the Kennedy White House to further the administration’s civil rights agenda—but not everyone welcomed his inclusion. Setting these key players in the political, social, and cultural climate of the time, and including captivating photographs throughout, Chasing the Moon focuses on the science and the history, but most important, the extraordinary individuals behind what was undoubtedly the greatest human achievement of the twentieth century.

Chasing Black Gold

release date: Jun 01, 2015
Chasing Black Gold
For two decades Robert Stone made his living on the high seas. A modern-day pirate, he was a pioneer saturation oil field diver, involved in fishing, treasure-hunting and, more than anything else, smuggling, which brought him more money than he knew how to spend. Stone spent the last ten of his smuggling years in Africa, where he traded in illicit fuel. The murky waters of the Niger delta were his place of business as he operated in the most corrupt regime in the world, a place ruled by money and guns. Protected by the military, he bought diesel directly from refineries and sold his black cargo to legitimate and illegitimate businesses all over the world, making millions of dollars in the process until his smuggling empire came crashing down thanks to a friend’s betrayal and the US law enforcement. Chasing Black Gold is the incredible true story of Stone’s African fuel smuggling adventure. It is a tale straight out of Hollywood, one which throws the reader into a world where suitcases full of millions in cash are flown around the globe on private jets, where the corrupt practices of Third World governments and military regimes must be mastered, a world of numbered bank accounts and countries of convenience where living under false IDs and money laundering are all in a day’s work.

The Trajectory of Destiny

release date: Nov 06, 2014
The Trajectory of Destiny
Robert J Stone pulls no punches. Humanity is currently on a one-way ride to oblivion, he says, and this is how it happened. One thing led to another. This is Big History. It begins at the beginning and goes until now - from the big bang until just yesterday. In just under 250 pages, it is a rapid ride through captivating terrain. More precisely, it is an effort to construct a coherent and comprehensive narrative account of the unfolding of existence in which each of us can find our origins, our identities, our dignities and tragedies and perhaps something of our commonalities. Stone is attempting to furnish the first draught of a plausible and universally acceptable narrative explanation for how humanity''s current state of affairs might have come about. He warns us in the introduction that all historical narrative is fiction parading as truth, and then he plows ahead, seeking to transcend the bias of nation, culture, ideology and faith by calling on Darwin and Einstein to frame his narrative in the context of scientific rationalism. While the book opens somewhat like A Little History of the World for grownups, it quickly addresses a number of key themes which it follows to the end. These include gender relations, social structures, economics, science, technology, culture, art, philosophy, ideology, environment and conflict. Stone''s description of the human predicament is far from optimistic. The only chance to avoid extinction, he says, is to become a single, collectively rational, cohesive, inclusive, just and sustainable global humanity. And while that is the only realistic option left, if we can manage it, everything else just might fall into place.

Austin Christian Leadership Institute Management 101

release date: May 30, 2014
Austin Christian Leadership Institute Management 101
Austin Christian Leadership Institute Management 101 is a twelve lesson discipleship development tool for developing pastors, ministers and Christian leaders who are seeking to grow their leadership quotient.Management 101 is also a "tool box" where each lesson is arranged in three to four "mini-lessons" so the student can teach them to his or her followers, disciples, students or congregation.Simply put, managing yourself and your ministry is three-fold. First, we each must set the direction of our life and ministry.Second, we must seek to follow that direction.Third, we must make course adjustments according to the leading of the Holy Spirit and the circumstances of life.Christian leaders rarely have sufficient funds for professional development before, during or after college. Even if finances are available, the biggest issue is that most leaders seldom seek help, and when they do, they rarely use the help to its fullest advantage because the help is:1) Not customized to the nature and needs of their life and ministry.2) Not fully accepted because of the changes the help would bring to the minister''s life and ministry.3) Not valued as much as one''s personal and theological views. How can we change this? We first must embrace the idea that each of us needs help. We need to first learn how to lead and manage our lives effectively BEFORE we try to lead and manage the lives of others. For more information concerning Austin Christian Leadership Institute please contact the author of Management 101, Robert Stone, at [email protected].

Austin Christian Leadership Institute Leadership 101

release date: May 30, 2014
Austin Christian Leadership Institute Leadership 101
Austin Christian Leadership Institute Leadership 101 is a twelve lesson discipleship development tool for developing young pastors and ministers who are seeking to grow their leadership quotient.Leadership 101 is also a "tool box" where each lesson is arranged in three to four "mini-lessons" so the student can teach them to his or her followers, disciples, students or congregation.Spiritual leadership seeks to motivate people from the inside, by an appeal to the heart, not by external pressure or coercion. Sadly, most of today''s leaders have traded away the notion of leadership by character to leadership by celebrity.Effective leaders are not consumed with their own success, but with the success of others. They work hard to make everyone around them more effective by focusing their passion on helping those they lead to envision, embrace and enjoy the opportunities set before them.Bernard Montgomery said, “Leadership is the capacity and will to rally men and women to a common purpose, and the character which inspires confidence.”This type of leader demonstrates to everyone around him that the interests of others are what most occupy his heart. The role of leadership in today''s Church is not a mere human arrangement; for each of its leaders are under divine appointment. From Moses to the Apostle Paul the Lord first chooses, commissions and then compels His leaders.Paul wrote to Colossians, “And say to Archippus, "Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.” (Colossians 4:17)The word “fulfill” is the present active subjunctive of plêroô, which means, "that you keep on filling it full." In other words, leadership is a life-time job.For more information concerning Austin Christian Leadership Institute please contact the author of Leadership 101, Robert Stone at [email protected].
