Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One's Reason and of Seeking Truth in the Sciences
René Descartes wrote a philosophical and autobiographical work titled Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One''s Reason and of Seeking Truth in the Sciences, which was published in 1637. The most well-known use of it is as the inspiration for the idiom "Je pense, donc Je Suis," which appears in Part IV of the work. Meditations on First Philosophy (1641) contains a similar argument but without this same language, and Principles of Philosophy contains a Latin translation of the identical claim, Cogito, ergo sum (1644). One of the most influential books in the history of contemporary philosophy, Discourse on the Method is crucial to the advancement of the natural sciences. Descartes addresses the issue of skepticism in this work, which was previously researched by other philosophers. Descartes adapted the methods of some of his predecessors and contemporaries while addressing a fact that he believed to be indisputable; in order to observe the world honestly and without any bias, he started out on his line of reasoning by doubting everything. The book''s initial printing took place in Leiden, Netherlands. Dioptrique, Météores, and Géométrie were the three works that the book was meant to provide as an introduction.

Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting the Reason And Seeking Truth in the Sciences
Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One''s Reason and of Seeking Truth in the Sciences (French: Discours de la Méthode Pour bien conduire sa raison, et chercher la vérité dans les sciences) is a philosophical and autobiographical treatise by René Descartes. Discourse on the Method is one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy, and important to the development of natural sciences. In this work, Descartes tackles the problem of skepticism, which had previously been studied by other philosophers. While addressing some of his predecessors and contemporaries, Descartes modified their approach to account for a truth he found to be incontrovertible; he started his line of reasoning by doubting everything, so as to assess the world from a fresh perspective, clear of any preconceived notions. Together with Meditations on First Philosophy, Principles of Philosophy and Rules for the Direction of the Mind, it forms the base of the epistemology known as Cartesianism.

The Passions of The Soul (Gairah Jiwa)
DISCOURSE on the METHOD (Annotated)
Good sense is, of all things among men, the most equally distributed; for every one thinks himself so abundantly provided with it, that those even who are the most difficult to satisfy in everything else, do not usually desire a larger measure of this quality than they already possess. And in this it is not likely that all are mistaken the conviction is rather to be held as testifying that the power of judging aright and of distinguishing truth from error, which is properly what is called good sense or reason, is by nature equal in all men; and that the diversity of our opinions, consequently, does not arise from some being endowed with a larger share of reason than others, but solely from this, that we conduct our thoughts along different ways, and do not fix our attention on the same objects. For to be possessed of a vigorous mind is not enough; the prime requisite is rightly to apply it.

Selections from the Principles of Philosophy

Selections from the Principles of Philosophy
René Descartes (31 March 1596 - 11 February 1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist. A native of the Kingdom of France, he spent about 20 years (1629-1649) of his life in the Dutch Republic after serving for a while in the Dutch States Army of Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange and the Stadtholder of the United Provinces. One of the most notable intellectual figures of the Dutch Golden Age, [19] Descartes is also widely regarded as one of the founders of modern philosophy. Many elements of Descartes'' philosophy have precedents in late Aristotelianism, the revived Stoicism of the 16th century, or in earlier philosophers like Augustine. In his natural philosophy, he differed from the schools on two major points: first, he rejected the splitting of corporeal substance into matter and form; second, he rejected any appeal to final ends, divine or natural, in explaining natural phenomena.[20] In his theology, he insists on the absolute freedom of God''s act of creation. Refusing to accept the authority of previous philosophers, Descartes frequently set his views apart from the philosophers who preceded him. In the opening section of the Passions of the Soul, an early modern treatise on emotions, Descartes goes so far as to assert that he will write on this topic "as if no one had written on these matters before". His best known philosophical statement is "I think, therefore I am" (French: Je pense, donc je suis; Latin: cogito, ergo sum), found in Discourse on the Method (1637; written in French and Latin) and Principles of Philosophy (1644; written in Latin) Descartes laid the foundation for 17th-century continental rationalism, later advocated by Spinoza and Leibniz, and was later opposed by the empiricist school of thought consisting of Hobbes, Locke, Berkeley, and Hume. Leibniz, Spinoza, and Descartes were all well-versed in mathematics as well as philosophy, and Descartes and Leibniz contributed greatly to science as well. Descartes'' Meditations on First Philosophy (1641) continues to be a standard text at most university philosophy departments. Descartes'' influence in mathematics is equally apparent; the Cartesian coordinate system was named after him. He is credited as the father of analytical geometry, the bridge between algebra and geometry--used in the discovery of infinitesimal calculus and analysis. Descartes was also one of the key figures in the Scientific Revolution.

Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One''s Reason and of Seeking Truth in the Sciences (French: Discours de la Méthode Pour bien conduire sa raison, et chercher la vérité dans les sciences) is a philosophical and autobiographical treatise published by René Descartes in 1637. It is best known as the source of the famous quotation "Je pense, donc je suis" (English: "I think, therefore I am", or "I am thinking, therefore I exist"), which occurs in Part IV of the work. A similar argument, without this precise wording, is found in Meditations on First Philosophy (1641), and a Latin version of the same statement Cogito, ergo sum is found in Principles of Philosophy (1644). Discourse on the Method is one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy, and important to the development of natural sciences.[2] In this work, Descartes tackles the problem of skepticism, which had previously been studied by other philosophers. The book was originally published in Leiden, in the Netherlands. Later, it was translated into Latin and published in 1656 in Amsterdam. The book was intended as an introduction to three works: Dioptrique, Météores and Géométrie. La Géométrie contains Descartes''s initial concepts that later developed into the Cartesian coordinate system. The text was written and published in French rather than Latin, the latter being the language in which most philosophical and scientific texts were written and published at that time. Most of Descartes'' other works were written in Latin.

The Principles of Philosophy

release date: Jan 09, 2019
The Principles of Philosophy
Principles of Philosophy is a book by Rene Descartes. It is basically a synthesis of the Discourse on Method and Meditations on First Philosophy. It set forth the principles of nature—the Laws of Physics--as Descartes viewed them. Most notably, it set forth the principle that in the absence of external forces, an object''s motion will be uniform and in a straight line. Newton borrowed this principle from Descartes and included it in his own Principia; to this day, it is still generally referred to as Newton''s First Law of Motion. The book was primarily intended to replace the Aristotelian curriculum then used in French and British Universities. Descartes''s use of the word "philosophy" in the title refers to "natural philosophy", which is what science was called at that time.
