Leonardo

release date: Sep 15, 2009
Leonardo
The eighth action-packed installment in a series about a young team of time travelers, this narrative continues to utilize the highly visual "movie-book" format that has proven to engage reluctant readers. Recognizing the image of a man they''ve seen in previous time-jumps, the Time Soldiers become keenly interested in a Leonardo da Vinci sketch they see hanging in a local museum. Attached to the portrait is a note alluding to the glowing green stones and a danger that surrounds them, but the key information is lost due to a tear in the note. Traversing back to the Renaissance era to find da Vinci, the adventurers work to discover the truth about these dark dangers and the mysterious traveling man before it is too late. Offering an increased word count from previous selections in the series, this tale utilizes a stealth literacy approach to improving the reading abilities of disinclined students.

Partners

release date: May 15, 2006
Partners
In seventh grade a close friend of mine, Chanel Brossett, told me she wanted to be a cop. She was joking, but she gave me the idea to write Partners. I got to thinking about what the world would be like if some of my friends were cops and some were crooks. Partners starts off as a bank robbery, which leads to so much more. Partners will take you on the adventure of a group of law enforcers out to avenge the murder of one of their own. They will encounter numerous obstacles and several set backs. It''s a story of determination, revenge and other drama that comes in between. Surprisingly, the ending of this book is only the beginning. Leo Mondaca is not a man to be messed with, but unfortunately the good guys don''t know this. Their quest to take Leo down will prove to be very hard and could eventually back fire on them. Leo is the biggest drug dealer and smuggler in Texas and the most powerful man in Dallas and he''s about to attempt to change Dallas'' history forever. Daniel Ramos and his crew are heading to Dallas and they are about to join forces with Leo to create a deadly force. Robert is a Texas Ranger. He and a small group of his allies will have to do everything in their power to take down their foes. They will be the only thing standing between Leo and Daniel and their dream of becoming the biggest drug dealers in the world. Drugs only play a minor role in Partners; the real story is a lot more complicated. Partners is full of mystery, denial, betrayal, speed and a whole lot of action, and yet this is merely the beginning. Eventually the whole story will be told, this is the story of Partners. *Dedicated to Mrs. Jackson, my seventh grade English teacher

Developing Essential Understanding of Statistics for Teaching Mathematics in Grades 9-12

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Developing Essential Understanding of Statistics for Teaching Mathematics in Grades 9-12
How does a statistical model differ from a mathematical model? What are the differences among the sample distribution, the sampling distribution, and the population distribution? In an experiment, what effect does the sampling method have on the results? What are the implications of the use of processes of random selection and random assignment? Can a small sample yield accurate estimates of population parameters? This book examines five big ideas and twenty-four related essential understandings for teaching statistics in grades 9–12. The authors distinguish mathematical and statistical models, explore distributions as descriptions of variability in data, focus on the fundamentals of testing hypotheses to draw conclusions from data, highlight the importance of the data collection method, and recognise the need to examine bias, precision, and sampling method in evaluating statistical estimators. Recognising that analysing data is an important part of understanding the world, the authors discuss the growth of students’ ideas about statistics and examine challenges to teaching, learning, and assessment. They intersperse their discussion with questions for teachers’ reflection.

The Biltmore

release date: Jan 22, 2023
The Biltmore
The Biltmore is an alternative oral history about the futile attempts to develop a vacant, beachfront lot in Hermosa Beach, California over twenty years. In 1969, The Biltmore, a derelict hotel and the tallest building in Hermosa Beach was torn down. For some, the loss of such an iconic building marked the point at which Hermosa Beach was no longer a paradise. Many of us remember our childhoods fondly, perhaps the area we grew up in, including its buildings and businesses, more than our families. Many of the events in the book happened but the book is a work of fiction. Hermosa Beach went from being a town at the beach to a town of surfers living the dreams of all who loved Gidget, Beach Party movies, and surf music. That didn''t last long as later in the 1960s it became a hippy paradise where it seemed that residents were required to own a Volkswagon Beetle. That didn''t last long either and the town became a party town for single software and aerospace engineers. A small contingent of punks tried to stage a rebellion but that was short-lived as housing prices soared and modest houses were torn down and replaced with houses that strained the limits of the small lots.

The Development and Validation of a Scale Measuring the Defense Mechanism of Splitting

release date: Jan 01, 1993
The Development and Validation of a Scale Measuring the Defense Mechanism of Splitting
A new personality scale measuring the extent to which an individual utilizes the defense mechanism of splitting was developed and validated. Named the Splitting Index (SI), this measure is based upon the writings of Kemberg (e.g., 1975) on self and object representations and the mechanism of splitting. The SI was developed over the course of six pilot studies and then validated during two additional studies, utilizing a total of 2401 subjects drawn from introductory psychology courses at the University of Texas at Austin. Factor analyses revealed a 24-item scale with three 8-item subscales, measuring the splitting of self, family, and others'' images. The SI and its sub scales were demonstrated to be internally consistent and stable over a four-week period. Convergent validity results featured significant correlations with measures of the borderline and narcissistic personality disorders, self-image stability, self-esteem, depression, and negative affectivity. Discriminant validity was demonstrated by near-zero correlations with two measures of cognitive complexity. Contrary to predictions, the SI was significantly correlated with measures of dogmatism and social desirability. Additional research was suggested to further validate the SI, and research and clinical applications of the measure were presented. Several theoretical considerations were also addressed, including the role of splitting processes in everyday life.
