In den Meditationes de prima philosophia (1641) erweist Descartes die Tauglichkeit der von ihm gefundenen erkenntnistheoretischen Methode für die Grundlegung gewisser Erkenntnis. Husserl über das Werk, das die Philosophie der Neuzeit begründete: "Die Cartesianischen Meditationes wollen nicht zufällige subjektive Besinnungen Descartes'' sein oder gar eine literarische Kunstform für die Übermittlung der Gedanken des Autors. Vielmehr geben sie sich offenbar als die in der Art und Ordnung ihrer Motivation notwendigen Besinnungen, die das radikal philosophierende Subjekt als solches notwendig durchmachen muß [...] Darin also liegt die Ewigkeitsbedeutung der Cartesianischen Meditationes. Sie zeichnen [...] den notwendigen Stil des philosophischen Anfangens." Die vorliegende deutsche Übersetzung enthält neben dem Haupttext sämtliche Einwände von Caterus, Mersenne, Hobbes u.a. sowie Descartes'' Erwiderungen nach der Maßgabe des Textbestandes der lateinischen Erstausgabe von 1641 und der erweiterten zweiten Auflage von 1642. Grundlage für die Übersetzung bildet der lateinische Text in der Standardausgabe von Adam und Tannery, Bd. VII. Vergleichend hinzugezogen wurde die von Descartes selbst durchgesehene französische Übertragung der "Meditations Metaphysiques" von C. Lerselie R. (Paris 1647).

Esai-esai ini dihadirkan karena perlu dan penting, bahwa wacana klasik sudah sepantasnya di-masyarakat-kan, agar polemik tentang kepengarangan tidak hanya menjadi wacara akademik yang esoterik. Yang dibedah dalam buku ini adalah wilayah antara dua ekstrem dengan berbagai nuansanya, yaitu antara pengarang sebagai jenius dan sosok agung di satu pihak, dan pengarang yang harus mundur dari pentas, digantikan oleh kritikus, bahkan pembaca. Siapkah kita terima pergantian peran ini? Em outubro de 1637 é anonimamente publicada, com o título de "Discurso do método para bem conduzir a própria razão e procurar as verdades na ciência, mais A dióptrica, Os meteoros e A geometria que são ensaios desse método", a primeira obra de Descartes, unanimemente considerada como um marco fundamental para o processo de constituição da ciência moderna. Discurso & ensaios anuncia explicitamente o advento de uma filosofia prática que promove a união entre a ciência e a técnica, dando o primeiro passo para o nascimento da tecnologia, entendida como racionalização científica (metódica) da técnica, para tornar efetivo o ato técnico de controle (domínio) da natureza, cuja possibilidade se assenta na concepção de que a natureza é simples matéria em movimento, desprovida de qualquer finalidade intrínseca. Edição comentada traz a tradução para o português do "Discours de la méthode" e dos três ensaios (“La dioptrique”, “Les météores”, “La géométrie”) que originalmente o acompanhavam.

Este livro apresenta aos leitores de língua portuguesa ''O mundo ou Tratado da luz e O homem'', obras escritas por Descartes, de 1629 a 1633, e publicadas postumamente. Nesta edição bilíngue, ao apresentá-las em um mesmo volume, procurou-se respeitar a unidade entre eles e resgatar a intenção original do autor quando os pensou como uma única obra. N''O mundo, Descartes apresenta as doutrinas de sua ''física'' mecanicista (estrutura da matéria, leis do movimento, explicação do sistema planetário, natureza e propriedades da luz). Com isso, oferece uma visão de seu ''mundo'', sem deixar de se preocupar com sua fundamentação. N''O homem, Descartes expõe a sua concepção de fisiologia, na qual a mecânica é adotada como modelo explicativo. Ao apresentar o corpo humano pelo recurso comparativo à máquina artificial, esse texto pode ser interpretado como um estudo propedêutico à construção da medicina.
