Burnout in Baccalaureate Degree Nursing Students in a University in the Northwest United States
Stress and burnout in nursing students contributes to attrition and the nursing shortage as a whole. Understanding burnout in nursing students may help reduce the number of potential nurses lost to attrition. The following study measures the presence of burnout in baccalaureate nursing students, determines if burnout scores are different based on semester in nursing school, and sought to determine if any demographic characteristics were associated with higher levels of burnout. Questionnaires utilizing the Maslach Burnout Inventory were given to 158 nursing students at a university in northwest United States. The students showed high emotional exhaustion, moderate personal accomplishment, and low depersonalization scores. Emotional exhaustion did significantly increase in later semesters of nursing school.
