SEVERAL YEARS AGO, my brother Dan recommended I read Richard E. Simmons'' book, Reflections on the Existence of God. I was intrigued by the book''s brief essays and timely reflections on the climate of our culture. I have been educating students for 44 years and currently teach an apologetics class to tenth graders at The Covenant School in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Reason for God, by Tim Keller, had been my primary text. With the encouragement of several students, who also read Reflections on the Existence of God, I decided it was time to try something new. I contacted Mr. Simmons to see if he had written a study guide to accompany his book. His response was brief and a bit of a challenge - no I haven''t, maybe you would like to write one. He also expressed a strong desire to get this book into the hands of teens and college age students! During this school year, my tenth-grade classes, the class of 2024, spent time reading and discussing Reflections on the Existence of God. One of their ongoing assignments was to create a list of questions from each section. We were after "essential questions", ones that cause you to think a bit more deeply and ones that cannot be answered with a simple yes or no. We discussed the text and debated which of the submitted questions were the best. This study guide can be used in a variety of settings-for group and individual study, family worship times, college ministry studies, or as a course curriculum for private and home education. It is also a valuable tool to equip you to engage with skeptics, friends or family struggling with doubt, using thought-provoking questions and conversation. In my classes, I assign a chapter or a smaller section to read for homework. They are to highlight or take notes. I ask for feedback from their reading and then use my questions to engage in a discussion which hopefully leads them into a higher level of thinking and application.

Experiences arising from recent geo-political tensions, natural disasters such as the 2011 Japanese Tōhoku Earthquake, the Covid-19 Pandemic and the 2022 Russo - Ukrainian war have all illustrated the fragility of the global supply chains to exogenous shocks. Shocks always occur, but the combination of global political tension and climate change events suggest that alternative supply chain designs maybe more appropriate for stress (sometime called “crisis”) situations than building ever increasing amounts of safety stock. Some firms have already started to “reshore” remote operations and 3D printing will offer other reconfiguration possibilities. This paper looks at a third “market friendly” alternative that builds upon existing cluster innovation links to grow supply chain resilience in Tier 2 and Tier 3 suppliers within existing clusters by expanding the scope of their cluster membership to “pool” their resources to ensure continuity of supply. The paper draws on a wide variety of disciplines to propose a cluster resilience framework that can be activated in times of stress. The resilience framework draws upon member firm expertise to drive it and is thereby market focused whilst defending the competitive position of the cluster as a whole. In non-stress times, these firms both compete for customers and collaborate on innovation so such a framework needs to be enabled and administered by a neutral player, and for this we propose a local “entrepreneurial university” to anchor the institutional machinery to build the “thick trust” that enables partnership to drive both supply chain resilience and enhanced innovation.

All countries, especially facing a posit COVID-19 disrupted world, are keen to promote economic development that will be resilient to future external shocks. Over the years many different forms of “development structure” have been attempted including Export Processing Zones, Special Economic Zones, Free Trade Zones, High Technology Zones, clusters and so and so forth. Whilst some of these have been very successful in themselves, others have not; and there is evidence that even if the zone is successful itself, there is no inevitable consequence that business in the nearby locality will benefit.This contribution establishes a “Post Pandemic” localised economic development framework based upon “Local Economic Zones”, where anchors drive local activity whilst being themselves strengthened to be competitive on a regional, pan regional and global level.The methodology focuses on developing and connecting what already exists, gap filling by (i) providing access to technology, finance and skills development through a gateway or anchor institution (possibly an “entrepreneurial university” that is local in character, but global in outlook and (ii) access to affordable working capital via a specific community currency and gateways to banks and capital markets through building accurate and accessible business histories and associated credit information.
